My biggest issue with him is only getting to the NCAAT 1 out of 8 years at Stanford. I do think Vandy is an easier place to win than at Stanford, but the similarities in academic profile is concerning.

I want his son to come with him though if he comes. That should happen, right?
Not real sure about the easier to win idea. Didn't work out so well for the last coach. Academics... all BB players have tutors

In no way shape or form is Dawkins close to JT3. People on here just associate him with Big John and they hate Big John. There may also be some recency bias since we all saw UCF's moral victory every Duke, but overall Dawkins has been awful.

It's definitely not a hire I'm super excited about, but there are some positives.

Stanford, largely, sucks as a basketball program so he sort of gets a break there. He has been decent at UCF but you qonder if that was only because Tacko is an easy piece to build a defense around.

Vanderbilt has things to sell (contrary to what some believe) in terms of offering families a shot at ensuring their entire family is set for life. A VU diploma is as valuable as any in college basketball AND you get to live in Nashville AND you get to play in the SEC.

It's a fairly easy sell and if Dawkins can parlay his time with Duke and Rat Face with his 9 years in the NBA, I think he has a shot to be a good hire.

That said, I don't know and wouldn't be surprised if he was terrible either.

Blowing this up with Drew may turn out to be a 3-4 year rebuild where if we had kept Drew for one more year, the following coach would have taken over a program in much better shape.

Really? Pac12 vs. SEC. Stanford is much easier to win with the right coach than Vandy. Compare their tourney runs.

It's easier to get players into Vandy than it is Stanford.

Other than MIke Montgomery years, Stanford has been terrible.

This is true, Stanford does NOT lower their admissions policy for any athlete!!! Duke and Vandy do! Big difference!! I think Dawkins would be a solid hire!!

Correct. It's not like VU lowers to a state school level, but they will make exceptions if the student athlete has good grades but not great test scores.

At Stanford, you have to have great test scores and great grades. Big difference.

Dawkins is a great fit

Coaching searches are always very interesting.

Agents of coaches are always trying to get their clients more money and I have a feeling Dawkins' agent might be doing just that.

There are several really good coaches out there not making a ton of money and we'd be in the 2.5-3.5 million per year range, so I do think we'll be able to attract a decent coach.

For reference, Dawkins is making 1.1 at UCF.

Yeah, there could never be a scandal at Stanford concerning admissions for athletes and have recruited athletes receive special consideration. o_O

I have not seen much of Dawkins and idk how he will recruit. The fact is he had Duke beat and they looked well prepared. His son looks amazing and it could be a lot worse of a hire iMO.

So when is the Dawkins hire official?

It's officially a maybe or maybe not at this point....

Vanderbilt is so weird that we could have a coach in place then has to do a background check taking more time before anything is confirmed. We also could NOT have a coach in place and be pretty far from that happening.

I'm leaning towards no Dawkins and a name that hasn't even been mentioned...

Being a Vandy fan is fun.

I get losing all games in sec is bad
Drew got the 5 stars
One went down, but is that fair?
Thought he'd have at least another year...

Stanford was good until Dawkins got there. In the 8 years Dawkins was there, they made the tourney 1 time. In the 8 years prior to his arrival, they made the tourney 7 times. Johnny brought that program down.

First off, it looks like I was wrong about John Thompson III.

The latest is that Vanderbilt is going to announce Johnny Dawkins to be their new head coach.

What do y'all think about this hire?

Better or worse than JTIII?
What hire? Who confirmed it again? Isn't this Vandy fans just hoping out loud? Oh, if this DID happen, his kid must never want to graduate. He just sat out a year to go to UCF.

Funny how some folks think that Nashville is some big draw. For who? Big Joe Syphillis and The Infected Daughters looking to capture the music world with that smash hit 'Baby Got no Titties But Her Brother Don't Care?'

Yeah, go to that powerhouse and celebrate breaking .500 for a decade. Leave Orlando, million and a half population, it's endless entertainment and tons of real cash for that eternal bango twang. Great idea. Not.

Call me when it a fact.

Vandy should be the Duke of the SEC if they ever landed the right coach. They can sell 14,000 tickets every game. Nashville would kill to have a top 10 basketball team. They have the money and the Nashville mid-state area produces 3-4 d-1 guys every year. CM Newton did a great job there. Dawkins, Avery Johnson, or Thad Matta would be solid hires.
They are probably longing for the days of this turd LOL.

Update:

One source saying Dawkins was in Nashville yesterday and that it is a done deal, all but announced.

Dawkins was meeting with his AD at UCF as late as 11pm last night.

Nothing confirmed though....

Name of your 'One Source'? And Community Sports Report is not a source. It's a homer twitter page.

But there is a 7"1' guy named Bol visiting at UCF today. Hmmm...where have I heard that name??

This is nonsense.

Duke and Vandy basketball players are not seen as academics. People know they didn’t earn the spot and had tutors handling the harder classloads. Without a basketball they wouldn’t be at those schools. Not all, but most.

Nonserious employer in a competitive field is going to accept a basketball player diploma from Vandy and Duke over a more qualified candidate who earned it.

This set for life crap is nonsense. And the way it’s sold is nonsense. There is no benefit in the real world unless that employer is a booster of the program.

Your post reflects poorly on you.

What are you so mad about?

I cannot speak for Duke but you're way off on the VU kids. They have to do the work or they will fail out. Happens all of the time where kids just can't cut it in the classroom.

Vandy will let in kids who wouldn't get in otherwise, but if they can't cut it in the classroom, they transfer.

My daughter is in classes with a lot of the basketball team and football team. She has told me repeatedly how smart those kids are and how they are checked very closely.

That’s awesome to hear. Unless everybody is lying to me, that’s my understanding too. These kids earn their VU diplomas and that is something to be proud of.
