Franklin has taken them to 10 wins in 3 of the last 4 seasons. Idk why his seat would be hot. Plus, it’s a weird year.

Franklin's taking a beating over the empty-net TD blunder at Indiana. But I don't see that rising to the level of a hot seat.

I don't think this question is too far off base.

Penn State is easily the second most talented team in the second-best conference in college football and there's a chance they go 5-3, 4-4, or 3-5 this year....there's a chance of a lot of things, but it's not crazy to look at their schedule and see a 1-5 start.

Is that good enough for a coach in his 7th year at Penn State?

If by "is his seat getting a little toasty" you meant "are there a bunch of crazy people on social media" then yes, definitely.

I had heard his seat was a bit warm last year. I was surprised, but was told people didn’t like his in-game coaching. Can’t imagine those people were thrilled about the Indiana game. But I don’t know if it’s legit or just a few crazies.

took over a blue blood program that was coming off near death penalty type NCAA sanctions and had them top ten in year 3 - and has been in the top 10 3 of his 6 total seasons

so it shows what a blue blood can accomplish with the right hire

on the other hand - you don't want things to get too comfy or before you know it you have "case for optimism" posts after losing a “competition” by pertinear 6 touchdowns in year 3

slippery slope

It just shows the difference when you get to take over after a genius like Bill O'Brien rights the ship as opposed to a program killer like Mike Riley.

*important disclaimer when reading the above post, as the "near death penalty type NCAA sanctions" @jlb321 is referring to occurred only on paper*

The NCAA later rescinded many of the sanctions against Penn State. On September 24, 2013, the NCAA announced that Penn State's scholarships would be gradually restored until the number of scholarships reached the normal 85 for the 2016–17 year, the first year after Penn State's postseason ban.

A year later, on September 8, 2014, the NCAA announced that Penn State would be eligible for the 2014 postseason and all scholarships would be restored in 2015.

Several months later, on January 16, 2015, the NCAA reinstated Paterno and Bradley's wins.

in 2015 they could offer full scholarships - it took years to get a complete roster

2010 - 19 scholarships
2011 - 16
2012 - 19
2013 - 16
2014 - 19

amazingly they were able to maintain winning records throughout the entire time - despite 3 head coaches and having to recruit in the face of a pedophilia scandal when most of the country felt the program should have been dissolved

it shows the difference between a blue blood in terms of past and present and blue blood in past only

This I agree with. The term "blue blood" used in reference to Nebraska is a distraction from reality.

I don't think any coach's seat should be hot in CFB this season. Too awkward of a year hell bent on being as far from "normal" as can be

LOL you're such a clown. Why are you too scared to tell us what team you follow when you're not trolling? I gotta hand it to you though, you're one of the more devoted trolls I've seen.

Penn State is NOT the second most talented team in the BIG 10 East. Franklin recruits (including negative recruiting ) but is NOT a good game day coach. He would make a wonderful used car salesman.

I live in PA and I am surrounded by Penn State fans. So I have a good sense of the mood here towards Franklin. The short take is that he is definitely not on a hot seat. Penn State does not want to fall into the revolving door of coaches mentality. Plus, he is a native son. Fans out here kind of feel sorry for him right now. He has two kids who have sickle cell anemia and he has had to be very, very cautious this year with regard to Covid and, therefore, by his own admission, has not been as present emotionally to the team this year as he should be. But his players love the guy and most fans here are willing to just let this year be a Mulligan.

Penn State fans have any thoughts?
Franklin isn’t on the hot seat despite game day gaffes. He has been known for mismanaging games, especially with respect to the clock. The Indiana game was about as bad as he has been with it.

That being said, he usually recruits enough talent to overcome most of the game day screw ups. Franklin recruits PA, NJ, MD, VA, and DC well, which is where PSU gets most of its talent. It is also one of the areas of the country with the most high school football talent. It’ll be interesting to see if Schiano at Rutgers or Locksley at Maryland can start winning recruiting battles.

Also, most PSU fans have witnessed other historically good programs (Nebraska, Texas, Florida State, USC, Tennessee, etc.) think they could do better and fire a coach. It usually doesn’t end well. PA isn’t the recruiting hotbed it was during most of Paterno’s era, where he could put together a national championship roster without getting on a plane. You need a guy, like Franklin, who can go to a place like Florida and land a few recruits.

Excited about the game today!

Frost has landed plenty of recruits from Florida.

I know Frost is drawing a lot of heat right from Nebraska fans, but it is just a matter of time before he turns it around. Franklin was on the hot seat before Joe Moorehead became his OC. In 2016 PSU lost two early games (close one to Pitt and a blowout in Ann Arbor). It took an OT win over Minnesota, a blocked fg against OSU, and an OSU win over Michigan for PSU to get to the BIG title game. Point being it takes time for a new coach and some things need to fall into the right place.

Going to give him some props.

#69 that hurt Thomas with the dirty play diving on him and then immediately got the unsportsmanlike the next play or so laying on Miller, never saw the field again the rest of the game.

I'm sure it was punishment for the flag instead of the dirty play, but to disappear your starting RG when you're down that much and stick with it is commendable.
