A long-time Yankee hater am I, but Sterling deserves much respect as one of the greats. RIP.

He has been missed for sure listening to the games. May he RIP! Iconic announcer for my Yanks.
Agreed. Never a pure "textbook" announcer, but he was a part of my life for so long listening to all those games on the radio or the replays of his calls on WFAN, which Mike & the Dog started a long, long time ago and helped propel Sterling to even more popularity.

Sort of what you expect from a home team radio guy -- a homer to some extent (if not more than "some" extent lol), flair for the dramatic, energy, great radio voice and kept you engaged even when he was making mistakes, which were sometimes more entertaining than had he gotten the call correct.

Bern Baby Bern…

I remember reading somewhere that he had eyesight problems later on in life, which explains why he always misjudged balls he thought originally were home runs.

An institution. Provided the soundtrack for so many memorable times with his own style and flare. What longevity: 1989-2024 with NYY alone. Basically grew up with him.

RIP to a true legend.
