Hello all, just here to talk Saturday’s matchup. I’m ecstatic, I’m hyped, I’m on absolute cloud 9 after defeating Penn state in yesterday’s game. Especially in the fashion it happened. We have had next to zero success in the years I’ve watched the team. You will find nothing but humble Hoosier football fans. A little on our team now

Our timing looked off. QB to receiver just looked a step or two off. We could have blown the door wide open on penn state early. But Penix over threw 2 wide open receivers for what have been walk in touchdowns.Penix never looked on rythm until the final 2 minute drill.

For much of the game we relied on our defense. Let me say that again. We relied on our defense. Something that I’ve never said in 25 years of watching. We played a bend but don’t break defense that allowed them plenty of yards but eventually they would make a costly mistake before scoring. The defensive strength is our secondary we have some real good players at safety and cornerback. We still cannot generate much of any pass rush at all. So we blitz often!

On offense the biggest question mark is our offensive line. We have a strong right tackle. And a good center. Both guards are first year starters and our left tackle was eaten alive by Toney. However Toney Is good and used his speed to easily get by our 6’8 360 pound tackle. Still not sure we can generate a consistent run game. We will probably throw 60%+ of the game. Stevie Scott our running back is no slouch. He does not have break away speed or moves to make you miss. But if he gets to the second level he will run over a player or two and get those extra yards. Receivers are solid, but only whop Philyor has break away speed that could require a double team. I look for the offense to perform much better from here out.

I love that Rutgers beat MSU and I like Schiano and think he can have you guys back to a competitive program week in and week out. What both our programs struggle with is trying to take the next step while playing in the BIG East. This week though, with our returning experience and a week to get the offense going I think Indiana doesn’t make as many mistakes as MSU did. I think Rutgers comes out swinging hard and Indiana counter punches in the 3rd and 4th quarter.
I predict IU-35 Rutgers- 24. Good luck. And let tell me about your team and predictions !!

Congrats on the win, Hoosier.

Even though your board on SBNation has been one of the harshest about Rutgers's membership in the Big Ten, it's great to welcome an Indiana fan coming off an improbably win against the Nitts.

Savor it.

Good post and congrats on your big win yesterday. This fan base loves seeing PSU lose....and on a day when RU wins? Well, let’s just say those two events don’t happen on the same day very often.

I think IU has the obvious upper hand next week. Our strengths will be run defense, swarming tackling, and hopefully the same ball hawking D we saw yesterday that will force TOs and give us some short fields. On offense, OL is a a big question mark, but they played much better than expected yesterday. If the OL holds up, our back (Pacheco) can be explosive and our QB (Vedral) can make things happen with his legs. Passing game is a question mark.

Both our teams should be feeling better about themselves than they have in a long time, so we’ll see who comes out punching and maintains the momentum. I’d love to be wrong, but I’m thinking something like IU 27, RU 17.

Well we know it won't be 35-0 again. Other than that, we're still trying to find our offensive and defensive identity. The culture has changed and the kids play hard for the new sheriff in town. We are vastly improved from the dogsh*t you saw last year..

You'll win, but this is only year one after the worst coach in college football history got done with his systematic mission of destruction. You also have an upperclassmen laden program, so your guys will be on the ball from the jump like against psu.

I agree. A Hoosier football fan typically isn’t like the basketball fan base. Of course I root for both. Majority of our fan base roots for Notre dame come football season. I guess during the 70s-90s basketball was top notch and our fan base became arrogant. Now the vast majority of fans are just angry because we have never gotten back to that status.

it’s hard to find arrogance from our football fans. We can’t act like we have been there because we haven’t. Most haven’t gotten to see success just years of heartbreaking losses and letdowns. Awful coaches and years of fielding 2 star players that would be better served playing D2 ball.

Our coach is a likable guy who worked his way up from being a high school coach. He preaches love and faith, (things most don’t care to hear). That’s how he has built our program with players commiting based on the family vibe. We often can’t get Midwest players, they think of IU as lame and a losing program. So coach Allen made Florida a priority, we have 20 scholarship players from the state. He goes and gets underrecruited 2 and 3 stars from Florida the big boys passed on. A lot are now upperclassman and have always played with a chip on their shoulder. If local and Midwest players won’t give our program a chance some of the southern kids will.

would love to see your program have a quick rebuild, maybe Shock some people and make
a bowl game this season. As always, beat purdue in whatever sport you play them in for us!!

Both of us won games but both of our opponents outgained us. We each got breaks, you when they didn’t take a knee and we got the advantage of a lot of unforced errors by Sparty. So, that being said, a lot of what happens this weekend may be the result of which team corrects some things better than the other. First game is over. Try to improve off the first game performance. Could be a good game, hope so. Many of us are hoping your guys are so high because of your win that we get you a little flat. Probably not but who knows. Thanks for your post. And good luck to you guys starting the week after you play us.

