Okay I went and did some more research on him and his game. For the record I would still have preferred Dalton Knecht 10/10 times. However the analytics say that the strongest offensive part of Johnson’s game is actually his post up game. And assuming we loose Oscar and Bradshaw wants to stay on the perimeter there would be a giant hole for post scoring. So in that respect I can see what the coaching staff sees in him.

This kid would be perfect for us (assuming Livingston is moving on).

A frontcourt of:

Oscar
Bradshaw
Johnson
Ugonna

Is a pretty great 4 man rotation.

Johnson can also log some minutes behind Edwards at the 3 spot as well.

We get Johnson and Tshiebwe and Reeves return, we are in pretty good shape.

Top 7 should be solid. Good rotation unless the Freshmen are underwhelming.

Hopefully at least one of Onyenso, Sheppard, and Thiero can step up and be the 8th man.

That top 7 would be the best top-7 in the country IMO, at least top 5 minimum.

If those other 3 you mentioned can be solid contributors (which I think they all can and should be), we have a 10 man rotation that is really solid and versatile.

I'll take a guy who played a large role on a team who played in a National Championship game and is a winning player over the guys who want the spotlight/attention at Kentucky but don't have the winning chops to produce on the court as that spotlight/attention demands. This is also the type of player that a player development coach like John Welch can help with his jumpshot.
Has John Welch been officially introduced as a coach yet? I don’t recall seeing anything on it officially.

I'm going back and watching the UCONN game and I think he'd be a great addition. I remembered him standing out during their tournament run, but I wanted to take a closer look at him specifically. He's experienced, athletic, physical - can defend multiple positions at a high level, is used to winning, solid rebounder, and has a good offensive IQ. He wasn't asked to do much shooting or offensive creation - but honestly in the small samples his shot looks solid and there were a few late shot clock opportunities where he got himself a shot. And if DJ, Rob and Justin can create offense at a high level, it shouldn't matter anyway.

If you asked me what I wanted for the remaining roster spots - he'd check most of the boxes.

-experienced / knows how to win
-tough
-(+) defender with switch-ability

if he shot 35+% from 3, he'd be perfect

I watched some more tape on him and his shooting form looks fairly clean tbh and the volume of shots is so low it doesn’t tell a full story. If he made literally 4 more 3’s, he would’ve been at 35%. No reason he couldn't become what Toppin was down the stretch as far as jumper. Also if Bradshaw is actually a good shooter, Johnson would be better served closer to the basket anyway. He's strong and athletic and can really finish around the rim.

I officially am a fan of this kid's game

I was kidding about that-which is why I mentioned "Apparently". I don't think fans are losers, but I do think there is a group that wants to be right to validate an "in the know" perception they have of themselves or those who they communicate with being connected.

It's okay to tell someone "I don't know" when asked about an issue. because there are a ton of things you won't know even if someone you interact with knows a lot. It's not a fun response and if it makes posters think you don't know anything, so be it. But it's the truth. Thing is reality isn't always exciting or fun.
I feel like Jack pilgrim does this, which is understandable because he’s trying to get viewer. However, he leads people down fake rabbit holes

SDSU known for D and was very offensively challenged. Sounds like a perfect Cal player. That said he’d be a welcome addition. The freshmen are going nowhere by themselves.

They sure the hell made it work last year. Hopefully we get the same this year.

Well when we get bounced from the tournament because our only three point shooter goes ice cold again I guess we’ll be glad we have him
Please tell me how you would ensure that a 3point shooter never has an off night. I’m sure your answer will be great.

This is the type of kid we will need with our freshmen. 8 points/ 5 rebounds per 22 minutes at SDSU will translate to the same here. At 6'7", 225lb, this kid can defend both forward positions and give us that upperclassmen junkyard dog we've been missing off these last few Calipari teams.

We have tons of finesse guys already lined up on next year's team (including Reeves if he returns). Getting Johnson would go a long way to actually making us look like a well-rounded team. Get Reeves, Oscar, and Johnson in with the freshmen and we might actually bust out of that first weekend.

G - Wagner - Dillingham - Sheppard - Thiero
G - Reeves - Dillingham - Sheppard - Thiero
G - Edwards - Johnson - Thiero
F - Bradshaw - Johnson
C - Oscar - Onyenso

It could work. There's enough quality depth to make it happen.

I keep reading here that Cal is doing absolutely nothing yet keep seeing Tweets about players visiting. Both can't be right. I guess the reality of people visiting wins out.
We have 7 scholarship players and the portal is full of damn good talent, yet Cal is standing there doing nothing. What are we at now, 2 visits? Wow.

Can’t shoot 3’s or free throws but is a defensive monster…..I’ve seen this movie already and I hate the ending. The definition of madness is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result. But sure keep de-emphasizing shooting it’s really working out fantastic for the program.

Well I know elite defense works better for Cal because he has no earthly idea how to construct a roster with shooters, and then run the correct offensive sets for them to succeed at the level we want.

Definitely would be nice to have this kid. He would definitely have more experience than anyone on the roster when it comes to the NCAA tournament.

You know he can’t rock the boat with all his 5 star freshmen he has coming in you can’t hurt their feelings! The monster he has created is eating him now and it’s too late to change it to be honest!

Maybe I should be excited about this but I’m not
Reason to be excited is he's depth, which is what Cals teams normally lack. Reason it's hard to get it excited is nobody really gets excited about a guy that's probably about 9th in the rotation on a championship caliber team. Especially when that guy shoots about 25% from 3.

I can't wait to hear Cal tell the fans how there is no room left on the bandwagon, after every win, then cut all his post game interviews short after each loss… .again.

Cal is going to play the top 7 the majority of the minutes.

I see it being something like this with Reeves and Tshiebwe back and Johnson added (estimated minutes +/- 2 or 3 minutes):

Guards(1-3 spots)- Wagner(25)/Dillingham(25)/Reeves(25)/Edwards(25)/Sheppard(15)/Thiero(5)
Forwards(4-5 spots)- Tshiebwe(25)/Bradshaw(25)/Johnson(20)/Onyenso(10)

Oh yes and tell us how tired he is while he’s smiling and running around at all these NBA playoff games!
