I agree with part of your first paragraph. I do think Wheeler should probably have more of a green light than Oscar, but he only needs to take open 3's.

I also agree he tend to get himself to deep in the paint without a plan. And I do think we should run the lob more, particularly for Collins, Toppin, Ware and even Livingston and Wallace. That used to be a staple of our offense and we hardly run it anymore.

We have to allow Toppin and Livingston to play some of the perimeter because of how offense has evolved in recent years. Both of them are capable shooters, even though they haven't put up numbers to prove it so far this season. However, if they can get going from there, we will get really dangerous as a team.

We need players that aren't hesitant to let it fly though. Frederick is bad about passing up shots.
The thing is Wheeler is AWAYS open for 3's by smart coaches because that's a great way for them to win the game.

He honestly has the be the only person living that can’t see what his best lineup is. I wonder if the assistants ever say anything to him?
And why does he feel the need to tinker with lineups when he won’t play over 7 guys in March?
I could understand tinkering if you wanted to play 10 or 11 guys, press the entire game, and go full speed.

We look like garbage because he is an inept coach.
Probably why we've seen Chin (multiple times) looking like he's ready to slap the F out of him... [laughing]

Maybe he said it maybe not; but I'll wait to see if he actually does it.

What more would he need to see? How much more comfortable does he want Wallace to get? If he really thinks this, I see no value in waiting.

Same exact scenario as last season, yet we withered away when it was obvious tyty should've been on point.

Wheeler is a unique talent but he can't be the guy in most situations and it's compounded by the fact we have the player of the year in the post clogging the lane
I mean, this is the same coach that is standing on the sidelines watching Collins stand there and do nothing but pee down his leg, but he keeps sending him out there.

He used to yank guys out for missing 1 defensive assignment, but he stood there and watched Collins lose Joey Hauser every time down the court. JH was, by far, the slowest guy on the court. What a joke.

Billy R Sports had Pilgrim on The Leach Report this morning and he asked him point blank about the Wallace and Wheeler PG situation...

Pilgrim told BRS that a little birdie has told him that as the season progresses and Cal sees Wallace become more comfortable that he is going to take over the PG spot from Wheeler. He was told that Cal is very intrigued by Wallace with CJ and Reeves. Essentially buying some time right now and tinkering with lineups.

Anyhow, just thought I'd share. Don't shoot the messenger!
I won't believe it's even remotely possible until it actually happens and we see it w/ our own eyes. Cal is Cal.

That should be immediate grounds for dismissal. Thatts again ti a coach saying “I won’t make changes just to win”. Newsflash. THATS YOUR DAMN JOB
Now, now bbn, you can't go saying that, it hurts @JonathanW 's feelings when people do that. We're supposed to "wait until the season is over" to say things like that.

He still does it just to some players. He has no problem watching Collins float around the perimeter setting weak screens or watching ware get dominated in a variety of ways.

Yet when onyenso gives up the least thing he's immediately out

Exactly right.
There's also Livingston and Thiero. Livingston is better than Collins already and he has more potential, but one mistake and he's on the bench.
I think Thiero made a mistake back in HS and is going to pay for that all year.

Probably because I’m practice he’s used to getting that pass and shooting like that. In drills that’s about the kind of feed they get. Makes sense to try and get him looks like that.
If Oscar is double teamed and can't get an open look or on the offensive rebound when he's surrounded it's Wheeler's man that is most likely there leaving him open. I just noticed it the first time thinking Oscar sure doesn't like to give up the ball in that situation after a rebound. But the kickout and 3 looked great. Noticed it 2 times after that.

You aren't very familiar with basketball, are you?

What does Reeves and Frederick shooting 40% (FYI, Frederick is slightly above Wheeler at this point % wise) matter? Do they all have to shoot the same?

How does Wheeler playing prevent Oscar from shooting 3's?

Why would we tell Toppin not to shoot good 3 pt shots?

Probably because Collins has shown the ability to hit them when he is on, and doing so would open the floor up more for other players. Would you oppose he tell Collins to shrink the floor? I'm sure you'll say something stupid or create a poorly made meme to suggest Cal shouldn't play Collins, but again, that will only further demonstrate your ignorance of basketball.

Well, considering Reeves isn't a pg, doesn't have the greatest handles or the speed Wheeler has, then yes, I would prefer Wheeler. Particularly considering Wheeler is a very good assist man. Also, considering you can put Reeves on the floor at the same time, I'm not sure why you conclude it's an either or with them. 🤔

You may be the Benny type we hear so much about. 😉
Damn. You just joined this board a few days ago unless you created another user name as some have suggested. Why attack a veteran poster who brings some pretty good content to this board ? If you don’t like his memes don’t look at them. You say he doesn’t know much about basketball and then insinuate that Toppin should shoot 3’s. If Toppin and Wheeler shoot 3’s we’ll suck worse than we already do and we already suck about as bad as Triple C can make it.

Yeah, let’s bench the guy who averages 7.3 assists to 1.8 TO’s a game. You guys are something else. You think our offense looks stagnant now, hate to think what it would look like with Wheeler on the bench. Just so many clueless posters on this board.
How about ya eat ****, respectfully. Good ol heapin helpin.

I love Wheeler. He has a place. But for scoring and offense potency it ain’t him the team needs. No one respects his shot, for good reason. He clogs lanes and makes it harder to score around the rim for other guys because his man doubles and doesn’t recover because they don’t give a **** if he shoots a jumper. Michigan St, Gonzaga, and Bellarmine all guarded him the same way. It’s the blueprint. Good for him getting assists. He always will. He’s a good passer. He needs to be.

If ya wanna have a basketball smarts contest I bet I have more in my pecker head than you do in the one on your shoulders, with no offense intended.

