Wow! Jack lived a great life and was such a wonderful person! He had a heart of gold! Met him in the sixties in Tupelo and we were friends until the day he died.

Sometimes he appeared to be more than fair to the opponent yet he made State earn every damn yard. He wasn't one who could be referred to as a broadcast homer, as many are. They always made a big deal out of the Georgia announcer and he couldn't hold a candle to Jack. Only reason he got more press was that Georgia won a helluva lot more than State. But their kind, who were true radio guys, are almost extinct now. I consider the Lsu duo to be the biggest homers in the conference.

Great point, Was21. Jack and Larry Munson were my fav two SEC announcers of all time. The long time Tennessee announcer and the AU announcers were maybe 3rd and 4th in my pecking order.
And you're right: If we'd won as big as Georgia did, Jack would be better known nationally.

Jack and Munson were as direct opposites as was possible in broadcast philosophy. Cristil was an impartial, detailed spinner of word pictures to depict every nuance of game action. Munson was an unabashed homer that would go off on excited tirades that could leave you wondering what the hell was happening (i.e. lindsey, scott, lindsey scott, lindsey scott or the infamous hobnail boot commentary. Huh?).

I held no ill will toward munson but never cared for his style.

Perfectly stated.

Jack was extremely professional in his commentary

There was no doubt he was an MSU supporter, but was not a homer announcing "fan" like so many announcers. And he would never go off on an embarrassing tirade like the Auburn announcers did during the Iron Bowl, when they whined and cried like babies as Muschamp got his penalty for F-bombing the side judge. Stan White said "I defy anyone to tell me an Iron Bowl where Alabama had more penalty yards than Auburn." Unfortunately for him, not only does it happen often, but in THIS YEAR'S Iron Bowl, Alabama had more penalty yards than Auburn.

I agree with your assessment. Always just liked Munson's deep husky voice. Jack was the better of the two and was brilliant at painting the picture, as you said. "Bulldogs are moving from left to right as you look at your radio". "Paint this one in maroon & white", etc.

I meant "Wrap" this one. Was still thinking about my sentence above about Jack "painting a picture".

Here is where jack and muson were alike.

Both men had very a distinctive tone and cadence that gave their voices color, interest, and uniqueness. One knew instantly who you were listening to if you had ever heard them before.

I liked the sound of munson's gravelly growl but the content was way too rah rah georgia for my taste.

Just remembered another one: We were playing on the road in basketball one night and extended our lead to an unreachable point with a three pointer. Jack said,"Looks like a bomb went off in here"....talking about the home team fans exiting quickly.

Don't hassle him. You know all us real State fans misquote that all the time*

Gah
Junction John.... I've been around probably at least a decade or two more than you have. I've always made plenty of mistakes, but they do get a little more frequent as you get longer in the tooth. I'll bet that even someone like you will eventually make a mistake too. Maybe not! I'm sure I'll make a lot more.
I said that I repeated the word "painted" from my previous sentence and corrected it to "wrap", but maybe you and T-Bone were too dumb to understand that.
Growing up in Tupelo, Jack was a personal friend of mine for over fifty years. If he heard either of you call me a Bear, he'd laugh just as hard as I do!
Jack was as staunch of a Bulldog as ever lived, but he was objective and was not a homer. So if he were alive and on this board today, he'd probably get called a "Bear" on a regular basis by a few on here.

It's cool Sandman.

Everyone believes you're a State fan. Seriously. What State fan wouldn't forget a famous Jack Crystal** line that he used in every MSU win?

Kurt....I explained that I used "painted" in the previous sentence and the word was stuck in my mind. Immediately corrected it to "wrap"when that was pointed out. I really don't know ANY Ole Miss fans who would even know anything about that line, "Wrap it in Maroon & White". Just like we don't know anything about Munson's pet lines or stan Torgerson's pet lines. I'll bet if you asked a hundred Ole Miss fans on the street what Jack's signature line after a win was, not a single one could tell ya. If you have NEVER in your life made a misstake then I understand. I make a lot of them as I get older.
Ya know Kurt, it appears that the only thing you do on this board is attack everyone who is objective. If Jack were on this board, you and a few others would attack him on about 25% of his posts just like you do me. If all you want is just a sunshine pumped board, I'd suggest EliteDawgs or Gene's Page for ya. I'm on Gene's Page but I rarely post, because you cannot be objective there. That's why I like this board better. Kurt.... I could not really care any less about what you think. So keep on trying to belittle me. I'll just continue to laugh at you. LOL

I buy what you are saying...

I forget a bunch of crap too, until I remember it.

Being on 6P is like being part of a large pack of Dogs,
Once in awhile they are going to give you ****,
just to test you.
