Jalen's D on Hepburn

I don't recall seeing a thread on this. There has rightly been a lot of praise for Caleb's defense, but against Wisconsin this weekend Jalen also came in and did a great job against Hepburn. Hepburn was really hurting us in the first half, but Jalen basically took him out of the game. I think Hepburn had only one bucket in the second half and I'm pretty sure that came with Jalen on the bench. I'm really looking forward to watching Jalen's continued growth!

When Jalen finally got some floor time in our 7th game of the season, I posted on this board that I thought it would be one of Pike’s biggest regrets, holding him out of those first 6 games.

We’ll never know for sure, but his defense alone could have made the difference in our losses to UMass and Lafayette. If so, we’d be in everyone’s bracket right now.

We weren’t scoring anyway in the Lafayette game so couldn’t have hurt.

Jalen plays great on ball defense.

But his unwillingness to even attempt to play offense is really bad

Miller can shut down Johnson tomorrow too. He has been hot lately and likely gets the Caleb treatment, but Miller will prob see some minutes on him as well

I think his ball handling skills and distribution look good and are promising going forward. He hasn't shot much, but he's a freshman. Lately, Pike's been using him on offense/defense switches with Paul late in games

Miller needs to be out there when we have at least two scoring options on the court with him. Some of the combinations when he is on the court, give us almost no chance of scoring.

I also don’t understand why we stick him in the corner on offense. A smart team would have the man guarding him in the paint and just dare him to shoot from there. I wouldn’t guard him until he made one, but he won’t even attempt it.

Miller was the turning point in making that Wisconsin game close.

He was in Hepburns face every possession.

The combination of him and Caleb gave us sensational defense but unfortunately almost nothing in offense leaving no margin for error. If we make a few more free throws or hit another three that game was ours.

One thing I've loved about him is his ability to deny his man the ball. Stopping a point guard from receiving a pass, and keeping the ball in the hands of guys with a worse assist/turnover ratio can be hugely disruptive.

I know the B1G doesn't always win the hype of other leagues when it comes to basketball recruiting, but Hepburn was a very solid pickup out of Nebraska for Wisconsin. I think McGowens will win the frosh of the year, but I could have argued for Branham out of Ohio State.

Hepburn finished in the Top 150 for the 2021 recruiting cycle and asked to play the 5th role or option with Davison and Davis, Wahl etc.

He has been doing the offense defense switch because Paul has had 4 fouls in both games he is not doing a straight up offense defense switch

I really hope Jalen develops some offense. As good as he is on D he hurts us on O.

I appreciate that, but in that situation it is Jalen that is coming in for Paul on the offense/defense switch

Um his ball handling has been okay but he's rarely that pressured.

His passing is nothing special at this point, heck he tried to pass and got called for a charge

Remember when Paul wouldn’t shoot and was hurting us on offense. Same with Jalen He was a scorer in high school, just has to be encouraged to take a few shots so opponents can’t ignore him. We may be surprised that he starts making some and grows from there.

What kind of a scorer was he in HS? I'm guessing exclusively dribble/drive and transition?

In High school averaged 15 points a game , 10 assists and 5 rebounds. Unleash him and let him score.
