JoMo's big mistake

The biggest mistake JoMo made was talking about SEC Championships, National Championships, and Heisman trophies.

If he gets off the plane talking about keeping the course and taking the next step, things may be a tad different. He got all the fans to buy into unreasonable expectations and now here we are.

JoMo isn't a bad football coach I don't think, the issue is, he's following the guy that was PERFECT for Miss St. Mullen like it or not, was an amazing hire and coach here. He won the games he was suppose to win, he pulled the occassional upset off, and he was always winning 7-8 games and going to bowl games. He figured out how to do that on a consistent basis and it wasn't good enough for the people around here.

If your not happy with JoMo, and I'm not, then realistically who are we going to hire? Chances are none of the big names will even bat an eye at coming here so youre back to rolling the dice and trying to find the next Mullen. The next lesser named coach or coordianator whose willing to come here and fight against the big boys year in and year out.

He didn’t have me buying into a national championship last year. It didn’t matter what he got off the plane saying. But I also didn’t expect an anemic offense and for us to lose 5 games. But what he said getting off the plane has no bearing on my opinion of him right now.

No its not.

His biggest mistake was letting Dan Mullen beat his *** while he only scored 6 points with the secs all time leading rushing qb.

It doesnt matter what he said off the plane. What matters is the results. And having the worst offense since croom this season and losing to mediocre teams like tennessee and kansas state to miss a bowl game is what is the matter with this team/

I still have no problem with a coach talking up championships as his goal. He did go a bit overboard by telling Fitzgerald, a Senior, he should make room on his mantle, because that suggested his first year was going to be a breakthrough year. But all of the great coaches want their players to adopt a "championship standard". He wanted the fans to at least expect winning records in conference.

If anyone heard all that talk from him and then thought he was going to win 10 or 11 games that first year, that's on you and not Moorhead. I thought he might win 9 games that first year, and then quickly adjusted down to 8 when I saw Fitzgerald trying to pass the ball against K-State. I still don't understand how everyone is angry with Moorhead about last season; disappointed, sure, but I don't get all the anger.

JoMo has made a lot of mistakes so far, but bragging about his ability to upgrade the team was not one of them.

You are incorrect. His biggest mistake was losing to Florida - surrounded by a few other big ones like losing to UK, Iowa, KSU, and Tenn. With three of those losses squandering away the talent of an elite defense. That has nothing to do with talking about championships.

I didn’t really expect to be winning championships right out of the gate. I liked his expectations though.

And why why do we have to re-hash Mullen aGAIN? Yes, he did great here. He was wonderful in getting us where we were. He was one of our best coaches EVAH! But...he gon. Get over it.

And just like Mullen was able to succeed here, some other great coach will see his past performance and think that he too can do the same if not better. THAT is the kind of coach we need here. So to all who think if we can JoMo will scare off coaches, it won’t. It’ll only weed out those who won’t be a good fit. And that’s a good thing. Maybe Joe Brady will take the job.

Wrong. His biggest mistake was trying to throw the ball over and over against Kentucky and Florida.

Next mistake was Tutorgate.

Next mistake was bringing in stop-gap transfers at the wrong positions and not bringing in JUCOs at defensive tackle (I have nothing against Stevens, but it's obvious quarterback wasn't the problem with the offense).

Here we are. Correct it against Ole Miss and you get another year. Losing to Ole Miss at home would be 4 strikes and that's too many.

It scared off plenty of coaches people thought would come here. Hence why Moorhead ended up getting the job.

You are correct though, people will continue to take the job. Just not big names. Someone will jump at the chance for the money and the chance of if they do well they can hit it big and move on to bigger things, but its going to be trial and error until another good one if found.

JoMo isn't the guy. Perhaps the next hire will be diamond in the rough that we are looking for.

You think the thing making people upset is the fact that Joe made people think we were going to be winning National and SEC championships? You don't think it's the fact that we only play hard 1 of every 3 games and never on the road? Or we look completely incompetent on offense and special teams every single week? Or when we do play hard we get 13 penalties? Or the fact that we are going backwards as a program from the day Joe stepped off the plane at GTR?

Finish 7-5 or even 6-6 and look prepared, competent and aggressive and I agree we need to stay the course a bit longer, but the current trajectory is a sloppy 4-8 or 5-7 marked by inconsistent effort and a continued downward spiral. Either way, the championship/trophy talk has dick to do with it.

doesn't matter what he says. it's about the product he puts on the field. the product isn't good. the problem with Moorhead is for a proclaimed offensive coach, his offense just straight up sucks. i don't think people would complain as much if the offense was putting up a bunch of yards and points. that's what people expected when Moorhead was hired. continuity of our offensive production and maybe even a raise in. what people didn't expect was for it to completely crash this bad.

There's more to coaching, and there's definitely more to running a program than schemes and calling plays.

JoMo's biggest mistake is we have a team that is disorganized, lost, unmotivated, and undisciplined in the middle of his second season as head coach.

Every coach promises championships. Joe’s problem is his offense sucks.

And doesn’t appear to show improvement either. There are plenty of reasons to criticize Joe but coach speak isn’t one of them.

If someone had their feelings hurt bc we didn’t win a championship last year, I have a century’s worth of results to share with them as to why their expectations were too high. If someone wants to cry about being let down, that’s on them believing that a school with our history is going to win a championship with a first year head coach and a different offensive philosophy.

Different coaches do it different ways. One thing that is apparent - Mullen ruled with an iron fist, and the current upperclassmen were definitely used to that sort of thing. Reminds me a lot of Bobby Petrino.

You don't occasionally pull off upsets when you have the worst record in the history of football vs ranked teams. Moorhead's biggest mistake is refusing to adapt his offense to his players and instead insisting his players adapt to his offense.

Nah, not a big deal. Mullen and Croom both talked about winning championships. I guess they can claim Gator Bowl and Liberty Bowl championships, or maybe the prestigious egg bowl championship...

It's what coaches do. No coach is going to say "We're just hoping to make a bowl, any bowl, this year!" But in truth that's the reality for most teams.

Saban doesn't. He never talks about outcomes. He focuses on the process. JoMo has changed his tune this year, he learned from his first year in that regard. He now talks of 12, 1 game seasons.

What big names were scared off and what scared them off? We haven’t fired anyone to scare off.

Also, what makes you think we’ll ever get a big-name coach? I’m optimistic, but not so blind to think we’ll get a big-name. We’ll have to settle for up-and-comers for a few more years.

Talking about national championships and ring sizes didn't do ****. If we have any fans that bought into that, then that’s their own damn fault. Alabama, Clemson and Georgia didn’t go anywhere when Joe got off the damn plane. Joe screwed up by losing games Dan Mullen would have one. Some of those games Could have been one buy a bunch of Mid-level coaches - hell Matt Luke would have won a couple of those games as our coach. So lets don’t over complicate things by getting all Philosophical and digging too hard on what went wrong. He’s just not a good coach.

Mullen said exactly the same thing. It's just new-coach talk. Would you like him to say the opposite?
