I think that K likes to give each player his moment in the sun to announce, and I like that strategy. Good for the kids. But I wonder how they decide who announces when?

And what happens to these players when they do announce? Do they immediately stop taking classes and focus on training and conditioning? Just curious.

Oh, and agreed, Carter is gone. Sorry to see him go out in the E8 game the way he did, but he gave us effort and desire and a ton of highlights. Well done young man!

This right here. His announcement will come soon....maybe even today.

I think he's gone, but I wouldn't be shocked if he returns. Currently, he's projected in that 5-10 range. Only, not really. He's probably one of the 10 best players in the draft, but he could fall lower than that. This draft has several players who more closely fit the current NBA ideal in that they are longer and more athletic than Carter, or they have more/better perimeter skills than Carter.
.
Current mocks rank the players sort of in a vacuum, without taking team needs into question. Carter is probably a better player than any of the wings/guards available this year (outside of Doncic from Europe). But there are teams at the top of the lottery that need guards and wings more than they need a guy whose upside is that of Al Horford. And I don't mean to disparage either Carter or Horford. But if a team needs a wing or a guard, they aren't going to draft a potential Horford if they've got OK bigs already. It is one thing to draft a Bagley or Ayton even if your primary need is not a big. Possibly even Bamba or Jackson or that big from TAMU. Those guys are long, elite athletes with greater upside than Carter. But if I needed a guard, I'd be hard pressed to justify taking Carter over that Bama guard for instance.
.
So, Carter could "drop." I think he's a lottery pick, regardless, this year. But he MIGHT be worried about the draft lottery positioning and ending up on a team in a bad situation for his skillset. Now, IDK if he ever moves into the top 5 of a draft, because next year's draft has at least 3 long, versatile wings that can play anywhere from PG to PF, and I think the NBA will be salivating over them. But the upcoming big man class has 1 quality member, and that is Bol Bol, whose size/athleticism/defensive prowess slots him above Carter. But Carter might come back. I doubt it, but I'd understand.

I know he's gone but Carter is the one that I really wish we could watch one more year.

For sure. Add Carter and Duke would have an ideal roster for next year. As a bonus for Carter, he would get to showcase himself as the lone big in an NBA oriented team.

Him plus a shooter and next year's roster would be great.

Would love for him to come back. But don't want him to, unless it's for the right reasons - another year in college, winning a championship. If he came back to potentially improve his draft position, that rarely happens and would prefer he just go now. Which I'm 90% sure is the plan.

I think a lot of folks are underestimating how good Duke's shooters will be next year. I think CR and RJ will be more than capable. I bet they are pushing 40% by March, even if their year long averages are slightly lower due to relative struggles early in the season. With AOC and Goldie as the nominal perimeter backups, I don't see perimeter shooting as the problem that some here seem to.
.
Yes, we were poor shooters this past year. But, I think CR and RJ will be fine, and I sort of expect TJ to be a very capable shooter immediately.

Gotta agree with you. Trent and Grayson were our only shooters last year, with grayson being pretty boom or bust in that category. I think that the combo of Tre, RJ, and Cam will be just fine shooting the ball. All should have their inconsistencies but they should be more than serviceable. Plus there won't be two bigs clogging up the lane. Zion is really the only question mark but at the end of the day I doubt defenses sag off of him and let him get a full head of steam.

Of course, the ideal scenario is that zion picks up his shooting percentage from three and we become unstoppable. But we'll see.

If Zion can hit 25% from 3 he's dangerous. As you say, no one is going to sag off him, given how unclogged our lane will be.
.
I've been relentlessly bringing this up, and I'll do it again: We don't need to worry about our O next year. Defense (particularly in the paint and at the rim) and rebounding are our main worries next year. If we can defend the rim/paint, we have enough long athletes to harass perimeter players. After that, it is about rebounding (and I'm begging to suspect that Cam will rebound at a quality PF level).
.
We are going to score points next year. We've got two quality distributors in Cam and TJ, and two elite finishers in Zion and RJ. With Cam and TJ being quality scorers in their own right.
.
But, while I think we'll be very good on O, IDK if we'll be overwhelming on O to the point we can overcome any defensive liabilities. As such, we have got to play M2M at a high enough level to win titles.

I have word from a very good unnamed source that Carter is thinking about staying but that he [the unnamed source] has his own even better unnamed source that says Carter is leaving. Thing is, that source has his EVEN BETTER source that also says he leaves. Supposedly that guy actually knows Carter and Carter says he has a source that says he [Carter] definitely leaving.

That’s the one I want back the most too. But let’s not get a case of the Kevin Knox’s.. Let’s be real, he’s gone.

I'm hearing Vernon may reclassify and come to Duke. I'd rather have Carter back, but that would be nice too.

This whole reclassification thing is interesting to me. This would be what, the 3rd player in 3 or 4 years to do this and come to Duke? If it helps us win, I am all for it. I guess it's not much different than HS kids going to academies instead of regular old HS's for their senior year. Sign of the times I guess
