This isn't a breakdown, but Arizona ran a lot of drop 8 in 2018. Obviously, Arizona had a bad defense, but it is an example of him putting up points on a drop 8.
The whole concept requires a lot of precision timing and really some anticipation in order to work. Takes tons of repetition and consistency. Otherwise it is a cluster17 filled with interceptions. Which is exactly what we have. When we get it ironed out we may not beat Bama but we will consistently win 9 or 10 a year.
Arizona was 118th in the country in Total Defense in 2018. Anything worked against them.
Also, they were dropping D-linemen a good bit of the time and not getting deep enough in their drops. The teams we are playing are keeping everything in front.
The problem is SEC defensive linemen are on a completely different level than PAC 12. Just look at NFL drafts - you can count the PAC 12 DL taken in the entire draft on one hand. The SEC may have more taken in the first round.
You’ve got to have a decent OL to protect against even just 3 SEC DL who are 100% rushing the QB.
