I think this is a public 247 story, so going ahead to post it here: USC grad transfer QB Jack Sears is reportedly on campus today per 247 ( https://247sports.com/college/north...k-Jack-Sears-visiting-Northwestern-144509560/ ).

Interesting news in light of the Peyton Ramsey rumor. Sears would also have two years of eligibility, but can play right away as a grad transfer. The plot thickens...

Kid is a legitimate athlete who seems like a great fit for what Bajakian wants out of his QBs:

Maybe there is a new urgency in bringing in potential transfers once Coach Jake saw the NU QB's in Spring camp?

All three practices? I'm sure the film of last season showed him plenty.

Meh... more likely just took a little time after the "traditional" signing period both for teams to figure out their real needs and grad transfers to figure out where they might fit.

He came out of spring ball as their 4th string quarterback. Not necessarily a reflection on him but certainly speaks highly of the USC quarterback depth.

The speculation is that he was downgraded to 4th string because it was pretty certain he would enter the portal. He started only one game for USC in which he did well but they lost. Sounds like the typical highly rated quarterback recruited to an elite school that faces tough competition. Hunter Johnson redux or Joe Burroughs? Unlikely a sure bet but has two years remaining. Peyton Ramsey more of a sure thing but only has one year left.

Sears was really highly rated coming out of HS.
But Ramsey has played pretty well with more college experience.

Was at a Duke (bball) game last night and coincidentally this Jack Sears story popped into my feed. I showed it to my Duke friend and he was like "oh, yeah...Jack Sears". I was surprised he knew of him - so apparently he committed to Duke back in the day and had everybody here fired up. Then last minute he flipped his verbal to USC to be closer to home. Hard to say (from a career standpoint) what would have best...had he come to Duke he would have competed for playing time with Daniel Jones. But at USC it sounds like he had a hard time breaking through on the depth chart...

Will Whittaker switch back to sb/te if we get either of these two fellows? It might be crazy, but HJ is a good athlete...could he pull a Colter and line up as a wr??

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Whittaker move back to SB and/or Smith leave as a grad transfer if we took one or both of these guys.

Hunter is a good athlete, but not quite that good.

Hunter is a good athlete, but not quite that good.

Also Hunter has a relatively slight frame and seems to injury-prone, but I'm sure that's also related to getting hit by 300 pound linemen charging full speed untouched into the backfield.

Does all this suggest that Hunter's star has faded already? There were a number of understandable reasons for last season's debacle, he's now acclimated to Northwestern, has two seasons of eligibility remaining and is widely thought to have a ton of talent. A grad transfer isn't going to come here to back someone up. Has it already become apparent that HJ's skill set isn't an ideal fit for what Bajakian wants to do?

Just get the best players you can.

I, for one, would be thrilled to have two of the Top 5 rated QBs in the 2017 class on NU’s roster. Perhaps having a guy like Sears in the QB room would light a fire under Hunter, who knows?

No so much a response to you as to all of those who have somewhat said this in this thread and others. Personally, I see it as simply as: Fitz unequivocally vowed that what happened last year wouldn't happen to him ever again. He vowed to fix it and he's going to do everything in his power to do so. He already fired his OC and QB coach of a decade. Getting even more talent in to the QB room ASAP is the next step.

On a larger scale, it is the job of the coaches to recruit over every single player we have on the roster year after year. It is the job of the player to not let that happen by continuing to improve, perform, execute, etc. Fitz is doing his job here and it's on the players in that room to do theirs. All of these guys will be on even footing with a new coach, new system, etc., so let the best man win.

Fly, meet sledgehammer. I support this. I tell my people that my boss, our COO expects us to grab a problem by the throat and pound the **** out of it until it is a bloody pulp.

Go Fitz.
