When and if he feels ready . He is doing light work on his own but hasn't started practicing yet.

His foot has not been tested to see how it will respond to basketball related movements. He needs to run, jump, cut, and push off at game speed. After exposure to this type of workload, then they can see how his foot does.
At this time, Vanderbilt is only doing stationary shooting and ball handling. Hopefully he's healed enough to start putting weight on his foot. Otherwise, his return may be questionable.

Has there been any word on when he might be ready to play?
We know that JV is working out on his own, not yet with the team. We know that JV could have opted for surgery, but decided to see if he can get ready to play this winter. Those are the signals from JV. Since he isn't actually working out with the team yet, he won't be playing anytime soon. But if you look at the way Calipari is managing his current recruiting class, there is a hint that he expects JV back next year. Quickley is an elite point. From what I gather of KJ and TH, both expect to play the 2 position. I don't remember the link, but more than once I have seen KJ refer to himself as a guard, and he is the same size as Diallo. The only forward being recruited is Zion Williamson, a unique talent who would be recruited by Calipari no matter who else is on our roster. Just a guess, but I suspect JV ultimately opts for surgery this winter or spring and then plays at UK next year.

My guess is he will start getting some minutes around the beginning of SEC play. He hasn't practiced but it's not like he's just been sitting in his dorm room twiddling his thumbs during practice. He's still getting individual work done as well. If he hasn't started practice by the middle of December I might think otherwise.

He's not going to dramatically change the team but I don't think it's unreasonable to think he has the ability to play important minutes and/or can contribute to a deep run in March.

If you followed Vanderbilt last year in his senior year he will be an outstanding addition to this lineup. In the Nike Hoops Summit and Jordan Classic he had great games in both in approx. 20 minutes of playing he scored 20 points in both games and had double-digit in rebounds in both games. He would probably be starting right now in place of Washington if we had Vanderbilt right now. That would be an outstanding starting five with Green, Diallo, Vanderbilt, Knox, and Richards and bring off the bench PJ, Gabriel or SKJ, and Alexander. Vanderbilt will be an outstanding addition to this team if we can get him back healthy and he stays healthy all season. Then Baker back in Mid-January with his 42% shooting from 3 would be another huge addition. We will have to wait and see with Vanderbilt because I am sure Cal will have him practice with the team for 2-3 weeks solid before letting him play so it will be around SEC schedule if he would start practicing soon with the team.

JV hasn't practiced with the team yet, so he won't be ready for the beginning of SEC play. Calipari hasn't said much about it, but he did say recently that JV is making the decision to work out on his own. Knowing the way Calipari uses subtle public remarks to motivate players at times, I think Calipari is saying JV is near the fish or cut bait deadline for this season. My thought is that JV won't play this year, and will have to come back to play here next season if he plans to be drafted.

I don't see Vanderbilt coming back this season, he should of set out last year and got his injuries better, but he is too prideful for that. Hopefully he does not rush back too quick and make it worse than what it needs to be. His original break in his sophomore year of high school was about the same thing that happened to Patrick Patterson his freshman year at Kentucky. Jarred never did have surgery or anything, so i would say that is the same injury that keeps nagging him..

If he started practice next week he'd be ready for around SEC play. It's all speculation at this point.

I doubt JV can get ready for the start of the SEC season. That may be speculation, but the rest of the team has been playing together since October. When Calipari made a public comment to the media about JV choosing to work out on his own, I placed significance on that. He rarely discusses specific players by name unless he is passing out compliments or conveying a coded warning.
