Hell, we were 20-11 and 4th in the SEC with an 11-7 record. If that's underachieving what does that say about Jans' records?
It doesn't say anything about Jans' records because he didn't coach that team. That's the way coaching works. If Ben Howland is head coach fo a team, that means by definition Jans wasn't head coach of that team. But Howland had put together a talented team. Reggie Perrie (drafted and at least had a cup of coffee in the pros; not sure he ever made a full season), Iverson Molinar (undrafted but at least signed), DJ Stewart (another undrafted player that at least signed; unbelievable we had two players on that team leave with eligibility remaining to go undrafted), Robert Woodard (drafted 40th), Tolu Smith (a cup of coffee with the Pistons) and then good role players like Nick WEatherspoon and Tyson Carter. Granted no superstarts on that team, but I don't know how many teams we've had with 5 people that were good enough to even get a look by NBA teams.

But unless all the projections at the time were wrong, we still ended the season on the outside looking in and would have needed to make noise in the SEC tournament to get in.

Wish I could get paid $4.2 MIL per year to blow my job
I understand the frustration, but man we haven’t won an NCAA tournament game in almost 2 decades. 2008, 14 years before he got here. The only SEC team with a longer drought is Georgia.

Making the tournament 3 out of 4 years is great here. He will win one eventually. I bet he’ll get us to the sweet 16 at some point. We need to hang on to him for a long time.

On one hand I get the frustration. But on the other hand - we’ve been to the NCAA tourney 14 times ever as a program. Jans has taken us to 21% of those appearances in just 4 years. The dude is batting 75% on the tourney since he was hired.

He blew some evaluations last year, but so did a lot of coaches. The landscape changes every day in this new 17ed up system and he got burned last year. Since so many on this board are obsessed with OM - thier coach is considered one of the top coaches in the game and he totally blew his evals last year too.
I’m still amazed at how big of a deal some of our fans make of just getting into the freaking tourney. So his first year State finished 68th. But o boy they made the play in round. In years 2 and 3, bounced in the first round by a lower seed in one.

The most successful basketball coach for Mississippi State WAS and Still IS Rick Stansbury. Guy would have stayed here a lifetime if nothing off because he panicked and signed Renardo Sidney. The thing is, when Sidney was in high school he was a “Can’t Miss”. But…. He couldn’t control his weight and stay in shape. Stansbury should have stayed away but thought he could help the kid. Nobody could. He ate himself out of an NBA future!

The question that seldom gets asked when folks complain about a coach is who can we realistically get that is better? Get rid of Jans and be ready for another Rick Ray level hire.

The answer to "the question that seldom gets asked when folks complain" is that's what Selmon gets paid $1.25 MIL / year for. In addition he gets a yearly $25,000 salary increase and a $100,000 retention bonus starting this year. If Selmon hires a Rick Ray level hire (all time head coaching record of 88-164 .349 winning %), Selmon can go on the block too

And at least 1 of those tournament appearances was a play in game he lost. Not the real tournament. Or at the very least a bid not available to previous coaches.
We were an 11 seed right? Yea, I count that. Maybe a different discussion if it was a 16 play in. 11 seed was specifically designed to weed-out State.

We don’t know who might be interested. But sure. If we fire a guy making $4.4 million and try to hire a guy for $1 million, then yes here comes Rick Ray.

The NCAA tourney is typically the metric used to judge the success of a team’s season. By pretty much everyone, not just fans. And I would argue that going to the tourney his first year was a pretty big deal considering that we had only been one other time (2019) since Stan’s’ last trip in 2009. So only the second trip in 15 long, mostly miserable years…

Using that metric also highlights your statement about Stans being the best coach in our history considering that he was involved in 9 of our 14 ever appearances (as asst and HC).

Well it worked.
In Jans defense, against Pitt in the play in game, he drew up a great inbounds play in the last couple of seconds that got Moore a wide azz open 3 from the right corner for the win and he just missed it. And I thought jefferies was fouled on the put back as well.

A lot of you have the "well, it's po ol' Mittittippi Tate. We happy just making muh tourney" syndrome. Jans is getting a Top 20 salary at 4.4M and a Top 25 roster. He is being given what he needs to produce. Has he produced at a Top 20 rate which is the same as his pay? Heck no. Not even close. We are paying 4.4M for an average 7-11 SEC record. Y'all can enjoy that all you want. I want him to win. I'm pulling for him, but another crap season after this portal bomb, and it might be time to pull the plug, especially if he doesn't like it here and has/is trying to get out(which I don't know if that's true or not but rumors say so).

it would be different if we paid him table scraps and wouldn't pony up for a roster, but he's being paid and has been given the resources. I'm usually not a "fire the coach" person, but next year is year five, and if we go backwards again Jans can go.

If you still have Internet access, post the location where Coach Jans has you imprisoned. We'll send law enforcement...

and there goes Zac Salmon. Is he really that dumb? If so then he, like Jans, is overpaid for the results they produce
