A friend invited me to speak at an Atlanta-area meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution. The members are all somewhat expert in Revolutionary War history, and I am not. So, to avoid starting from scratch on a topic I know nothing about, I plan to discuss General John Stark and his namesake, Starkville.

Do any of you have any books or other resources you'd recommend on General Stark and/or the process of naming Starkville after him? I'll certainly fire up the Google machine but would like to tap this board's collective knowledge to see if there's a preferred starting point.

I have no information but I would suggest also sending an email to MSU Libraries Special Collections. The only caveat being they may be limited in what they can access at this time.

It was an open-ended invitation as to the topic but with a strong hint that something related to the Revolutionary War would be preferable. And it's not that I know "nothing" about it, just that my level of expertise on the Revolution is likely to be a bit below that of the typical audience member.

...but he always held firm in his patriotic and anti-British views on sidewalks.

You've probably heard his most famous quote, "I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me sidewalks or give me death"

So why would you speak about a man that lived his whole life in New Hampshire? The only tie in to Starkville is they named it after him along with 20 other places after his death.

I don’t know if any of y’all have the Smithsonian Channel but there is a great show called Aerial America where they show states or regions from the air. On the New England one they talked about Stark and his role in the RW.

Reminds me of the Andy Griffith episode where they are researching to see who the descendent is that was kin to Revolutionary War hero Nathan Tibbs and it turns out to be Otis. Maybe you can just show that episode and open up the floor for discussion

Yea I still have Directv, I’d hate to lose it. If you have Direct it’s worth $5 a month for that package, it’s basically a cross between what the History Channel used to be and NatGeo.

Found this interesting:

"As Washington prepared to go to New York in anticipation of a British attack there, he knew that he desperately needed experienced men like John Stark to command regiments in the Continental Army. George Washington immediately offered Stark a command in the Continental Army. Stark and his New Hampshire regiment agreed to attach themselves to the Continental Army. The men of the New Hampshire Line were sent as reinforcements to the Continental Army during the Invasion of Canada in the spring of 1776. After the retreat of the Continental Army from Canada, Stark and his men traveled to New Jersey to join Washington's main army. They were with Washington in the battles of Princeton and Trenton in late 1776 and early 1777.

After Trenton, Washington asked Stark to return to New Hampshire to recruit more men for the Continental Army. Stark agreed, but upon returning home, learned that while he had been fighting in New Jersey, a fellow New Hampshire Colonel named Enoch Poor had been promoted to Brigadier General in the Continental Army. In Stark's opinion, Poor had refused to march his militia regiment to Bunker Hill to join the battle, instead choosing to keep his regiment at home. Stark, an experienced woodsman and fighting commander, had been passed over for someone with no combat experience and apparently no will to fight. On March 23, 1777, Stark resigned his commission in disgust, although he pledged to make it dificult as 17 to turn in to Taco Bell if you are heading west on hwy 12."

I have it on good authority that he built a very large log cabin style home in his namesake town in Mississippi. He pioneered a completely ingenious new construction method to protect the home from insects and moisture when he used a combination of human feces and rotten animal remains as the chinking between the logs. It was kind of ingenious... The only flaw would be found centuries later when it was discovered that the act of "flame broiling" would activate the original smell of Stark's chinking.
