Because all though 10 points or whatever it exactly was Joey Downes doesn’t have what it takes to be on that court at the time. Let’s say they put him in and he turns it over leading to a quick bucket. Turgeon calls time out and then puts the starters in. Cowan makes a play and hits a 3 now it’s a 5 pt game with a minute left. If that happens and a walk on is out there, pike is toast

It would have made for a nice moment, but while Pike won't admit it, he knew how much was riding on the game.

The players lost focus and game started to get interesting. If Maryland hits one or two 3s they are within striking distance. Unfortunately guys couldn’t get it done for downes which is unfortunate. Too much on the line.

maybe pikiell could have stolen a minute with 3 minutes left before Maryland’s Lin change... maybe

I would have rather see him start with other 2 seniors - who did start - get him a couple of minutes while teams were feeling each other out and getting settled down. Then sub him our at first opportunity

Yeah, for all the hard work and sacrifice Joe has put in, it wouldn't have affected the outcome to let him play the first 90 seconds. I felt badly for him.

He could have called timeut with 20 seconds left after we got that final rebound and let him hold the ball to the whistle.

If Downes wants someone to blame, then he can blame his teammates for playing like absolute dopes the last 3 minutes. If the lead was 20, he would have come in.

Aside from that, no, you do not play Downes in the first 90 seconds, or in the last or anywhere in between when you are playing a top ten team in a must win game for the first NCAA tourney berth in 30 years. LOL.

And I doubt Downes was upset, or wants anyone to feel bad for him. He knows the deal.

Yeah, it sucks, but unfortunately the game was still close enough at the end due to us screwing around in the last 3 minutes that we couldn't risk it.

I have seen teams with a lot more on the line start a kid and pull him first opportunity. No way he would have caused any problems in that time frame that would have been the reason it cost the team the game if we lost

Imagine if he was put in and somehow cost us the game? I mean c'mon, its not worth the risk. He would have been run off campus. Is him playing for the last 10 seconds really going to make him feel good? Not everyone gets a trophy and not everyone gets to play

Maryland had a chance to cut it to six with about 40 seconds to play. You do that, press, foul, etc. and who knows? A couple of bad decisions and suspect and-one foul calls on the other end put us in the position. Bottom line is that we were not in a position to mess around.

The same posters nitpicking on this would be the same ones killing Pike if something went horribly wrong.

I don’t personally know Joey Downes but I’m sure he understands why he didn’t play last nite on senior nite... Hope we make the Dance and he gets an opportunity to play in a NCAA.