We don't though. He is already playing pg when Wheeler is out, which is getting him experience. We just need to slowly expand that time per game he is taking the lead guard role. No need to rush it and cause problems.

We certainly don't need Wheeler to have bad games. We need him to continue to improve and have good games, particularly shooting wise.

He is currently shooting 33% from 3 on 18 attempts, or an avg of 3 attempts per game. That's not exactly awful. If he could maintain that range or improve at all, teams have to start respecting that a bit more and playing him more defensively. That certainly would open the floor a bit, and I really like Wheeler to be able to break down his man off the dribble more than anyone on the team.
The national average for 3-point FG% has been slightly above 34% for the better part of 30 years, with a couple 35% seasons as outliers. So Wheeler is shooting "average" this season. That's not terrible, and as you pointed out, teams will have to start respecting that more.

Really hope that's true. Love Wheeler but he's a change of pace guy and teams can corner us down the stretch and beat us when he's running the show. No reason why they can't all work together for a common goal.
Well, the fans' common goal is to win games and the NCAAT. Calipari's goal is to showcase NBA potential and change lives. Until Calipari understands the "common" part of "common goal", and that the fans' goals and his personal player goals can happen together (albeit win first, player potential showcasing will take care of itself), we will continue to be frustrated with a lack of deep tourney runs and bizarre, nonsensical substitution patterns.

The “slow rolling” and “peaking too soon” concept is something Cal came to a conclusion on after 2014 caught fire late and made a final 4 and then 2015 followed up being dominant all year and got beat in the F4.

The concept is completely over played and fallacy. Sure you have your 2011 UConns, 2014 UK, 2022 UNCs but most your champions were a top 10 team the majority of the year even if they hit a multi game slide mid season.

Since ‘15 tho Cal has tinkered with lineups early when there are clear simple fixes that can be made. He’s downplayed early season games and we often look unprepared early. We hear him consistently say “we haven’t worked on that yet” in regards to offense or certain defensive schemes bc he thinks he’s bringing them along to peak in March. He has completely bought into this wrong theory and it’s cost us more pre-Jan games than most realize and multiple seed lines…which could be the difference between s16/E8 or F4 based on matchups. It’s also a big part why we have that abysmal record since ‘15 against other blue bloods…bc we play them on Nov/Dec and while they’ve been full steam ahead and prepared, we have been “team building” and not introducing too much too quick.

Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

To shoot 33% from 3 when opposing teams BEG you to shoot them and don't come within 6 ft of you when your out there, means you should take the Wayne Turner approach and NEVER shoot one!!!

I would wager that by the end of the season, that % goes below 30 even with NO ONE guarding him!!!

That's true. I wonder if Cal has not been as worried about keeping Thiero and Ugonna "happy" with playing time, since for both, it's been stated numerous times they were both seen as guys that would be brought along more slowly. Apparently, both players (and their families) knew this coming in, and are playing the longer game. This is obviously much different than Cal trying to make the transition from Wheeler to Wallace. For that, I could easily see Wheeler continuing to be a starter all year, but seeing his minutes at the point diminish gradually.

As for Thiero and Ugo, it is still very early in the season, and if they happen to make strides in practice they could earn more minutes along the way... but I don't see that as a high possibility right now.

My biggest question to Cal right now, is what to do with Collins? To me, he's not playable at this point, but I think he's still going to put him out there at times he shouldn't.
I think maybe because he knew his dad, but probably because he came to campus as a 3* likely not expecting to play as a FR. But once here it became apparent to all he was closer to the other guys than expected, but Cal thinking he still ok with not playing much since his initial expectation was that (which I think is a mistake). You still got to give the kid a fair shot.

Not taking that bet, since I think it's a 50/50 chance.

And his last 2 years Turner attempted 100 3's, about 1.5/gm, also making 33%.

But agree completely that making 1/3 WIDE OPEN is very different than making 1/3 being guarded even a little.

What is it about UK PGs not being able to shoot: Turner, Saul, Hawkins, Rondo, Wall, Teague, Harrow, Fox, Briscoe, Hagans, Askew, Wheeler

Ones that could: Bradley, Knight, Andrew, Ulis, SGA, Tyty, Wallace

Not at all. But when they leave him open, he needs to continue to shoot them. I'll take 33% of his makes.

Because he's 3-16.... 18% this year, and 4-10 (with one of those banked) last year?

Could that be it?
Is that not capable of improving? Does it not benefit us if they start falling? Do shooters not go into slumps.

Who is attacking him? Do you consider honesty an attack?

It's kind of hard not to look at them. They are in every thread ge posts in.

He obviously doesn't. Why would you not want your 4 man shooting 3's? Particularly one that has shown he can make them at a good clip. He was great in the bahamas and pretty good in exhibitions from 3.

What happens to the interior when the 4 man is able to play on the perimeter? Who does that benefit the most down there? 😉

IF this scenario does play out, it won't be until this team has already dug itself a huge hole in terms of seeding for the NCAA tournament. And IF it does happen I'm sure the term "Tweak" will get thrown around once again and Calipari will be lauded for such a "brilliant coaching move". The truth however is that Wallace should have been starting over Wheeler from Day 1 and practically everyone who has watched this team knows that. Would there be some growing pains with Wallace as the primary #1 guard? Of course. That's when you sub in Wheeler and coach up your starting point guard for a few minutes during a game.
The bottomline line is Wallace should have been getting the bulk of point guard playing time NOW instead of later.

Ol' Lead Belly and his socks bank in all their triples... still pimpin' a scrimmage game versus YMCA level talent in a ballroom with a rolling clock and keystone cop refs...

Your 4th man is Collins on the perimeter - end of discussion [laughing]
