South Carolina is set to hire Coastal Carolina baseball coach Kevin Schnall as its next baseball head coach, ON3’s Pete Nakos reports.

I'm shocked. I didn't think he'd come here.

Welcome Coach Schnall!

Go Cocks!

I am surprised he would leave the good thing he has at his alma mater to take on this disaster but I hope both sides are pleased with the decision when it's all said and done.
I guess making generational money is enough reason to take on a rebuilding job. If he succeeds or fails, he and the future Schnall generations will be comfortable.

Certainly looks to be a good hire. Makes more sense than the last two for sure.

But as Preston mentioned above why would he want to take this on? I’m interested by this. Money is always the obvious answer, but I wonder if that is the deal most of us think it is? He’ll definitely be paid more but the jump in pay isn’t near the jump it is in football. So is the pay factor the same motivator in baseball as it is in football for these coaches? I can’t imagine life being bad in Conway at just shy of 400k.

He’s leaving his alma matter and has been apart of the program for their biggest achievements so I hope to hear what is driving the bus for him on this decision.

So that I'm clear on this - they're hiring a guy who won 19 less games this year than he did last year, including going 4-10 in the last 14 games of the season?

Seems to be trending in a specific direction...

Yep, it's got CWS written all over it! :D

Questionable move by the coach and a mistake-in-waiting by the AD to hire a man whose dream job is an SEC school other than us.

Not too excited on the hire. Think 2 years as hc is not enough time to prove he is capable. I guess will find it out like all the other men's programs. Wait and see. In the church we elect deacons and elders that are not young and have proven themselves before installin then in office.

I haven't followed it terribly closely, but isn't this who most of the fan base was clamoring for?

I followed as much as reading this board.

I saw initial excitement, then questioning the hire.

To be honest, was there a homerun hire (pun intended) out there?

I just hope we're not fielding another one delusional team. I am beyond tired of seeing that of us.
Being one dimensional I blame alot on analytics being overrated. Analytics can be helpful but sometimes the players ability overrides those numbers. This could even change game to game. Maybe swing not the same on given day, weather etc. I hope this staff let's the players abilities take over with minimal analytics.

Not that I know of...to answer the latter question. But I don't follow college baseball much at all, aside from keeping up with our record.

Just took the time to look Schnall up. From all the chatter surrounding him, I was surprised to see he only has 2 years of head coach experience. I'd feel better if he had strung together some successful seasons.

It raises the question if no experienced major program coaches wanted the job? Or did we just make a Tanner-esque lazy hire? Or was he the top guy we wanted all along?

I do wonder how much interest there was out there.

Yeah I'm not a big analytics guy either. Personally I'd rather see a coach having a feel for his team and know what they are capable of on a given day and a feel for a situation in front of them rather than go with what some stat tells us how to approach a given situation. But more than anything, I want to see us ready to play however we need to play for ANY given situation and look like we have actually practiced it. That has been missing for quite some time here IMO. If the new coach comes in and right off the bat tells us what we will not be doing with the idea he is telling us what we want to hear with some kinda preconceived identity in mind... well call me disappointed. All I want to hear is we are going to do everything we need to to win a game. Plain and simple.

Fill me in. I don't know much about Schnall other than he played at Coastal and had coached in some capacity at Coastal for many years. What is his dream SEC program? Gonna assume it's not Mizzou.

Ole Miss. His fascination with them is well known.

I'm not making any judgements on Schnall. He may be fantastic I just thought, with how bad shape our programs is in, they would have gone for more of a non-geriatric proven winner instead of a relative novice.

There is speculative reporting the current AD may be a person of interest for the AD at Virginia Tech, that position would be highly coveted.
