I don't know if you'll be able to open, but it's a good story about what we were discussing about allowing people to stay in the US.

If that link doesn't work, I think you can read it on Google under "Don Bacon story in Washington Post"

From the article, "According to ICE’s own numbers, people with no criminal conviction and with only an immigration violation and no other pending charge are now the single largest group the agency holds in detention."

This is why the roving gangs of ICE agents in cities are wrong, authoritarian, and have gotten such pushback from normal Americans. Maga can share articles all day of anecdotal and one off instances of "violent criminals" ICE has arrested, but the truth of the matter is that ICE is focused on removing anyone and everyone that is undocumented, regardless of their contribution to society.

It's sickening.

Truth, I posted this on the other board.

"ICE just took the grandparents who adopted three American boys after their mom died of breast cancer. TSA tipped them off at the airport gate.

Roberto and Lola Avalos were walking off a flight home from a family reunion in California when ICE agents met them at the gate in Birmingham, Alabama. Both had work permits. Both worked at a local Chick-fil-A. Neither has a criminal record.

Their daughter Karina was fighting breast cancer when they came from Mexico in 2015 to help. She died in 2017. They adopted her three young boys, the oldest barely a teenager, and raised them in Pelham.

Those boys are Marvin, Orlando and Acxel. Marvin is 22 now. When he turned 18 he sponsored his grandparents for green cards, and those petitions have been sitting with the government ever since. Orlando was named Gatorade Alabama Boys Soccer Player of the Year in June. Their grandfather, a former pro in Mexico, was the one who coached them.

ICE didn't have to look for them. Reuters says the tip came from TSA, which now runs passenger lists against ICE databases. TSA has handed ICE records on more than 31,000 travelers, and more than 1,200 people have been arrested off those tips.

"You see all this stuff in the news about families being separated," Marvin said, "but you never really think that you're going to experience it firsthand."

The 15-year-old "hasn't come out of his room." The 16-year-old is "more angry than anything."

Lola was granted bond on Friday and is expected home Monday. Roberto is still in ICE custody.

ICE's statement to a Birmingham TV station: "Both illegal aliens entered the U.S. legally but refused to depart on required dates, violating our nation's laws."

ICE failed to mention the truth: they came to America while their daughter battled cancer, adopted her three sons after she died, raised them for years, and had Green Card applications still pending when they were arrested."

I understand why it happens, but there should be some common sense application. Unfortunately, as I posted earlier, if the government makes an exception for one and not another, the "another" sues and the courts determine inapplicable application of the law and off we go...

But, based on the story by rep Bacon, there is a way for the head of DHS or his representative to make specific determinations...deporting people like this is in accordance with the law, but really doesn't meet the common sense test.

We really need the Congress to come together on a bill that makes sense...

There are options if they choose to use them.

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and government attorneys have the authority to decide how to allocate their enforcement resources. Under long-standing guidance, agents and prosecutors are instructed to consider positive factors, such as whether an individual is a primary caregiver to minor children or household members with serious hardships. They can choose to dismiss a case or delay a removal based on these factors. However, because this is a discretionary policy rather than a fixed law, enforcement actions can vary significantly depending on current federal priorities and individual field office decisions."

well, what we're doing is "watering down" our enforcement capabilities and deporting workers that we need.

I understand the wage arguments and the "who will pick our fruit" arguments, but there are ways for us to accomplish all that we need and at the same time to get rid of those criminal factions that we don't want...unfortunately we're too focused on boys in girls sports, the midterms, ballrooms, and other issues outside of those most important ones.

It would be nice to have candidates who run on working to build coalitions of both parties to get things done

Who is focused on boys in girls sports?? The magas are the ONLY ones I see talking about it. Remember, the Supreme Court already ruled on this. Who keeps this discussion going?

Agreed on unnecessary enforcement actions. Even the ones who voted for it are asking him to slow it down.

my post was relative to the Congress in general..no matter who is pushing the "boys in girls sports" issue, the Congress neither party is pushing the critical issues. Now before you remind me that republicans control the Congress, nothing stops a Democrat senator or representative from walking across the hall and speaking with a Republican about reforming immigration or healthcare...and none of the virtue signaling..a serious proposal that can pass.

How will they have time for that knowing they spend most of it fighting about males playing in female sports? There are only so many hours in a day!

The problem is that the ACTUAL ISSUE of undocumented immigration, including how weak Joe Biden was at the border, didn't require the response that the Trump Administration implemented. And they did it unilaterally, immediately, and in an unprecedented way.

I like the article you posted. I appreciate the bipartisan bill he's trying to get passed. But regardless, we never should've gotten here (with how ICE has handled the issue), and we didn't get here BECAUSE Biden was weak at the border.

We got here because the Trump administration handled the undocumented immigration issue in a way that was unnecessary and unprecedented.

The truth is, the American people hated it. Not just dems- the majority of Americans hated how ICE was deployed, and this more than anything will cost Republicans the midterms.

lol at the far left thinking their wailing about deportations is going to stop ICE. We the people voted on this. We said deport ALL of them. Not some of them. Why do democrats hate our democracy so much???

Deportations are good for the American tax payer. We need to INCREASE the number of people being kicked out of our country.

Excellent article and just a wildly unfortunate outcome. This is the question from the article:

“Mariana’s case urgently raises the question of whether this country still has the moral clarity to differentiate between people who endanger it and people who strengthen it.”

I think we have the moral character, we just don't have the process. The law says if you're here illegally you're eligible for deportation...if you request asylum -and 85-90% are denied - then an order for deportation is issued. If we're going to get to a common sense policy we need a new or updated law...and we need both parties to come to agreement, and good luck with that
