Saint Louis doesn’t look very athletic but so well coached team. Makes me wonder what he could do with a lot of talent
He’s a good one. I’d love to have a chance to hire him. If Pope doesn’t work out next year we need to pounce. May not even have a chance after this especially if they win this one. He is gonna get a p5 offer real soon in the big 4 conferences.Saint Louis doesn’t look very athletic but so well coached team. Makes me wonder what he could do with a lot of talent
He just signed an extension a week ago. He won’t go anywhere this cycle. He’s a good one. I’d love to have a chance to hire him. If Pope doesn’t work out next year we need to pounce. I mean his roster isn’t even comparable and Michigan may be the best team in the NCAA. Not exactly breaking news. It got out of hand late in the second half but they were hanging around a large portion of the game. He's exactly the type of coach the football schools in the SEC always hired in the past, they'd sit back & wait for a small school to make a run in the tournament, then hire him using some of the football/tv money. It's happened so many times in the past. Bruce Pearl at Tennessee, Stan Heath at Arkansas, Will Wade at LSU, even recently with Nate Oats at Alabama & Todd Golden at Florida. You would never see that at Kentucky back then, they wanted someone that had proven it somewhere else before hiring them here, AD's at those schools could get away with those hires because the fans could give 2 ***** less about basketball & it made it look like they're trying to compete in basketball. Obviously things have changed since then because we hired a fan favorite that wasn't really qualified for this job, now we have fans wanting basketball coaches from football schools & from St.Louis University lol. I get it on being frustrated with Pope, I really do, I've questioned about everything he's done this year, however, he's way more qualified to be the coach here than the one getting his *** handed to him by Michigan right now lol.
To be fair, that's the same amount as the current guy before he was hired here. You guys are something else. It’s the second tournament game he’s ever coached in
All true but some fans have gotten flat silly about coaches coming to Kentucky lol. I totally get the frustration with Pope.I mean his roster isn’t even comparable and Michigan may be the best team in the NCAA. Not exactly breaking news. It got out of hand late in the second half but they were hanging around a large portion of the game.
Of those names you mentioned, Wade and Pearl ended up having other issues, but only Stan Heath could remotely be considered unsuccessful on the court. Golden even won a championship. I don’t think those are good examples of desperate, low quality hires like you seem to be insinuating. Especially since guys who have “proven it somewhere else” as in Final Fours and championships aren’t really changing jobs these days. He's exactly the type of coach the football schools in the SEC always hired in the past, they'd sit back & wait for a small school to make a run in the tournament, then hire him using some of the football/tv money. Nah, it’s Golden or bust… But UNC is about to sneak in and say, “We’ll take that, thank you very much!”Saint Louis doesn’t look very athletic but so well coached team. Makes me wonder what he could do with a lot of talent
This is no longer as important. Coaches need an NIL budget to attract top talent. A SLU NIL is just not enough to get the top players. The hard part is getting the talent. We need a coach who can recruit.
I'm just saying that those football schools could get away with those types of hires, Kentucky couldn't, but now things have changed to the point of Kentucky fans clamoring for coaches at places like St.Louis lol. Do you really think Nate Oats coming from Buffalo & Todd Golden coming from San Francisco would've even been considered when they hired Billy Clyde? Or even Calipari? No, they wouldn't have been. Billy Clyde at least came from a power 5 school. Yes, Oats & Golden found success since coming to the SEC, like I said, times have changed.Of those names you mentioned, Wade and Pearl ended up having other issues, but only Stan Heath could remotely be considered unsuccessful on the court. Hmm maybe something like 22 million? I'm sure ANYBODY could get the top guys with that much money. This is no longer as important. Coaches need an NIL budget to attract top talent. A SLU NIL is just not enough to get the top players.
We just ran off the greatest recruiter in the history of the game.
Give Schertz the money to buy talent and he’s going to be very successful.
It’s funny how your examples of bad coaching nullify your argument. Pearl, Wilson, Oats and Golden have been great hires everywhere they’ve been. He's exactly the type of coach the football schools in the SEC always hired in the past, they'd sit back & wait for a small school to make a run in the tournament, then hire him using some of the football/tv money. I really do think he has a bright future, it would be a chance hire for sure, but one that could pay off big.All true but some fans have gotten flat silly about coaches coming to Kentucky lol. I totally get the frustration with Pope.
Maybe it’s not where the candidates come from but the hiring entity being able to recognize talent?I'm just saying that those football schools could get away with those types of hires, Kentucky couldn't, but now things have changed to the point of Kentucky fans clamoring for coaches at places like St.Louis lol. That's not my point, my point is that those football schools could take a chance on those coaches & Kentucky wouldn't, also how times have changed. We now have fans wanting a football schools basketball coach or a coach from St.Louis University. It’s funny how your examples of bad coaching nullify your argument. I think that’s a large part of the frustration. He should’ve never been given the opportunity. If you don’t think Schertz deserves a look (totally fair), then the same is true of Pope. If anything, there was just evidence that Pope didn’t deserve a look given his track record. It’s such a gamble on the guys with limited experience. All true but some fans have gotten flat silly about coaches coming to Kentucky lol. I totally get the frustration with Pope.
You're right, however, Pope played here & that's the main reason he got the job, same with Matt Doherty at NC. If Pope can break through with his recruiting I really think he can take off here, he runs good stuff when he has the players to run it correctly. Let's be real though, he was accustomed to recruiting mostly Mormon players before he got here.I think that’s a large part of the frustration. He should’ve never been given the opportunity. We know Mitch sucks at thatMaybe it’s not where the candidates come from but the hiring entity being able to recognize talent?
I get it but people just took the Jeff Goodman 22 million dollar thing as fact & ran with it. Matt Jones said it wasn't even close to that. I have no idea. I'd venture to say it was 10-12 million, either way, still too expensive but that's college basketball now with NIL.Hmm maybe something like 22 million? I'm sure ANYBODY could get the top guys with that much money.
The greatest recruiter - LEFT!This is no longer as important. Coaches need an NIL budget to attract top talent. A SLU NIL is just not enough to get the top players.

His career arch has a very similar look to that of Curt Cignetti. Except he’s farther along at a younger age. He wins.I mean his roster isn’t even comparable and Michigan may be the best team in the NCAA. Not exactly breaking news. It got out of hand late in the second half but they were hanging around a large portion of the game.
