Cats come out flat and UI goes up 14-3 by the half. After the half, the offense drives the ball the length of the field and scores at the beginning of the 3rd. Missed PAT leaves it at 14-9. Interception by Van Hoos at the beginning of the 4th leads to a field goal. Cats get the ball back with 4:00 minutes remaining, drive down to the 4 yard line. After a near interception in the end zone, Mitchell kicks the field goal with :24 remaining. Cats lead 15-14. The Illini offense which has not generated a single first down since the beginning of the third quarter suddenly turns into a juggernaut and marches down the field in two large plays to get nearly into field position. Cubit calls a throw over the middle to get a first down and set up a field goal. However, the receiver has to come back for the ball and is tackled short of the down marker. The clock continues to run and time runs out before the Illini can spike the ball.
On Sunday, it is announced that Cubit is not retained as head coach. The reasoning is that he had his chance to win the national championship and beat NU and managed to do neither. The UI fans are crazier than we are.
