Cal just announced that he will not participate in NIL transfer bidding wars.

Cal doesn't write checks. Mitch does.

Cal's apparently been told what his cap is.

He's not going to be able to compete for top flight transfers.

Is he planning an exit strategy? He might negotiate a smaller but still substantial buyout and head for the door like Tubby did.

Remember, Wright just retired, likely because he saw this coming and wanted his legacy preserved. So did K and Roy. Can Cal work through the frustration he's about to endure?

EDIT: It's been brought to my attention that the NIL is not paid or authorized by the University, so why would Cal even mention this?

As a coach if you wanted to participate in the bidding wars I’d t think you worked question if your fanbase and supporting businesses had the biggest war chest.

I don't think Mitch writes NIL checks either. I'm guessing there's a department that solicits and negotiates NIL deals with local businesses on behalf of individual players and potential players. Seems like that would set the budget.

Announced his retirement right after the season! That may have been Jay Wright, I get them confused

So UK is a small market team.

Who knew.

Duke's been kicking our *** since Cal told Nike to pound sand. Now everyone will kick our asses.

I was driving on the old Pennyrile Pkwy yesterday and didn't see Cal anywhere. Also didn't see him in Madisonville or Hopkinsville. He's definitely gone! /s/

The school, Mitch, doesn't write NIL checks. Those are done by third parties. I'm sure Cal is aware of what is possible based on his conversations with boosters, but Mitch nor Cal has any ability to limit or cap NIL contracts between student athletes and businesses.

Then why did Cal say it? Making it public can ONLY HURT recruiting.

Maybe Cal is trying to shift blame away from himself. This smacks of a shot across the bow at his bosses.

Not sure you understand how NIL works.

You do realize that NIL money does not come from the Universities, right? Neither Mitch nor Cal “write checks”, and neither have any control over what the “cap” is. Indeed, the universities themselves aren’t even supposed to be involved with the negotiation of NIL deals.

I wasn't aware he said there is a cap on NIL contracts for anyone? Can you show me where he said that?

Cal is trying to formulate an exit strategy that preserves his legacy and places the blame for his currently increasing incompetence and failures on something other than himself. NIL problems are as good as anything.
I look for this year to be his last.
As an aside, if Cal can burn the program to the ground as he leaves, whoever his replacement is, will naturally struggle initially, which will make Cal’s record look better by comparison.

So Cal saying he wasn't going to negotiate is following the rules, but why are players calling up demanding guarantees? Are some schools meeting those demands?

Didn't we just get done paying Sharpe, Oscar, Dontaie, TyTy? That was all NIL money from private businesses, right?
My comment was about “biggest” war chest. Our players will get money. Will they be on the higher end of the scale nationally? Early on everyone is testing what it would take dollar wise. As this continues the major players will start to distance themselves.

Maybe we feel Oscar was taken care of in a big way. Is that as high as the UK ecosystem can go? Would that be done for multiple top tier players on the same team? UK supporters are willing but is the means there to keep up?

Some people here are saying that UK can't afford to pay the money that other school markets can pay. This seems to be a fluid situation now that Cal has made this public statement and given the fact that this statement can only hurt recruiting, I'm trying to figure out why Cal would say it on radio.

I don't think anyone said that. I'm saying that I don't think Mitch determines how much gets spent. It comes down to how much a business will spend to use a particular players name, image, or likeness.
Who negotiates deals in the NBA? It's not the coach. If CBB is now about negotiating player salaries, why expect the coach to handle the money? Cal has had the name on the jersey and next level success to recruit with. We got out recruited mostly by cheaters. If the new dynamic is basically the pro model the negotiating will be out of the coaches hands.

But businesses want winners

No, they don’t. They want to pay someone that will get your attention. If Big O pitches a Lexington restaurant during a UK broadcast, the advertiser knows that 341,000 Lexingtonians are listening intently. Doesn’t matter what the team’s record is at that moment.

Cal made it sound like HE IS the one who negotiates these deals.

Is it because Cal hasn't been happy with the results of the portal? What has the portal helped us with so far?
Yes, we have OS, Wheeler & Toppin to show for it currently, but what has it done for us in March?

And it should only be about March.

If that's where this NIL thing is going, he won't be for long. The whole model will change.

So far it looks like instead of being on the cutting edge, Cal is lagging behind.

Either he's lost his touch or he's been told to stay out of the negotiating.

Cal did not say he “wasn’t going to negotiate”, instead he said he wasn’t interested in recruiting transfer portal guys who were only interested in NIL as part of the transfer. These mean different things.

As I understand, the universities are only allowed to provide advice to kids as to potential NIL opportunities. (i.e. giving the names of businesses that would be interested, etc.). It’s then on the kid and his agent to go negotiate the deal on their own. The universities themselves are not supposed to have any direct involvement in the negotiating process, or the setting of a price, and they sure as hell can’t be the ones paying the money.

I corrected my earlier statement. Cal said he isn't interested, which isn't a very definitive statement about what the rules are. I wonder why he said it that way. It's as if he was acknowledging that he has some sort of power to negotiate and was choosing not to use it. If that's not true, then why say it out loud?

Or he prefers to recruit players who want to play at Kentucky and for him first and foremost. If players are now showing up with a price tag, well, that changes everything, and being a top notch recruiter will be as useful in college as it is in the NBA. and being Kentucky will mean nothing.

I think you are conflating two different points. Cal said he is not interested in a transfer who brings up NIL money and would not get into bidding wars for transfers. I take that to mean if a transfer immediately is looking for money, then they would not be here for the right reasons so Cal doesn't want them. He doesn't seem to think that type of player will be a good team player and therefore benefit UK. In other words, if a player is only chasing money, then he will probably not be a good candidate to help your team win.

UK is a small market team. I have said this from the beginning of NIL. NIL is a risky proposition for UK because if large market teams can organize the economic resources of their communities, teams like UK won't be able to compete. I will say this, basketball doesn't require a large amount of players so it is feasible we could field very good basketball teams even as a small market team. But when you put together football and baseball, we would be hard pressed to compete with large market schools like UCLA if they can manage to organize the economic resources at their disposal. It is yet to be determined if large market teams can find enough interest in their programs to take advantage of their potential economic resources. Time will tell.

Why does he say half the weird quotes he’s had the last few years? Who knows, the guy sometimes just seems to be randomly saying **** out his *** nowadays. He’ll probably say something next month that totally contradicts what he said today.

But, if I had to guess, I suspect maybe he’s trying to set up an excuse for not getting the transfers we wanted. He’s pointing at something else for the fans to blame instead of himself.

Everything you just said is completely disproved by Sharpe.

If he isn't interested in players only out for money, then why did he take Sharpe?

His behavior here is INCONSISTENT.

First of all, the university doesn't write these kids a check, right? Second, I thought the whole NIL was exactly how it was initialed, Name, Image and Likeness? I thought businesses and other advertising agencies were the ones paying these kids for that very reason, based upon their popularity? What am I missing?
