Not true. I live in Philly and I've had my roof analyzed by a solar company. I could install on my roof right now for under $10,000 and it will provide enough energy to power my house year round, even in the Winter. Also, temperature doesn't affect it.
I would agree temp doesn't affect solar but I also agree about upstate NY not being ideal for solar. If you are anywhere near the great lakes (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse) you get the lake affect snow all winter long.. Between Halloween and Mother's Day you very seldom see the sun.

So true. Plus the panels themselves get all caked up with snow, so that even if they're heated, so much snow falls so rapidly (the lake effect stuff) it's virtually impossible to keep them free of several inches of snow for any extended periods of time.

I hate them too but better than this.

I understand. We have gotten a ton better at reclaiming strip mines. But what is strange, you never hear anything about how awful earth removal is when a highway is being built, or a plant, or hospital. Just curious how these are different???

But as I noted it will be up for reelection in 2018. And there would not be a previously elected incumbent in that seat (i.e. It would be the person appointed by the Gov). That makes it easier to flip to the R's.
That seat is vulnerable in 2018 even if Manchin still in it. We have 3 R Congressmen, each of whom could run for it along with some other higher profile Rs.

Who do the Ds have? Manchin right now; really no one else with enough profile to hold onto that seat. So if Manchin takes the appointment if one is offered, then most interesting event would be who gets appointed to that seat? That person then has 2 years to fund raise and build up support to head off the R attack for that seat, which will attract a lot of national $$. Again--even if Manchin keeps the seat, it will be a huge contest in 2018 the Rs could win.

So who is a high profile D who could take the seat, hold it and build up support such that the Ds have a shot to hold onto it? Manchin's the best hope, but if he is gone it is up in the air. Tomblin is the most interesting appointment, and right now, the only D who has a shot in 2018 to hold onto that seat (I'm assuming Manchin to Energy). But if it is not Tomblin, what D given 2 years in there in that seat could give Ds the best shot to hold onto it?

That's all well and good, but that doesn't change the fact that natural gas is just killing coal domestically right now. Add in a dramatic decrease in foreign demand and it isn't a good place for WV coal. And that's not even to consider the fact that Elon Musk's SolarCity are developing roofing material that cost the same as traditional roofs, yet have solar cells in them. What will that do to the market if that become ubiquitous? Within 20 years, you are going to see widespread adoption of solar energy in the US. And the reasons for it are not about the environment...its about how cheap you can power your home.

WV needs to diversify. The longer they stay in denial and on the teet of big coal, the more it will hurt them long term.
So I read the article and in the article it says the roofing is "as much as 20 times more than cheap asphalt shingles".

This 100k a houre pricetag is why that whole industry needs guys like Obama to force taxpayers to kick in 70k a house to make it competitive.

Donald Trump apparently exaggerated the number of jobs saved in the Carrier deal
http://theweek.com/speedreads/66573...ly-exaggerated-number-jobs-saved-carrier-deal

tjebarr this whole argument about "jobs saved, jobs lost" is based on a fundamentally misunderstood aspect about our free enterprise economy.

It's called "static analysis". Government statisticians use this to assume a narrowly defined set of outcomes completely disregarding the "dynamic effect" of human behavior once incentives are removed or introduced.

In this case, the incentives introduced by those jobs "saved" at Carrier are not only going to keep those people working, but their suppliers, customers, other businesses who sell goods and services to those Carrier workers, as well the ancillary benefits of Carrier expanding it's markets. Those are all factors to consider when weighing just how many jobs are being "saved" by Carrier's decision to retain some parts of its manufacturing in the U.S.

Dynamic vs static scoring in both budget analysis as well as job creation, retention, or loss, is a little mentioned often misunderstood yet extremely important aspect of any type of jobs announcement no matter how seemingly insignificant. It's not a zero sum game. One aspect of job retention causes a multiplier effect throughout the economy just as it does when jobs are lost.

Many more people are effected either way.
