Not the whole top! Just the top front, I even thought it hit further back.

If the ball bounces on the top of the backboard and rolls or bounces off the front of the backboard, its still in play. At least that's what I always thought.

That is correct, it just cannot touch any supporting structure. I believe there is a rail going cross ways on that backboard but after the replay it clearly did not touch that.
