Jay is crying about players not getting paid as the NCAA makes millions. Does Jay not make a hefty salary off these kids also?

The question needs to be asked. The NCAA, the universities, and the coaches are making millions off these kids. I would set aside money for kids that graduate (anyone who signs a makes millions in professional leagues would not be eligible).

Unless you work some deal where players alone can make money off their image (which I would be in support of), I just don't see how this is feasible without eliminating tons of sports at the collegiate level (and it'll affect more men's sports than women's sports due to Title IX).

So who gets paid? Every athlete (male and female) or just the ones in revenue producing sports?

Most colleges only make money in football and men's basketball...and not all of them are profitable.

I never hear Bilas talk about NCAA women getting paid....never

What you do for one, must be done for all.....or lawsuits galore

So how much does he want to pay them? It's such a poorly thought out position.

Kids don't have to sign up for a free education. Let them make an amateur league, promote themselves all they want, get all the endorsements they want, and go to the league after one year.

The popularity of college basketball doesn't depend on a dozen guys.

Jay is about the free market, if you deserve it, you get it. Free tuition means nothing to these one and dones, so hence the crying

Seems pretty simple to give Nova players a cut of championship t shirt sales.

Your fifty hypothetical problems don't keep it from being the right thing to do.

They manage to organize a 68 team tournament in different time zones across the country and we never miss a second of the action.

They review the eligibility of every player that steps on any field of play.

They partner with several hundred schools across dozens of sports to schedule facilities for games, concerts, etc to avoid overlap and conflicts.

They can figure this out if they want to. "But it's hard" has never been a reason not to do anything.

You pay kids by a portion of their jersey sales . End thread. Oh /

So do they have to pay the University back a portion of their scholarship?

How many of you own jerseys of players from other teams? You think this is all about the player and not the university? I say let the players sell whatever jerseys they want only without any school logos or colors.

The education is not free , it’s compensation for playing the sport. You quit the team and the scholly is gone, thus it’s not free.
I find it interesting that everyone is for free market except when it comes to a certain demographic profiting of of the free market. College golf, tennis, baseball , etc.... can get paid and not have to pay everyone else, but not basketball and football, different demographic, and it’s obvious.

I think he fundamentally believes the grand scale arguments he makes and views himself as an important voice that has an obligation to use his platform.

Now, the issue of how important he truly is is another story. But I do think his intentions are sincere.

You mean like how fighting is "part of it" when it comes to hockey or NASCAR or baseball but not anywhere else?

1. Pay all athletes a stipend. It should be tied to revenue generation but it doesn’t have to in order for title xi
2. Allow players to take endorsement deals, sign autographs, etc
3. Allow all athletes to take out loans with a cap TBD. Like 100k

Problem solved

His defense of UNCs cheating and even Pitino makes me question much of his authenticity surrounding his viewpoints.

They're consistent with his overall theme of NCAA incompetence and going against them at every turn.

He does some mental gymnastics to get there, but I respect the dedication.

The athletes do get paid a stipend. At all the power 5 schools anyway.

I think this is what Bills means. Let them make money off their image, allow them to sell autographs, give them a percentage of merchandise sales, that sort of thing.

The getting paid thing is silly.

It wouldn't fix much of anything.

Let's say they decide to give every football and basketball player $100,000 a year. The good players would be pissed because they would make the same amount as a player who never gets off the bench.

And it still wouldn't stop them from taking money from an agent. It wouldn't stop them from leaving after one year. It wouldn't change anything except bankrupt the non revenue sports, and what about the women? You don't think they would be protesting and raising hell?

It's just stupid.

Why doesn't Bilas give his $3 million dollar salary to the Duke players.

Disappointed Bilas has jumped on the pay the players bandwagon. Not feasible.

Not a damn thing wrong with what he said. Obviously the NCAA will never figure it out. Some of you will ***** about anything. A N Y T H I N G.

My question is if you pay basketball players what makes other athletes not eligible for the same benefits. I wouldn't think there is enough money to go around.

It’s simple. Pay the players based on a percentage their sport made their respective university. That’d fix title IX issues

I don't listen to anything Bilas has to say. It is just another big mouth like Dukie V always spouting off something. Ignore them, your life will be better for it.

And if thier particular sport lost money, then they have to pay to play.

Title lX will fight this to hell and back
Jay wants a free market system, go figure.
I completely agree with this. I haven’t heard one single person say how this could be done because it can’t. Just a bunch of blanket statements of how players should be paid. Title 9 will not let this happen, & it would force schools to eliminate sports that aren’t bringing in the money. So the star basketball player should get money, but not some nobody swimmer? Good luck paying some & not others. This isn’t going to happen, so bilas can quit crying about it.

yeah if you just say this percentage of sales from xyz fixes the title 9 cause everyone would get the same percentage. but I am more of a fan of the making money on image, letting them sell autographs in the off season and doing endorsements in the off season (like tv and print ads) this takes the burden off of appeasing title ix. I like the stipend cause as I have said many times on here as a TA i got tuition paid and like a 500 dollar stipend every 2 weeks for 20 hours of work a week in grad school from UK, and I am sure there were other universities that gave out larger stipends and some that gave out less, it was all up to the departments budget. but it is a down right silly rule that these guys cant make money in the off season on their image, I mean what if someone gets a job in the summer is that against the rules?
