Is it going to be Go or No Go for launch?

Actually had a tornado warning down there a couple hours ago but it looks like the sky is clearing. Wonder when the next launch window would be and how long the current one will be open? Heard them interview Homer Hickman earlier which was cool. I loved October Sky. It’s time for the US to lead and leave the world in space flight again. Blows my mind that if things go as planned in four years we’ll be back on the moon again, some 52 years since man was last there.

Any bets on what Elon Musk’s blood pressure is right about now? Though you have be a pretty cool customer just to make this kind of bet on yourself/your people.

I saw this morning where he was quoted as saying "If this goes wrong, it's all my fault." So yeah, I'd say he's on pins and needles right now.

Doesn't sound like they're going to launch. That last weather update wasn't very promising. I think final decision in 2 minutes.

Scrubbed until 2:22 Central Saturday.

Gotta wonder why Dish doesn't have NASA TV in HD.

Turned out a lot better than it could have, but Apollo 12 got struck by lightning twice right after liftoff.

I was in our conference room at my part-time retirement job in HSV. We had it on the big screen. We all agreed it was the right decision to scrub... And I'm the only one old enough to have worked on Apollo, after my 1966 graduation from MSU. One lightning strike will 17 the H out of electronics. JMO.

It was setting up to be a really cool day. I am glad they pushed it to the next window. We need this to go without a hitch. SpaceX is pretty awesome. Hope they get past this milestone and move on to the moon, Mars, an asteroid, and beyond. America, hell yeah.

It really is amazing what a private citizen has done. People thought he was a joke when he proposed this idea 12-15 years ago. Not having bureaucracy in the way and entities grabbing for tax dollars gives him a lot more bang for his buck.

And I agree, there is a ton riding on this and they have to get it right. And that’s not to say NASA was ever in a position where they didnt have to get it right. But China currently has a rover on the moon and a satellite orbiting the moon. If we don’t regain our foothold in space then all of our communication and other satellites are at risk. And talk about crippling a nation without firing a shot.

And people may say who cares, why spend money on stuff we have already done. Well without the space program we probably aren’t posting on SPS right now. And unlike Nafoom people would actually miss SPS. DS would still probably be watching a 12” black-and-white with rabbit ears.

I don’t want to diminish what SpaceX has become, but it’s important to remember that they have received a lot of funding from NASA. The major difference between Dragon and previous Spaceflight programs is that the contractor is not only building the hardware, but also operating it and taking a leading role in development. Not a bad thing if you ask me, but it’s still largely funded via tax dollars.

Why does China

Have a rover on our moon?

I wasn’t saying China has no right to have a rover on the moon. But the mere act of doing so is what causes technology to boom. That technology blooms into all kinds of uses for good and bad. Us keeping spurs our innovation to keep pace. Those uses can not be imagined or foretold. I used present day computing as an example.

Take Sputnik, we were in a Cold War with the USSR. If they could put a satellite into it orbit what else could they do? Could they put a Nuclear warhead up there. Even had they not been able to, had we sat by then there is no “Star Wars” that Reagan used to pretty much spend the USSR into submission ending the Cold War.

China has already has a stated goal of becoming THE ONE superpower on Earth. The technology they derive from their activities of going to and exploring the moon may very well make that goal much more likely. Us keeping up will enhance our space capabilities which will be important in ensuring the protection of all the satellites that keep our current way of life possible. If we can’t protect our satellites enabling communication, enabling our television broadcast, and our military capabilities then we are royalty screwed. We all have GPS on our phones as a byproduct of the US military having satellites in space. Plus the simple fact that we are keeping up is a deterrent to them using the technology they glean from going to the moon for nefarious actions that may disable those very satellites. As I said, disabling a nation without ever firing a shot.

What if the big step forward that happened at Kitty Hawk happened in Berlin instead and we decided not to keep up, 20 years later a Hitler comes along and has that technology at his disposal and dominates the world. You have to look way beyond the fact that they have a rover up there. And it’s not being scared. We didn’t develop the hydrogen bomb because we were scared. We did because it was the next step up as the USSR had matched our weapon capabilities. If you can’t wrap your head around that then I hate it for you.
