Compare his resume to Drew's prior to being hired.

At least he's from a long line of sanctimony. He'll be a great fit at Vandy.

Dawkins is a good hire for Vandy. He’s an up and comer who overachieved and is due for a bigger job.
Not sure a 55 year old guy who got fired from a PAC 12 job after 8 years at the helm (and a losing conference record) would qualify as an up and comer. My worry about Dawkins, is if he couldn't win at Stanford, which has similar academic standards as Vandy, then what makes people think he can win in Nashville.

Because he should have beaten Duke on Sunday. Remove that and no one would think this is potentially a good hire.

You really want some dude who couldn’t win at a similar and easier job (Stanford)? Vandy can do better.

Seems like a good fit for both sides. Another shot for Dawkins to position himself for the big seat in Durham ... when it opens. He obviously blew it the first time at Stanford.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, Coach K can't coach forever.

He's not a great coach. But he's a solid one. And important for Vandy (probably) but not most other schools, he's played at a top academic school, and coached at a top academic school. So he understands those challenges for the players and for recruiting better than most.

Dawkins is one of the few former K players that is likable.

I think this means his son probably declares for the draft (think he's a JR).

Man, I'd have to think hard about offering Dawkins if his son wasn't coming with him. Getting his son here makes the rebuild quicker, makes it easier to recruit from a position of recent success, etc.

If we had a lineup of:

Saben Lee
Aaron nesmith
Dawkins
Simi Shittu
Dylan Disu

That is one you can win with.

Maybe his son can complete his degree and become a grad transfer.

Stanford hard to recruit to, Vandy as well. Recruiting is the life blood of any coach so that will pretty much determine his fate.

Not sure about his Xs and Os but heretofore he has never done more with less. SEC tougher than the PAC 12. And he will never get the whistle his mentor gets.

OK hire and much more apt than JT III

Don't expect the Dores to be beating the Cats anytime soon.

Great hire for Vandy! He seems really nice and young’s s I bet someone would have got him. How long did he stay at Wofford?

First off, it looks like I was wrong about John Thompson III.

The latest is that Vanderbilt is going to announce Johnny Dawkins to be their new head coach.

What do y'all think about this hire?

Better or worse than JTIII?
Nothing could have been worse for Vandy. JTIII's only claim to coaching significance, IMHO, is that he's JTIII.

It’s weird to me that people here think Johnny Dawkins is easily better than JTIII. Thompson’s resume is a mile ahead of Dawkins. Thompson won his conference 6 times in 18 years, Dawkins has never finished better than 3rd in 11 years. Thompson went to the tournament 10 times, Dawkins 2. Dawkins topped out with a Sweet Sixteen, Thompson has been to the final four.

IMHO much better. Played at Duke, coached at Stanford. I believe he would understand Vanderbilt athletics.

This is definitely the best place to talk SEC hoops that I'm aware of. Most of our fans on that site are football first fans, here it's the opposite.

My biggest issue with him is only getting to the NCAAT 1 out of 8 years at Stanford. I do think Vandy is an easier place to win than at Stanford, but the similarities in academic profile is concerning.

I want his son to come with him though if he comes. That should happen, right?
Really? Pac12 vs. SEC. Stanford is much easier to win with the right coach than Vandy. Compare their tourney runs.

It's easier to get players into Vandy than it is Stanford.

Other than MIke Montgomery years, Stanford has been terrible.
Vandy is a pretty good school. Have you read a paper lately? If you can play, or even if you can't, you can get into these schools if you bribe a coach. Vandy academics = Standford academics, if you can play basketball.

It's Vandy. Not like they are going to draw an established coach from a top program.
Vandy should be the Duke of the SEC if they ever landed the right coach. They can sell 14,000 tickets every game. Nashville would kill to have a top 10 basketball team. They have the money and the Nashville mid-state area produces 3-4 d-1 guys every year. CM Newton did a great job there. Dawkins, Avery Johnson, or Thad Matta would be solid hires.

I haven’t seen this as being a done deal. Am I missing something?

I’ve googled his name and can’t find even a mention of it.

If it's a done deal, it's secret at this point. In other words, as of now, it's not a done deal.

I'll post what I hear today.

Always possible that Dawkins, who is making only 1.1, used us for leverage and more money.

In no way shape or form is Dawkins close to JT3. People on here just associate him with Big John and they hate Big John. There may also be some recency bias since we all saw UCF's moral victory every Duke, but overall Dawkins has been awful.