It’s great to see some non-arrogant B1G fans. Wish we could both stay undefeated for longer. We still don’t really know what we have - especially on offense. Good luck to IU but I hope we come out on top. RU 23-17.
Yeah we have not been treated very well by the BIG teams since we joined . I thought they all had more class back then but we get abused for whatever reason. Go RU!

Congrats on a great win Saturday. MSU struggled and we played better then I thought we would. I think we have a fair shot but still think you guys will hold on.
We're in a three step rebuild here. Be competitive and beat teams we should be competitive with and maybe beat (see MSU).
Beat the plus teams in our division (that's you guys).Don't think we're quite there yet but maybe be competitive.
Compete with the big boys (in the future).

p.s. In my book Coach Knight is greatest college basketball coach to ever step into a gym.

Not sure PSU's defense is any better than ours, and I think our offense will be vastly improved week one to week two. Wouldn't be surprised if we get the same result as we got vs. MSU.

Congrats on the win. All of RU fandom was pulley for you LAST week against PSU.

I'm hoping for a good defensive effort by RU with applying lots of pressure. Our offensive play calling was good against MSU,but has a ways to go. MSU turned the ball over 7 times and we won by 11. If you take care of the ball we won't have the horses to keep up.

Best of luck the rest of they from week 3 on!

Still trying to figure out what your coach was thinking with the onside (?) Kick after the momentous TD plus 2 to tie the game. Was it a flubbed kick or was he trying to catch the NITS sleeping at the wheel. Players can't fault him for the 2 point conversion in OT but letting PSU kick to win the game in regulation would have caused a revolt

It wasn't an onside kick. The placekicker just shanked it. If you were watching, Tom Allen was nearly apoplectic when they showed the sideline after the kick. To his credit, he got himself under control before he ripped the poor kid's head off, but for a moment there, it looked like it was going to be like Jeff Brohm tearing into Brian on national TV

This assertion that the majority of IU fans root for ND during FB season is total BS. It's a myth started by Purdue fans years ago when IU was bad at FB. I graduated from IU (twice) and know a lot of fans. Most are neutral about ND, and a good number don't like the school. I had one friend who was an IU and ND fan, but he was from South Bend and had a connection with the university. Maybe you are a ND fan, but quit spreading this crap about the IU fan base.

If I were an IU an alum / fan, I don’t think I would be able to root for ND in any sport. ND’s fan base seems so arrogant to me. Although now that Schiano is back, I’d like a shot at Kelly and his team in 3 or 4 years. And would love for our hoops team to beat the sh*t out of Mike Brey and his team. It still pisses me off when Chris Christie was Governor of N.J. he asked brey for advice on what to do with Rutgers hoops during the mike rice debacle here. Brey says to Christie that he thinks Rutgers should shut the program down..... So F*k ND.

The joy of each teams win should fade by now look at the good and the bad. OP did a good job. Rutgers had a similar strength to its game. A Schiano defense! The offense way better than year before but they were more clutch than consistent. It still was great to see. Should be a big battle Saturday. I do think the Vegas line is correct from a gambling standpoint

Where have we literally lived through (not just heard) this before? LOL

If you replace Midwest with NJ and Allen with Schiano in what I quoted from you above, it's the exact same recruiting blueprint from Schiano's first tour at Rutgers starting in 2001.

Good to see that same strategy working for you guys at IU. Looking forward to a good game.

In terms of what to look for from RU...honestly we only have 1 game to go on as well with a new coaching staff, and a roster that looks very different than last year. But a few things we know:

Greg Schiano made his mark overachieving with an undersized front 7. In particular, he gets the most out of quick undersized DL by using motion, attacking, and hitting gaps. I don't think is intention is to have undersized DL forever, but for now, what we saw during game 1 was classic Schiano D with lots of penetration, gambling, and a quick small DL creating chaos.

The way to beat that D is with counters and misdirection, as they over pursue. And they are susceptible to the big play.

Our local high school here in Grant County has quite a good football team: Eastbrook Panthers.

Good OP. Agree with others on the difference between Indiana football and basketball fans.

Both our offenses struggled.. the difference is that our modest offensive output looked FANTASTIC to us based on what we have seen in recent years.

Your bend-but-don't-break D is typical of our coaches Ds. Our D is designed to stop the run, backstop long plays from becoming TDs and take risks to get the O into 3rd and long situations... meaning.. at some point on a typical drive we should get you into that 3rd and long that kills it.

You had the tougher opponent. So it is hard to judge what your offense is capable of. Our offense.. maybe with analyzing the game film we'll have a better idea as to what works and what doesn't.

I am pre-hope-dicting a close, low-scoring game and narrow victory for Rutgers... mostly because of the glow of victory for you guys and who you play the following week. Though I doubt you guys will be looking past us.. maybe some of the young men on the team are.

My wish, what I hope to see from us is to establish the run and increase yards per rush.. once you do that passing opportunities open up. That and continued strong D.
