Isolation Offense

I hope Pike learns from this game for the future.

The isolation offense we were attempting to run at the end of this game and other games CAN work consistently, but only if you have legit NBA talent on the roster, which we don't have right now.

If you're going to score in this set, 2 things have to happen:

1. You clear out the lane and the ball handler needs to stunt, jelly, or clown on the competition to get to the hole.
2. You drive and kick to a shooter who is straight buckets 40-60% of the time behind the arc.

Currently, we can do neither consistently in regular game situations let alone late game NCAA tourney situations.

Much prefer we run our "normal" offense in late game situations where we work to get 1 or 2 decent looks throughout the entire shot clock until we get the NBA talent needed to run legit ISO.

I agree. It's almost hindered us that Geo became known as such a clutch/big shot maker because our offense at the end of games has become just iso/hero ball and let Geo hit a step back. He did it a bunch throughout his career but we went to the Iso ball WAY too early yesterday. Ball movement and feeding Myles inside was opening up shots on the perimeter.

Another drawback to isolation offense is you can disrupt your team's grove, sometimes it's just best to leave well enough alone because if you do need it at one point (like we did in the final minute and change), it might be gone.

Houston's coach made a comment during his post-game that our isolation offense gave them a lot of trouble on the defensive end. First time I've heard an opposing coach make such a comment about our offense. It appears to me that its an easier offense to guard until your team gets in foul trouble, then our offense can really be a problem.

There has to be numbers done on how we did going isolation offense, I would be interested in seeing them.

You can't trust the guards to not turn the ball over in regular offense, because the guards are either going to try and split a trap (if you run your regular offense).

Watch from the 10 minute mark until the last 3 to 4 minutes of the Minnesota finale.....there is no offense that you got done, unless you have something in the post.....and that post player is either Myles (who draws a double) and then has to find a player to pass it to.....you can't give that responsibility a guard wired to score and wants to go playmake.

I don't know how random and how we just had plays made on the fly by Jacob and Geo.....that is part of decision making and neither guard showed that ability to take care of the ball consistently enough.

I would really like to see Geo, Jalen Miller and Jaden Jones play together as a tandem and support them with good decision makers by Caleb and Mulcahy (when Mulcahy is actually not overpasses and looks to score) . Find a 6th potential guard, whether you can get Mathis to not play solely downhill, or get a portal guard who can defend and get something off the dribble. The turnovers not the isolation are the issues in regular offense.

Isolation is fine.

but when you have their top player walking on 1-leg and 2 others in foul trouble - you MUST take advantage- why we weren't running picks directly at Jarreau over and over - or driving right at the other 2 when they were on the floor - I don't know..

it was a rock fight - when the other guy's eye is bleeding - that's what you punch at...

I don't hate the isolation... I hate that we stopped being the scrappy team that got us there.

The ISO was actually fine if we run it correctly. We had RHJ and Myles both come to high post to clear out the lane for the guards to drive. It worked one time with Geo. He simply had to beat his man, which he did. With under 1 minute to go down 1 Geo decided (for whatever reason) to take a jumper instead of driving it, which lead to the TO. Once again, the plays were there we simply didn't execute.

I think Kelvin Sampson was being diplomatic towards Rutgers. Always liked him as a coach .

Exactly!!! The foul trouble aside, it’s so stupid why the heck didn’t we figure out a way to isolate on the hip pointer guy that was in agony!!!

if you ask me, the hip pointer thing in THIS game was exaggerated. I call BS on that. agony ? no way. the guy was milking it, not that much different than flopping or feigning contact when there is none.

He played well in crunch time after this. Good player. Nothing to take advantage there.
