Makes sense. If you want to marry a doctor, go where the doctors are
One of my good friends in college was dating a girl in sorority at UNL. She told us one day that some of her friends would sign up for certain classes where they would be more likely to meet future doctors and/or lawyers.

I thought it was brilliant.

The plain Jane basketball player from Iowa likes being in college. She knows she’s making way more now than she will in the NBA.

MRS degree. It’s a real thing and has been forever. The smart, average looking girl does her homework and tries to identify which lineman will get drafted. I think those guys settle in and have 6 kids by 30. They aren't quite the players that running backs and receivers are.

I get what you’re saying but ultimately I don’t get the “sex trafficking” in this example. Consenting adults who willingly take them up on their offer to fly out to see them seems a lot different than sex trafficking.
Yes this is not Sex trafficking, if she accepts one of these Flyouts she is doing this willingly. Now if she thinks they are not expecting sex for this this she is a little naive.

Believe it or not, attendance for LSU gymnastics is up because college guys go see her and make posters and signs...kind of as a joke but also to shoot their shot.

I would not imagine it actually helps the school all that much other than just exposure.
point was that these social media 'influencers' are mostly worthless people who didn't have the motivation or discipline to get an actual job. Be interesting to see how dependent on gubmint they are after they actually grow up. Pretty sad caricature of what our society has become, worshipping stupid people like this.

Well it is an actual job in the sense that they are being paid for services. It's the free market at work.

If these influencers would invest the money well, they will probably be fine in the long run. But we all know that most will blow through the money like most pro athletes and celebrities do.

What??? You do know they are both D1 athletes (eliminates lack of motivation/discipline ******** your spewing) and are capitalizing on the way marketing and business operates nowadays.. why would you trash on a 19/20 yr old girl for making as much as she can while she can then assume that she's just some moron because she's cute? She could be football teams nutritionist in 15 years for all you know... I wouldn't say people are worshiping anyone, its just how social media/internet is now.. No different than back in the day when people ran to buy magazines to see the models in swimsuits, it just now at everyone's fingertips

same guy who's likely held onto his middling job for a decade-plus with both hands

Exactly...

Now, the looks and body will go, we all know that, but the money they make now and the connections they make now, that will be another pay off in 5-10 years.

I LOVE the idea of the NIL in principle, am skeptical as to whether or not it’ll benefit NU in general, just can’t wrap my head around wasting money on gen-Z wannabe celebs, because it’s pretty much what they are. Celebs make money too, but they’re still mostly worthless people that no one should give a **** about. This all really should be its own DSM-5 diagnosis…

Fixation (obsession) on social media is not a ‘talent’. It’s a sickness. Guess people can throw money away on whatever they want, tho. Agree to the capitalist structure of it all. Just seems like betting on a really slow horse with shiny sequins as opposed to the one that’ll win for you.

I mean, it is just being booster but in a different way.

Before it was "Hey Husker fans, we need your money for a new weight room"

Now it is "Hey Husker fans, we need your money to sign players"

I can list a lot of reasons I dislike it but I would not trash an athlete as worthless and dumb if they decide to pursue it the way you did...and in rereading my comment to you I wished I wouldn't have called you name...my bad and, apologies.

Not trashing athletes as worthless and dumb… I’m trashing ‘influencers’ as worthless and dumb. These gals are ‘influencers’ who happen to have a talent… just don’t think it’s on par with, say, Arch Manning. Or Caitlin Clark, since we’re talkin girls.

Some of those influences make more money then you and I will ever dream of.

Most of them are CONSTANTLY working. Even if you don't consider it work.

They may look like they're just living life taking pictures but what they're actually doing is constantly trying to build a brand and photos, editing etc takes a ton of work.

Keep studying at Tate U and dreaming of Lambo’s while working on your Triceps. Your future is bright.
While I am not a huge Tate fan there is a lot of truth in what he says (some of it)

Ever try being the "nice guy", the guy friend that is always there to help at a drop of a hat...it is a fools game.

Years ago, When I thought that was what worked and what girls wanted, I had this friend, she was a hot girl and of course I played the nice guy bit...trying to win her over. We hung out a lot but it was not progressing, one time she even called me in the morning to pick up her...from some random guy's apt.

After that, I decided to no longer put the ***** on a pedestal and just sort changed my interactions. No more "asking for a date" instead I would just make my plans known and if girls wanted to come, great. The more unavailable I made myself, the more available girls became. And I also discovered that you had to turn things flirty and sexual quickly...or be friend-zoned. And if I got friend-zoned, I would me sure to use that girl to meet her friends.

I am not saying you have to be mean but you can't be a doormat either.

I have a good friend that married "up" and we were out once and she called him or texted him, he basically told her "no" to whatever she was asking about that time and when we started talking after he put his phone down he was like "You have to establish boundaries or they will try to walk all over you".

I'm just happy to see Pole Vault getting attention... Especially at Nebraska, even if it's for other reasons... It's an incredible sport that doesn't get much attention. Additionally, the people in the sport are some of the most genuine folks I ever had the pleasure of meeting.

My son Pole Vaulted until he got sidelined by Covid and then he never could get caught back up to where he was so he went back to full time wrestling... PV is one of those sports you can't fall away from as it's a use it or lose it kind of thing...
