I know many—including myself—were lukewarm about this promotion, but I don’t know how the debut could have been any better. Offense made some clutch plays, moved the chains in critical situations, and had enough points, but the defense won the day.

We stopped them on 4th down…what?…3 times? Stopped a critical 2 point conversion attempt?

Awesome defensive performance. If this is who Butler is, I could learn to love the guy as defensive coordinator.

Still need to get better getting off the field on 3rd down, but overall impressed.

Well called game with a couple exception. That delayed blitz from the outside in a game where guys can’t get their footing was a bad one, but otherwise I was encouraged. Pretty early to say but I love the young talent we have coming back.

Bend but don’t break. But imagine if BC had a FG kicker and a punter.
the field was really bad and kickers weren’t comfortable with the footing. They went a couple times on 4th and 1 inside the 10. And when we forced downs the other t times they are not trying FG from 45 plus in those conditions.

Then perhaps you call the game differently. But the fact that they’ve had five field goal attempts all season tells you that they weren’t going to attempt any field goals. Then when they did you understood why.

Can't wait to see next year with the young fast studs on the roster and incoming portal killers. Attack!!
Agree about the incoming kids. Many positives that we got the win and the 4th down stops. My critique would be tackling. Not sure if they are taught their technique or some of the players are scared of aggressive contact. The dline tackles well because they put themselves in good position to be squared. The Shavers kid knows how to tackle. He uses his squared shoulder and body to drive the opponent back. The others I've noticed are jumping, diving , or reaching to make the tackle. An example was when we had them pinned down and the BC kid busted a 50 yard run. Hartzog should have blew him up but he only reached for him. Tackling is a mindset to oppose my will on you.... Well a lot of credit IMO goes to #0 and #9 stuffing the line. We'll see just how Butler does without those two next year but of course I hope Butler is good.

He had them looking prepared which I was happy to see.

Need to see what he looks like without Nash and Ty

Was going to start my own similar thread about the D, but some things came up this afternoon. Yes, there were a couple times we blitzed and got burned. That goes with the territory. But we kept their QB off rhythm so he didn't get comfortable and pick us apart. I haven't watched the film, but it seemed we ran a lot of 4 man front with 2 or 3 backers. Did not see a lot of 3-3-5. And we got off the field on 3rd down, or they went to 4th down and we stopped them. I got SO TIRED of the bend but don't break mindset we have endured for years. Hope this is the start of a new "attack" scheme. I would have to reach hard to criticize the defense this game, but if pressed I would say wtf was our problem with stopping the swing passes and little screens to their left side? They kept running that and we kept having trouble with it.

They will leave a big hole. RVP looked pretty good, but looking at him lining up tonight, he needed that redshirt year physically.

The outside blitzes were scrapped in the first half because no one could turn in on the grass. Wasn’t able to attack at all angles.

If the secondary improves I think you’ll see a good defense.

Crazy thing is that sloppy fields usually benefit the offense because if you have to react when you don't have your center of gravity in position to the cuts being made, you usually lose your footing. Keeping them way below their avg. points per game is a good accomplishment.

Like that 20 guys got a tackle today. Getting guys experience will pay off for 2025. Film helps to let guys see themselves in the spot and not the guy ahead of them: reality vs theory.

Get bigger, stronger, faster and smarter this off season and let’s see the development keep going.

I am not a fan of the blitzes from depth, especially with some guys in our secondary, it takes too long and the QB can usually see it coming. Other than that I thought he called a great game.
