why we don't zone a team that can't throw it in the ocean, but we let them drive at will for dunks or fouls. SMH at Cal.

they're up 15

they have trouble defensive rebounding in man, when there are clear individual block out responsibilities

and they played zone briefly in the first half

I love Cal, and I am not a fan of zone defenses. I think too many see them as an easy solution to all our struggles.

I do think your question is a fair one though.

It is a very good question. It is one of the reasons this team hasn't performed better this season. There is no reason to not use a zone against this team. Cal simply hasn't put his team in the best situations at various times during the season to win.

Would just like to see a zone when opponent is taking it out bounds under their own basket. 4 easy looks tonight--1 basket, 2 missed bunnies and a foul.

Interesting thread, watched the 2011 UK-Florida game on ESPN classic. UK played a lot of zone in the 2nd half, with T Jones, Jorts, Vargas, Miller etc.

Everybody knows how to play against a zone so man to man gives you a better chance.

Knowing how to play against a zone defense and being able to hit enough shots from the outside is another thing. This Florida team can't hit enough shots against a zone to win.

UK could play the game by only taking off hand shots. Even if they could win doing it, it wouldn't be the smartest approach because as a team you should play to your strengths. Based on foul trouble and giving up 9 dunks to one player, man-to-man defense wasn't playing to the team's strength.

I guess I could see your point with foul trouble, but in the first half alot of our fouls were from them getting offensive rebounds which a zone wouldn't help with and if one player is the only one hurting me In man to man defense I would prob stick with it

Ever wonder why Cuse doesn't have more than 1 title in forever? Zone sucks.

Complaining about losing games because of poor officiating sucks. Not using every tool available to you to keep key players out of foul trouble sucks too...

seeing the same "fans" with room temperature basketball IQs incessantly leveling the same simpleton criticisms at the coach sucks

Ever heard of a matchup zone, I dont think this team is smart enough to play it, but it would help getting beat off the dribble all night and having a guy throw down 11 dunks.

Odd how most think when you play zone, the opposing team is automatically going to hit every 3 point shot they take. Percentages show that is certainly not the case. Granted some teams ie. Villanova they can make a lot of 3's, but by and large most teams don't shoot like Villanova does.
Most teams have a couple real good outside shooters, but you must identify them in the zone defense. Right now we have 2 really good outside shooters, 3 when Willis gets back. We struggle with teams getting to the rim at times in our man to man, without a big time shot blocker like we have had in the past. I also prefer man to man, but a zone does have it's place.

Doesn't the NBA have Zone defense? If they do, they don't use it. Basically, Im saying that Cal probably doesn't use it because it doesn't help prepare his players for the next step. And that's what these kids come here to do. Make the next level.

you do realize which team won the game, right?

cal has each team for one year, pretty much. he's not going to spend half his practice time teaching an esoteric matchup zone, just in case he needs it

when temple played the matchup, they practiced it all the time

he played the three-quarter court trap against vandy to try to get them out of rhythm, and he's always had the cookie-cutter 2-3

This team predominantly plays man 2 man. What better way to get some actual game practice time in on their preferred defense than when up 15?

Why go zone and work on something irrelevant that they'll hardly ever use, when they could work on what desperately needs to be worked on, their man defense.

It's a waste of time working on a just in case defense when there are much more important things that need to be addressed.

Odd you would post this when 1 guy had ELEVEN dunks tonight. And read the entire post !

if you want the entire post to be read, then maybe you shouldn't start it with condescending straw man bs

clearly, if "most" people thought florida would have made every perimeter jumpshot had uk played zone, then florida's offensive rebounding would be a total non-issue to them
