Best wishes for a healthy and happy retirement, Coach, and thank you for your time at Rutgers!

Here's hoping we open up the checkbook to ensure a high-quality replacement. Penny wise = pound foolish, we need talent and continuity on offense.

It's time for the school to step up and PAY UP. Spend a little extra and get a real damn OC that will stick around awhile... time to stop the BS. If this next hire isn't in the $800k range this will be ridiculous! PS: Hire a QB Coach too...

You know if we do happen to go the less expensive route say in the same 600 range which might get us a Brian Wright from a Toledo, I wouldn't mind seeing a co-OC like Graham Harrell who is the North Texas OC get hired. Even a 300K salary would likely be a bump and definitely a good career move even if not a big bump in salary. Then you'd have someone to takeover too should a guy like Wright leave. Like I mentioned above those TT guys (ex coaches/players) under Leach usually know offense.

that does nothing for recruiting. Ash needs a accomplished ex coach or power five OC, a name ,or someone Jersey connected to also help recruiting as the OC.

Wishing Coach Kill the best of luck and a future that he can enjoy without the health issues that forced him to leave Minnesota and Rutgers.
Maybe if he is healthy enough and wants to stay close to college football, a position like he had at KSU and a area he's completely comfortable in ( Midwest or maybe Jersey ) might fill that desire without causing health problems.
But for now hope Mr Kill starts enjoying his retirement and gets on the healthy track.

Having a strong offense does nothing for recruiting? I have no qualms hiring a Mazzone, Helfrich and names like them. I've brought them up before most here. But I think a Wright is solid name too and the big names it's a little harder to reel them in even with money. They may not want to come and others may offer them even more. Find guys who can create productive offenses that will help recruiting.

Wright has produced strong offenses at Toledo the last two years (#7 YPG, #11 PPG this year and #7 YPG, #19 PPG last year). Graham Harell has been the OC at North Texas the last two years and had a huge jump from the 100s in YPG/PPG categories in his first year to #24 and #20 this year. I wouldn't want Harrel as a sole OC but as co-OC picking up experience and then taking over in the future should it be necessary doesn't seem like a bad idea.

It's just another avenue and another way to possibly skin the cat. Say we offer 800K but no one comes then what? Well maybe you offer 500K or so to Wright who makes mid 100s right now and say 300K to Harrell who makes 200K right now. You've got one good offensive mind an another good up and comer with a good background to takeover should we lose another OC. It's continuity from within the staff as opposed to having to start over completely with a new search.

I'm looking at all possibilities and avenues that could work not just the most obvious one and one which you might have less control over making materialize when you're fishing for bigger names.

It was definitely worth a shot for all involved but I am glad he is focusing on more important things. Thank you Coach Kill for all that you put into RU this year.

I really liked what I saw and heard from Kill. He seems like a real class act and a great football coach. It is really sad that his health has prevented him from doing what he loves. I wish him the best.
Agree 100%. Seemed to really care for the players and bonded well with them. I'm sure Ash learned plenty about the right way to build a program. Just because of that, his time here could prove to be invaluable.

Can't we find a PR role for him? He was good in front of the Mic.

Good luck.

Next? (Spinal Tap's Marshall amps were unique and volume went to 11. Maybe 11 is the lucky number.

Is that something you heard? Or just your gut feel? I like Brian Wright and think he's a solid option but a Mazzone or Helfrich who would likely be getting salary from previous jobs at least for a year or two don't seem unrealistic if they want to come here.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Sterlin Gilbert Strong's OC at USF and was with him his last year at Texas could also be a solid option if you're looking at the lower levels.

If Graham Harrell the North Texas OC was a little seasoned he might have been nice option too. His experience now is better than DM's when we hired him but not enough for me yet. Those TT guys under Leach (ex players, coaches) usually seem to know offense from Kingsbury, Briles, Dykes, Cumbie, Holgorsen, Riley, etc...
I don't know Wright but I think that't the profile of a guy that they should go after.
I do know Longo. Great, successful guy. Admired in NJ. His next stop is HC, not OC at RU, I'm sad to say.

I hope we can hire a good OC here at Seton Hall...that’s right ...here at Seton Hall because Hobbs does not know about football or care about it. He’s clueless on football.

Longo makes what Kill made, $600k (at least according to the other article from Dunleavy) and Mazzone made $815k at TA&M, but he's not making anything atm, lol.
Hopefully, Pat can pry the pocketbook open a little further, 800k could get either one. Or is that wishful thinking on my part?
Wishful thinking. Why in the world would either come to Rutgers? With many other job openings why would an experienced OC want to walk into the cluster that is the Rutgers offense? Money is nice but if it delays your ultimate goal of being a head coach then why risk it? I think it probably going to be P5 position coach or a OC from a g5 school who are looking for their break.

I don’t know why anyone is surprised by this. I said it when he was hired he wouldn’t last more than a year. I am guessing he made decision and didn’t consult with his doctors. I don’t know a doctor out there who would recommend him going back to the high stress of coaching given his history.

How do you hire someone who wants to be here long term? Do you ask them, "So, Mr. Candidate, where do you see yourself 14 months from now? Do you expect to lead the Knights offense or do you expect to be running after the next offer?"
I agree with you, wishful thinking on my part
But, you must agree, a new OQ every year has to take a toll on recruiting and everyone involved in the offensive side, no?

No doubt my friend. I’m afraid this my come to define CA’s tenure as HC. If he successfully hires and retains an OC, he may find enough success to bide him some time to right the ship. If not, the offense will continue to flounder and CA will not make it past 5 years.

As much as I want to disagree with you, you may be right.
However, for Longo, perhaps he has a burning desire to return to New Jersey and or a hankering for a pork roll and cheese sandwich.
For Mazzone, he is 60. He started at Colorado State in 1982 as QB coach, and his first gig as OC was at Ole Miss in 1995. Maybe he does not want to be an OC. Also seems his son was part of a package deal at A&M. Maybe if RU takes him and his son, he could set his son up for a future job?

Mazzone needs a job. He coached at the Jets and knows NJ. Why not?

I don't think Mazzone is out of the question if we can pay in the vicinity of 800K. I have mentioned his son Taylor too who was qb coach with him at UCLA and then took a demotion to quality control to go with him to A&M. I mentioned you could offer the son too and maybe you get Mazzone and he might stick around as well if you have both of them. If Taylor is any good he can takeover down the line. The only thing is there could be other competition for him but it doesn't mean he's not a realistic option if we can pay a salary in that vicinity.
