It's amazing that even back then there has to be plenty of recorded audio of Rupp interviews, but no one can provide undisputed evidence that he ever used any racial slurs. It's also amazing that any accusations came out after his death without Rupp being able to defend himself. There is proof however of him coaching Black players, and trying to integrate, helping a black player get a scholarship to another school when he wasn't allowed to give him one at UK. Don't see any evidence of his actions being racist. Just because someone may have an opinion that he was a racist, and may say it or write it over and over does not make it true. The bottom line is produce undisputed evidence that he was a racist, or drop this right now period!!

I'd love some of this privilege. I grew up farming. We weren't poor and I loved that time. Had to pay for college myself and finally get a respiratory therapist job. I got that through hard work.

Plus morg, you know what I went through in Iraq and especially Afghanistan. I've earned everything I've got.
Damn right you have. And allowed some of us the privilege to be idiots. And thanks for that.

I agree 100% anyone that tells me Rupp was a racist I simply ask “ When were you born?” If after 1977 when Rupp died I dismiss them as a Johnny come lately
I was around him 4 years if he showed racist tendencies I would know .
He didn’t plain and simple Let him Rest In Peace
Leave Rupp Arena alone.

Adolph Rupp has to be one of the most scrutinized people when it comes to race relations and yet there is no damning evidence, only much evidence to the contrary. Let the man rest in peace.

Happy to debate facts vs. facts with anyone, but to be clear — Adolph Rupp was not racist

Naively, I now realize, I thought I would never again have to write the column about whether Adolph Rupp was a racist. The facts simply do not support the notion that he was. Period. Yet once again, 43 years after his death, the legendary University of Kentucky basketball coach is being attacked by some opportunists who refuse to let the facts get in the way of their prejudices and perceptions.

One thing from Reed’s article:

I’m humbly proud that I stood up for African-American players and coaches. And I was happy in 1963 when Gov. Ned Breathitt and UK president John Oswald announced that the university’s coaches, including Rupp and football coach Charlie Bradshaw, were free to recruit African-American athletes.

I’ve mentioned this many times but UK publicly announced that their athletic programs were open to all races in late May 1963. This was under UK President Frank Dickey who has done much of the legwork, including polling SEC members how they would react if UK integrated their athletic programs.

John Oswald wasn’t hired until after this announcement and in fact Oswald didn’t arrive on the Lexington campus until that fall.

I think for various reasons people have tended to give Oswald way more credit than he deserves for UK’s integration efforts.

If anyone thinks Rupp was truly a bigot—they’re apparently not able to think for themselves. Weak-mindedness
