... quarterback we've had since since the 70's with a legitimate shot at being a high 1st round pick as a QB?

I see some similarities to DeShaun Watson with his game, and if appears as if the pro's are transitioning to spread option concepts.

Who do you have in mind? Tagge? Ferragamo?

In my little exposure to those years, statistically, he may turn out better...

He's great for sure! But the rules over the last 20 to 30 years have changed drastically to make higher scored games through the air. HUGE difference imo......

I love the kid and he has the potential to be an NFL QB. We might be getting a little head of ourselves here. He has it all. However, in order to be a 1st round pick, arm strength is very important. He needs to improve this aspect of his game if at all possible. The above mentioned QBs had superior arm strength than Martinez, but with spread being the future of the NFL, it might not matter as much in 2 to 3 years.

Who doesn’t see Cam Newton in this guy?

I don’t. Cam Newton is 6’5, Martinez is 6’2. Newton has a cannon. Martinez is a high level intermediate thrower, but does not have the tremendous arm strength that Newton has.

This is not a knock on Martinez. I love the guy. But I’m not sure Newton is a great comparison.

Martinez will really, really have to impress if he wants to make it to the NFL due to his height. Obviously Mayfield, Wilson and Brees are shorter guys. And Rodgers is only 6’2. But the NFL is usually weary about guys that are 6’2 and under. Obviously not impossible, but it could be a factor.

Absolutely, I think he'll be better. I'm just thinking Tagge was the last 1st rounder we had.

Not just the rules, athletes have drastically changed. There are more widely accessible camps that develop skills at a younger age, and fitness in general has made drastic strides.

Exactly, measurables like height and a rocket arm are what get guys into the first round, and Newton was an exceptional guy in that regard.

More spread teams could make him more attractive though,

Uhh, what? Darnold, Mayfield and Jackson are all as tall or shorter than Martinez.

DeShaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes are 6'2" as well.

Cam is a physical freak. I liken Martinez more to a Mariota-type of guy.
