6 players from '18 defense were on nfl rosters in '19 plus Murphy, Autry and Gay missed 8 games = 127 more yards give up by def than previous year.

Offensive numbers in JM's first 2 years are almost identical to Mullen's 9th year. Mullen had basically the same defense in '17 and better receivers and went 8-4/ Saw earlier post that said JM didn't use Fitz correctly?? Numbers are practically identical to previous year, his 4th w Mullen??

Factually and Statistically JM is the same as Mullen as or now, OLine was bad this year and receivers avg at best. Hopefully Cross, Pendley, Johnson improve the OL and Heath and others are better. Need some dudes to stick around on D but looks to improve dramatically.

The whining, sky is falling crowd were the same ones crying about Mullen and they'll be bitching about the Sun Belt coach they want now in two years as well. JM's the coach today and will be next year, don't agree w everything he's done but its not as bad as the internet ADs portray. Hail State

I have always said that if Moorhead can make it out of 2019 and 2020 without a mutiny then he would be alright in 2021 and 2022.

Mullen also inherited a dumpster fire, not one of the stronger teams in school history. Jomo has never had to try to win with a 5'4 QB.

Dan Mullen was the best coach in program history. Expecting the next guy to be as good or better is unreasonable, irrational, and emotional. That being said, while Mullen won 59.3% of his games, Moorhead has won 58.3% so far. If you had offered me that little of a drop-off from the best coach in program history in November of 2017, I would have jumped on it.

It's not that he's winning or losing. It's how he's winning or losing.

The **** shows at UK, vs UF, and at LSU last year.... as well as the at UT game this year... are un-17ing-acceptable.

Give it a couple of more years before comparing. The 2018 team that Moorhead inherited would have been Mullen's best team ever on paper. And true to form it did produce 3 first round draft picks on defense.

and so many like you said the offense would be better this year with another year in the system and his guys running the show at qb. didn't look that way did it. this was one of his easiest schedules this year. with ole miss, arkansas, and kentucky all being down. Kansas State finished better, but they were in a rebuild this year and looked better under year one than we did in year two.

In college football it's all about winning and losing. When you fire a coach you have to do a second thing: Hire a coach that is going to win more games than than the guy you fired. And a new coach winning in the SEC West isn't the sure thing people on this board seem to think.

Mullen wouldn't have won at UK or LSU last year. Maybe at UT, but UT started playing better, played at Bama close, and has won 5 in a row. Maybe Mullen beats UF at home, but UF finished Top 10 and Mullen never beat a team that finished higher than #18. BTW, Moorhead beat Texas A&M last year which finished #16. UK, UF, and UT (and 2019 Kansas State compared to 2018 )8)8)8) were all better than expected.

Moorhead has faced tougher schedules than Mullen, especially Mullen's last two seasons.

It's also interesting to compare their records vs. State's perennial opponents.

In games we need to win more than lose (Kentucky, Arkansas, Ole Miss), Mullen was 18-9 (.667) and Moorhead is 5-1 (.833).

In games we are likely to lose more than win (Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M), Mullen was 8-25 (.242) and Moorhead is 2-6 (.250)

And once again for the record: I believe Mullen is the better coach. I point this out to refute the idea that Moorhead is undoing what Mullen built.

I agree with you in general. I will say that Arkansas and Ole Miss are worse now than they were in Mullen’s tenure, hence the bigger advantage in winning percentage in those games for Moorhead, although Kentucky is better now than they were when Mullen was here. Everybody else we play regularly is pretty much the same in both eras, and fittingly the two coaches have a very similar percentage against those teams.

You and I are on the same page though. I think Mullen is the better coach, but it’s wildly inaccurate to suggest that Moorhead has come in and destroyed everything. We have certainly not gone from “good to great” yet, but many have declared we have gone from good to bad and that’s not the case either. We are essentially in the same spot we were 2-3 years ago. 2018 was a missed opportunity, yes, but this year was always going to be more of a challenge, especially after the suspensions were announced.

JoMo in his first season had the best defense MSU ever had and it might have been the best in the SEC that year. He had personnel on offense who had proven to be able to compete in the SEC. That was simply the most underachieving team in MSU football history. So right there his time here is not a match to any previous coach. So drop all the historical comparisons.

Winning percentage vs the historic percentage when the coach arrives tells a better picture of how much over or under vs that school’s historic average. Mullen has a bigger positive gap in the difference because his win totals here elevated our overall historic percentage. He also had a .600 win percentage here. 69 wins in 115 games = .600

This times a million. If you want to do accurate historical comparisons, half of Mullen's resume has to be 2014 because that was his best State team, and you are dreaming if you think 2018 won't be the best that Moorhead ever coaches.

Furthermore, the team underachieved thanks to the one aspect of the team that Joe is solely responsible for. We can analyze historical stats til we all pass out, but here are some undeniable truths...

1. The team has regressed, period, during each of Joe’s seasons as head coach
2. The offense(Joe’s calling card) has been below average to downright putrid during Joe’s tenure
3. The team was placed on NCAA probation during Joe’s tenure

If we want to kick the can down the road by giving him another year, that’s fine, but it’s gonna take a hell of a lot more than some fiery speech in front of a podium to convince me that anything about this program is trending in the right direction.

We've gone from good to meh and sloppy. It's the unpreparedness and lack of discipline that drive most of us crazy. He said it himself, he's not going to coach effort.

No. No. No. No. No. Not only were both better than State, 2018 UF finished higher ranked than State EVER has and UK finished about the same as State's best ranking ever (other than 1940).

For arguments sake, if Moorhead did beat UK and/or UF, then they would only have 9 wins. How many 9-win SEC teams did Mullen beat in 9 years? LSU 2017 and OM 2009. Two in 9 years, and none with NFL Rookie-of-the-Year QB Dak Prescott. In 9 seasons, Mullen never beat a team that finished ranked higher than #18. Moorhead beat Texas A&M in 2018, who won 9 games and finished ranked #16.

2018 UK, 2018 UF, 2019 UT, and 2019 Kansas State (compared to 2018 KSU) were all better than everyone thought. See my SOS post above-Moorhead had tougher schedules last year and this year than every Mullen year except 2009. MUCH tougher than in 2016 and 2017.

I didn't count consolation bowl games.

But to use your methodology:
Winning percentage before Mullen: 50.0%
Mullen winning percentage: 59.3%
Percentage change: +18.5%

Winning percentage before Moorhead: 50.7%
Moorhead winning percentage: 58.3%
Percentage change: +15.0%

They got to 10 wins because they each beat us and 9 other teams. We were 10% of the equation. If Moorhead won any of those games, even with only 9 wins that team would have been a bigger victory than any win Mullen achieved in 9 years at MSU. The only win he had over a Power 5 team that ended up winning even more than 8 games was the 2009 Egg Bowl, over an OM team that picked up its 9th win in the bowl game and only finished #21 in the country. Moorhead already matched or possibly exceeded that accomplishment with a win over a 9-win Texas A&M team that finished ranked higher than that 2009 OM team.
