Is it Nike or the RU AD?

It’s hard to find certain Rutgers gear and even when we had Nike they still kept it vanilla OTOH their Tier 1 programs always had a ton of stuff. I always figured it was something screwy with the licensing fees.

Try going on any of the Lacrosse supplier websites and looking for Rutgers gear. I can buy for all the Big Ten programs except for Rutgers.

Agreed. But a lot of it is whoever controls the Block R trademark. Rutgers is notoriously stingy with it & has a boatload of rules & regs that must be followed & your design approved before they will let you make something.

@SF88 has a classic story of when Schiano came back And part of his deal was the helicopter. Someone gave it a nickname & Steve-O designed some shirts with the helicopter coming in for a landing, the Block R on the side of the helicopter, sideways because the helicopter was, you know, coming in for the landing.
Rutgers wouldn't approve the shirt until the R was straight. So the shirts were produced with a nose in landing helicopter & a straight up R

fully agree....most of the good stuff I have bought are either on Vintagebrand or Homefield or Rallyhouse

i went into the bookstore and walked out with nothing...nothing appealed to me. I like Scarletfever but they do not have the quirky more expensive stuff either. that has the nice soft t shirt blends

I find alot of the RU stuff being sold to be the hard cotton shirts and cheap sweatshirts

Go to other large schools and they have enormous merch shops on campus and often really great non-university shops as well. In Knoxville there are at least 3 Alumni Hall stores in the surrounding area with enormous amounts of really great Tennessee stuff. It’s like Christmas morning when you walk in the store. Every brand and style you can imagine.

How about the Big Ten Store? Look at the total numbers of merchandise available each school has.

Rutgers 1093 ...3/4 of which is tee shirts
Only UCLA & USC have less items for sale

Supply and demand?
Ohio State and Nebraska have large, rabid fanbases.
The Illinois versus Rutgers numbers raises questions as to why the selection is so small for Rutgers. Perhaps the demand is not there?

I think you nailed it. No demand. We have a rabid fan base….only problem is it is very small. Even kohls cut back dramatically on their RU apparel. Nobody wants to stock inventory that isn’t going to sell. Sucks but it’s the truth.

Our merch was stolen off the Seaside Boardwalk during a commercial of the Jersey shore. I think Snooki is heading up are marketing and merch department

Rutgers merchandise (volume and quality) is pathetic compared to our peers, and in some ways seems to have gotten worse..

Demand plays a role, but it can’t be the only reason. You can find a lot of smaller schools with much more inventory available (online and in person).

I’m sure Rutgers Mickey Mouse team that manages licensing plays a role.

Adidas is probably to blame as well.

Demand isnt there or fans are forced to buy cheap products? Why are all Rutgers t shirts oversized and poor heavy Guilden type quality. Rutgers seemingly has a hundred different varieties of zip ups but none Im interested in. People are still wearing Apex Rutgers jackets from 25 years ago and Colosseum jackets from 15 years ago because there has literally been no new Rutgers jacket on the market. Why is Rutgers vintage and retro gear so limited and can only be found at niche website. Why cant you find a soft Rutgers t shirt.

On another note i still have a Rutgers Sweatshirt I bought on first floor in Allen Hall on Busch in 1989..excellent heavy quality. Now all the sweatshirts are thin and cost $80

I make my own Rutgers gear. I like the 17Q66 logo. Got a scarlet baseball cap with the logo in black. Was told it was best Rutgers swag ever by a guy when on way to football game. Got a grey t shirt with the logo in black at center on chest.

Also have a grey tshirt with my chop R avatar on it. If anybody wants one, let me know.

Not too expensive. Most screen printing shops have t shirts and caps in inventory. Give them the artwork and they have the tshirt or cap ready next day. Costs around $30.

I searched years for a winter or mid layer RU Quarter or Half Zip. Odd you have to go to Peter Millar or Antigua to find one. Ridiculous Adidas hasn’t made one.

There's a seller from Staten Island on eBay that has hundreds+ of great classic patches for many many teams. For some teams multiple options. I got this one for like $5 bucks plus a couple of dollars to send in the mail.

Just need to iron or sew it on a nice sweatshirt or pullover for a super unique item.

This particular logo is used on homebrand and I think vintage. I do not understand why the Rutgers stores carry ZERO of this product.

Its a kick *** logo

I am happy to answer questions, as best I can, about RU merchandising and licensing. Please don't confuse my answers with my love and passion for RU, just reality.

I went to USC, UCLA and Maryland bookstores back in the fall. I've been to both on campus bookstores and off campus stores at PS-MSU-UM-NEB-IU-OSU from the B1G in addition to Syracuse-Clemson-South Carolina and the local UDel and Princeton. The choices, on campus and online, for RU gear aren't bad at all. I'm not sure what folks are expecting.

Please point out a "smaller school" that has a wider selection of merch. You can't compare to OSU or Tenn. Those type schools have been winning in a huge way for generations. We beat Louisville 18 years ago. They have 90,000+ stadiums that are sold out. they have a large, single campus that concentrates the students and the stadiums together. They are named after the state they represent. NJ folks don't follow Rutgers in the same bandwagon manner other states do. IMO, the biggest problem is simply demand. It's not there. We ordered the minimum and still have more than half left of the Rate Bowl tee.

The Izzo 1/4 zip is a nice Nike product. Are we liking the product, or the logo, or both. Scarlet Fever has a really nice Adidas 1/4 zip. I grabbed one myself. Having a cartoon Sparty/Knight dribbling just eliminated 90% of fans. It's only appealing to basketball fans now. It's cute, but wouldn't sell at RU. We've had very nice top shelf Nike and Adidas stuff and it mostly doesn't sell well. People aren't buying $70-$90 hoodies and lots of muttered comments about $75 Adidas polos. That leaves the next step down which is the mid-tier Champion or Colosseum. The step below that is the Pennant or Badger brands. Below that is the Jerzee and Gildan wholesale brands. Honestly, the Gildan soft style tee is more comfortable then most tees out there. The advent and growth of the internet allows the Peter Millar, Lulu or Johnnie O items available to anyone, at any time. The lack of selection is simply a result of supply/demand. On campus, we focus more on the students and they're not buying Peter Millar. RU is not a wealthy student body.

I've had more than my share of disagreements with RU Licensing, but lack of selection or availability is not on them. Rutgers itself doesn't control what is offered by any company, or where it's sold. They can be limiting with art sometimes. Adidas has sucked with product offerings and support, but the demand hasn't been there. Personally, I don't like that retro patch logo, but tough to argue subjective. At $38 a tee and $75 hoodies, it's available for those who like it. What you all want to see???
