Ever wonder why Cuse doesn't have more than 1 title in forever? Zone sucks.

This can't be overstated enough.

Yes, a zone is a good tool for a few possessions, but playing it full time means your team is likely nonathletic and not very talented. Or it's Syracuse.

This team predominantly plays man 2 man. What better way to get some actual game practice time in on their preferred defense than when up 15?

Why go zone and work on something irrelevant that they'll hardly ever use, when they could work on what desperately needs to be worked on, their man defense.

It's a waste of time working on a just in case defense when there are much more important things that need to be addressed.
Yeah they have only been practicing since Sept. played 30 games plus 2 exhib. games, and had oh 150 practices to learn the big men to move their feet and not be constantly in foul trouble. Not to mention the very good possibility of playing 3 games in 3 days at the SEC tournament...... Nah !

if you want the entire post to be read, then maybe you shouldn't start it with condescending straw man bs

clearly, if "most" people thought florida would have made every perimeter jumpshot had uk played zone, then florida's offensive rebounding would be a total non-issue to them
Wow ! Thanks Coach K, Wooden Rupp for those very insightful comments from your wealth of Basketball knowledge. I will be hanging on every word, just trying to absorb more hoop knowledge !

One defensive series.

But maybe Cal liked that guy getting 23 dunks on us
That guy is heavier than Lebron. How is a zone supposed to slow him if Alex doesn't end up on him? Doesn't matter what defense we play - if that guy is fired up for a certain game, he's gonna get his unless you are '15 Kentucky with oak trees off the bench. So what do you do? Let him try to beat you all by himself. That's what we did, and he dunked in everybody's face while his teammates did nothing.

And your point? Evidently they need more practice at it because they're not very good at it? Isn't that the whole point?

Are they only allowed to practice it so many minutes, hours, days. Should they just give up and stop trying to get better? Bottom line is, there are much, much more important things this team needs to work on defensively than a zone defense that they'll hardly ever use.

I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more zone just to help protect our bigs from foul trouble. Our bigs are in foul trouble every game.

Umm... you just basically proved @DwayneMeighan point. The bigs have been through all that you listed, yet they still struggle with it.

So how is it that more time spent working on it is a bad thing? The more time spent working on it the better, and especially if some of that time is during game on the road, with a ruckus crowd and whistle happy refs.

They need to work on several aspects of the game.

Knowing how to play against a zone defense and being able to hit enough shots from the outside is another thing. This Florida team can't hit enough shots against a zone to win.
They did not need to until the end as their inside game was not slowed down.

It's easier to run an offense against a zone then it is to play zone defense.

Probably not, FT shooting, stop fouling, keep turnovers down, going inside on offense.
Umm... that's the whole point. You're basically agreeing with what I said. There are some things that need to be worked on more than others. Zone is in the others category, meaning it's not as important.

Doesn't the NBA have Zone defense? If they do, they don't use it. Basically, Im saying that Cal probably doesn't use it because it doesn't help prepare his players for the next step. And that's what these kids come here to do. Make the next level.

Who gives a crap about these players and the next level. I am interested in what these players provide to UK. UK isn't an NBA farm system and some fans need to realize that. Based on what most of these players have demonstrated to this point, their names and the NBA shouldn't be used in the same sentence this year if the sentence doesn't say these players aren't even close to NBA ready. It is one of the least NBA prepared collection of players that UK has had in a long time.
