the sanctions thing. As Coach pointed out a couple of days ago- we are a top 30 job right now. Now, I understand that we probably weren't in 2003, but the fact is we are still a SEC school. We could have gotten better than what we ended up with. I don't necessarily buy the AA coach theory either. The fact is we got Croom because LT was cheap. Our violations were all ticky tack BS and I guarantee you that if Kentucky didn't get the death penalty, neither would we. LT didn't want to deal with agents and wanted someone who would take very little money. I do think Croom's race played a part in it, but let's try to think like LT for a second. How's a cheap way to get people interested in MSU football when things look bleak? Advertise? Hire a great coach? OR how about hire someone that will attract a lot of media attention no matter what. If it works out great, if not we're MSU and we're in the black.

LT also should have had the balls to tell Jackie to leave. JWS is like any other coach- he thinks he can turn it around even though things are horribly out of control. He is a competitor. He is not programmed to step away. It is the responsilbility of the AD to MAKE him step away. As far as Ole Miss and the NCAA, all I think he would have had to do is tell Khayat to <17> off and that the day we get our letter of inquiry, we're turning them in. And it would have worked to because everyone is doing SOMETHING wrong.

So, blame LT.

when instead of talking about sports you were saying you thought poor and old people should just die when they get sick and we should get rid of medicare.

The Ramada Inn incident wasn't ticky tack BS. That was a major violation and a clear lack of institutional control. We wouldn't have gotten the death penalty, but we'd have gotten worse than we did if we hadn't hired an AA coach. There's no question about it.

I agree. Sherrill shouldn't have been given the chance to coach our team in 2003.

Again I agree. It's like Mutually Assured Destruction from the Cold War. We should have hired our own private detectives to dig up everything possible on Mississippi after they turned us in. Instead, we just rolled over and took it in the ***.

Let's look closer at Sherrill.

1991 and 1992 were great - he won with Felker's players, to his credit.

1993 - ******, but gets a pass as he began building the team his way.

1994 - Very good team.

1995 & 1996 - ******. Probably saved his job by beating Bama and OM after starting 3-6 in '96.

1997 - good team, but no bowl. In fairness, would've had a bowl bid 99% of the time. Choked away a trip to Atlanta however. (7-2 and lost the last 2)

1998 and 1999 - the pinnacle. One trip to Atlanta and 7 minutes shy of an SEC title, possibly screwed out of another trip in '99 (Alabama game). 8-0 start in '99 was amazing. (Although, we pulled quite a few games out of our hind end, much like the '07 team did.)

2000 - Choke job again (7-2, lost the last 2). Probably his best team, which is the sad thing about it. Injuries did play a part down the stretch.

2001 - Terrible recruiting decisions lead to impending disaster. The 52-0 debacle in Gainesville set in motion a series of events which has led to the crap we are watching now.

Just sayin'. He brought a lot of good, but a lot of bad too, including 2 probations, and the hell of 2001-2003, which led to the hiring of the Slytanic.

....but to say that we were an unattractive destination at that point in our history is a huge understatement.
Our violations were all ticky tack BS and I guarantee you that if Kentucky didn't get the death penalty, neither would we.
But again, nobody knew what we were getting. We had no idea of our violations at the time. We were fixing to pay for Jackie Sherrill who has about as bad of a reputation in college football as anybody. The NCAA had an agenda to get him and were fixing to pay the price. It ended up being not much, but that was unknown at the time. And I am not saying some back room deal was struck, but I guarantee you that Templeton received alot of pressure from outside sources that wasn't financial. And I'm not so much to think it was a terrible hire at the time for where we were. And despite the laziness charge, there were two candidates on the table - Croom and Fisher. Saying that there were oodles of other coaches that would've taken the job is pure conjecture and probably false. Look at OM in 2004. They weren't on probation, and after an extensive search, then ended up with a position coach. Nobody can accuse them of not doing a search because it was very public.

I would be surprised if anything as explicit as a back-room deal was done where if we hired a black coach, we'd get weaker sanctions. But it didn't take a genius to look at the political situation at the time and know that we were going to get a much better deal from the NCAA if we hired a black coach.

....which is why I am not big on griping about the actual hire. We can debate all day whose fault it was to get into the position that we were in in 2003. We can also debate whose fault it is regarding the on the field results since the hire. But as far as the actual hire goes, at that point in time, I think in many ways, we did what we felt we had to do.
