iirc, #7 Miller gave up some stuff last week, looked better this week.. but I am pretty sure I saw #5 Sanders over-shift to his left to shade toward Milelr's man on a big pass play for Miami where they threw to the middle where Sanders should have been to at least prevent that near TD.

#9 Elad.. should have been called for a hit OOB.. trailed his man badly too many times and takes bad lines... as have others. I don 't get it.. do they assume they are faster than they are? Or that the opponent couldn't be as fast as they are?

Are we blowing coverage because we don't know our assignments under what conditions or are we just bad? or a little of both?

Outside of Mascoe- our DB's just seem slow or maybe you are right and they are taking bad lines. And this seems crazy for a GS coached team. Miller makes some big plays but does not seem consistent. Elad- he is a big kid and could really be an intimidator at Safety but I haven't seen it and he seems to be playing slow and Sanders seems to have regressed.
This needs to clean up or it will get ugly against real WR's. Our LB's have played horrible and we get no pressure on QB's- so all of these things add up and affect our coverage as well.
Maybe the sloppiest defense I have seen under GS

Playing “slow” is sometimes due to not being comfortable or understanding the defensive schematics. If the players are “thinking” too much, they are going to appear to be a few steps slow. It may be related to that or maybe the players aren’t athletic enough, either way the DB coaches need to do a better job. The staff targeted and signed Elad, if it doesn’t work out with him, it falls on the defensive staff and HC.

watching Elad it’s 100% a coaching issue and not a skill issue. Everything he’s doing back can be corrected.

"Elad takes a lot of chances and is out of position"

Havent watched UNLV games but he may have just roamed against lesser athletic teams and been able to have it not be exploited. He may have a lot of ingrained bad habits. The facts that he's played a lot of games may exacerbate his issues.

Doesn't appear to be a lack of athleticism. GS needs to spend time teaching the secondary some coverage basics as they appear in question.

Once they understand the defense, they will be able to play "downhill", as the legions of hack-*** announcers are fond of saying.

Elad takes a lot of chances and is out of position he needs to stay disciplined but yes he has not played well! Wouldn’t be surprised if Schiano makes a change
The issues with both Sanders and Elad are correctable. Schiano spent a lot of time with the defense last week trying to correct some of the issues. I suspect he'll be spending more time with the two of them in particular this week.

They won't be making a change any time soon. The position is fairly banged up with Gilley and Shaw out for the season and Fuse listed as out for both games so far. That leaves Joines, Ofurie, Hayer and Crumpler as the options.

A lot of Elad’s mistakes seem to not come from being slow, but from taking the wrong angle and completely missing a tackle/coverage, which is pretty disappointing considering he was brought in to add experience.

if he is just going to make freshman level mistakes we might as well play a freshman who has more upside (in future years of eligibility).

I am hoping it can be corrected quickly. It's funny- watching him in pads- he looks so much bigger than his bio says he is- I had to look back and he is listed at 6ft 202. But on the field he looks a bit bigger.

The worst part is he is taking high stakes risks at the worst possible time. The late hit and the interception attempt on Miami's last drive were inexcusable. All they had to do was burn some clock. Not sure how coachable that is for a 7th year senior.

Looking at his game log last year, UNLV played against some decent competition- Kansas, Syracuse, Boise State (twice) and Cal, and he was active in all of those games, and it's not like there was a huge step up in competition. He also played in the MAC for 2 years. Hopefully, just a bad game and correctable mistakes.

On one of the QB Finn's big runs, instead of maintaining inside leverage, he overpursued to the point that he ran wider than the LB who was engaged with a blocker and the QB cut back inside across Elad's face and left the defense in the dust. Hold his inside position and he's in position to make a tackle for a modest gain along the sideline. That's just Football IQ.

It is a difficult situation. If you make changes you are likely inserting less talented players (or they would already be starters). If you do not make changes, you may be telling the current players they can do whatever they want.. There is no price to pay for not playing assignment D properly.

I doubt the latter is occurring because these guys are getting called out in the position group meetings when they are reviewing the game film.

Greg will likely be spending some time with them to try and accelerate the leaning curve.

Didn't you know Rutgers has the next Ed Reed and Ronnie Lott waiting to "just give them a chance" but Schiano is too stubborn.
I have no idea what the other safeties on the depth chart bring.

I do know that currently Elad is bringing horrible play and basic level mistakes, and no matter what happens is gone after this year. At least working in someone with more eligibility would mean that if they improve it would help in the future.

The future is now, considering the portal exists, no one knows who will be on what team next season.

With his size he would seem to be the natural for the Izien position in the 4-2-5.

Jones, Fuse, Ofurie, Hayer.
Fuse has been listed as out. The other two have had walk-ons play ahead of them against Miami-Ohio last week. And Hayer is likely a redshirt anyway this year.

Joines is the only one that is in the mix and you don't yank a guy over correctable mistakes. But it's apparent you have no idea what mistakes are being made.
