Is it the DDO?

Is this college basketball's version of the run and shoot? Is the gig up? Have teams figured it out? I ask this because the cats offense has been far from good this season.
And right after watching Kentucky score 18 in the opening half, I saw Florida get blown out by Alabama and score 17 in its second half. Both teams look pretty explosive on paper, but implosive on that court.
They both run the dribble drive.
Thoughts?

I have thought that our offense has looked bad most of the year. Just does not looked like they get into the flow of the game.

DDO, or any good offense, relies on players passing. Our team thus far does not pass. Nine times out of ten, if you see one of our guys drive, he's shooting it.

Florida lives and dies by the 3 and is a donut team.

Cats are clueless in the half-court and struggle when kept out of transition scoring.

No real mysteries here.

We never try to get anything in transition. This team plays slower than tubbys teams.

the biggest problem we have is no true PG that will get you 6 -10 assists a game

Except against WVU in that first half. Even tho we turned it over like 10 times in that first ten minutes, when we broke the press we actually pushed it and scored easy baskets. They pulled away towards the end of that half but in the beginning, I was very impressed how we pushed it.

I'm not sure why we don't do that more often TBH.

We don’t have enough capable dribblers to run the DDO. Well, we do but I doubt we’d play a three guard offense. Often we play lineups with just 1 competent dribbler who even attempts to get assists.

Last year our offense was #12 on KenPom. Year before it was #5. Year before that, #6. Year before that, #14. I don't think college basketball magically "figured it out" this year.

When you have as young a team as we do, you can't teach them offensive systems in just a couple of months. You have to as Cal says, rely on players making plays. Right now, other than SGA (and he still makes some bad decisions), we don't have anybody who can consistently create their own shot.

Beating your man off the dribble, setting a ball screen at the top of the key, or three perimeter players doing a weave is not half court offense.
Honest question, When was the last time you saw anyone from UK score on a backcut or screen? Just because the NBA doesn't do it certainly don't make it a bad idea.

We rank 10th in offensive rebounding. We rank 8th in getting to the line.

We rank 229th in turnover % on offense.

A telling stat about the team's shooting confidence is we rank near the bottom of 3pt field goal attempts per game. This is a result of poor passing/facilitating and standing around watching others go one on one.

ya know tho it's never really been a main focal point of any offense under Cal. Even when we had good shooters.

Since 2012, we have consistently ranked in the very high 200s or even 300s in 3 pt FG attempts.

I think it plays more into Cal's philosophy of getting to the rim. He looks at it like you are either going to A) Make it, B) Miss it but grab the offensive board, C) get fouled.........or D) miss it and the other team rebounds. 3 outta those 4 things are good.

This team gets exposed offensively when we run up against a defense that doesn't allow us to get to the rim and we settle for mid range jump shots that our guys just cannot hit.

Great post..Agree. We are trying to win in college to win a Natl Title. Cal's offense is horrid.

Interesting data. Says to me it's just some stat that reveals little. Says that the most efficient UK team in the last four years was the one with the least upside.

except that efficiency stat says very much about who ends up winning it all in the end and has been since they've been kept.

efficiency isn't some made up stat number......it's essentially your points per game just factoring in the pace of the game and SOS.

Our problem that year was never offense. We had two guards who could put up huge scoring numbers. We averaged 79.5 ppg, second only to last year among Cal's teams. Shot the three better than every year but 2011 and 2012, higher overall FG% than every year but 2010 and 2012.

Cal has recruited a team of athletes instead of basketball player with the exception of a couple guys. Add to that the fact that the guys are all young and this is what you get.

That's the biggest problem with what Cal is trying to do here. If he doesn't get a couple of top 5 guys in each class then we're going to struggle. And then you turn around the next year and repeat. 4 guys off this **** show of a team are projected first round, 4. So next year will no different.

Unless Cal changes the culture at UK (of everyone trying to leave after one year) or he starts winning battles for the elite 5 stars (Bagley, Young, Barrett, Williamson, etc) we won't make it past to the final four again.

We haven’t run the dribble drive at Kentucky ever.

Yes and No.

The DDO works when you have a lead guard like Wall, Bledsoe, Knight, Teague, Fox; all guys who were really hard to stay in front of. Supplement it with athletic wings and long bouncy big men.

But when you don't have guards that can get in the paint at will it becomes very stagnant and we would be better off running a lot of off ball screens. The Harrison's were the exception bc they were physically imposing and could bully their way to the paint and JAmes Young was athletic enough to also penetrate and finish.

the SEC has figured out our horrid offense. Look at the difference in scores and watch the struggle we go through when we play those teams. Out of conference teams not so much, unless they are very good teams

There are a lot of good teams in the SEC. You're basically saying we score more against bad teams than good teams. What a shock.

We are seeing sagging zones where teams don't guard our centers. It's 5 vs 4 many times. No low post entries.

We aren’t as skilled as in the past, but the schedule definitely is a factor. This is, by far, the toughest regular season we’ve had since Cal has been here. I don’t think many of us have properly calibrated its impact on our record.

I wish we would press and trap.more often. We do this when we get down.and we get engaged and good things happen.

Turnovers and three point rate. No, the three pointer hasn't been a huge part of the offense under Cal. But we are almost dead last this year.

Pair that with not taking care of the ball, and a top 20 offense becomes top 50-ish.

We also take more bad shots, aka, pseudo-turnovers. One that stands out from Saturday was a step back jumper by Knox that led directly to a runout corner 3. Pushed the lead from 6 to 9 early in the second half, I think?

That was after we had been pounding the ball inside and cutting into the lead. Just a lot more dumb play than usual, to be honest.

It doesn't work without shooters, too easy to pack the lane and deny drives. This offense is player friendly, they don't have many concepts to learn, which is vital because he's playing mostly freshman every year. But, like Alabama in football, it works if you have superior talent.
