Has anyone been to Vatican City? Have you seen the size of their wall? It's enormous. And the guarded entrance?
Also, the Pope seems either confused or intentionally misleading. You can both build a wall and build bridges of cooperation and friendship. Walls make great neighbors, after all. It is very tough to have great relations when so many bad things are crossing a relatively open border. Walls would make better relations much easier, imo.
