College GameDay in Iowa City, Caitlin Clark picking games and launching shoes, a 28th straight Kinnick sellout, and a top-15 Hawkeye team riding the high of the Big House miracle. The stage was set for a generational win. Then the Buckeyes showed up and reminded everyone of their $60M NIL budget. OSU 31-14. They outgained us 484 to 238 and held the ball for 38 minutes to Iowa's 22. That's not a close game that slipped away. That's a small budget team playing college football's highest paid roster in history.

Moulton Was Never a Legit RB1. IowaLaw has surprisingly taken heat on this board throughout the season for noting the obvious: Kamari Moulton is serviceable, but he isn't a Big 10 RB1. Today was more of the same. 11 carries, 27 yards (2.5 ypc). Through three Power 4 games, the Hawks are averaging 2.6 yards per carry. Sure, the O-line got manhandled and nobody is running through 8 Buckeyes in the box. But why did 2,000 yard rusher LJ Phillips only get 4 carries for 16 yards (4.0 per carry)? Future star Jackson got just 1 carry.

Hank Brown Had His Chance...Heck Can Do Better. Brown started the season rated the 18th best starting QB in the Big 10. Kirk opted against spending a dime of NIL money to bring in a QB instead of a game manager. As a result, Brown went just 12 of 27 on mostly check down passes. That's an awful completion percentage but we've come to expect that and the check downs at Iowa. But what's unacceptable is the randying around. Brown threw an awful interception, several near ints, took horrible sacks holding the ball too long, and a lost fumble inside his own 15 yard line. When he wasn't overthrowing a wide-open Tony Diaz near midfield, he was completing check downs thrown to the wrong shoulder so the receivers couldn't catch in stride. Watching Hecklinski come in cold and go 5 for 5 for 67 yards makes me wonder if he's the guy he was at the spring scrimmage. Surely he deserves a shot against Washington.

Zero Push. Zero Holes, Zero Brains. Watch the replays and the story is the same on almost every run: the line of scrimmage moves backward, not forward. Ohio State consistently won the battle up front, and the backs were getting hit at or near the line. The outside zone scheme depends on the line getting movement and creating cutback lanes. Of the few cutback lanes I actually saw out there, Moulton was either too slow to hit them or was arm tackled by the first guy who touched him. Aside from the blocking, how many uncharacteristic penalties can this OL continue to rack up each game?

Hawthorn Leads a Stout Run Defense and Pass Rush. Ohio State and their 2 future NFL running backs ran it 47 times yet averaged just 3.4 yards per carry. The defense sacked Sayin 4 times and got a huge stop on 4th down. Hawthorn, Iowa's only full-sized DL, had 2.5 tackles for a loss and seems to be the lone bright spot on Iowa's DL. Lutmer too was all over the place, tallying 11 tackles in the first half before getting hurt early in the 3rd quarter. Let's hope it was just a cramp and nothing serious.

Lutmer was poor again today imo. Or at least not up to hype he has received. And he was only credited with 7 tackles. Only 2 tackles for Buffington though. Ouch.

We had multiple chances to make this a game and again our offense fails us.

You cannot settle for FG against a team like OSU, they are going to score. It was only a 2score deficit to begin the second half and Iowa forced OSU into two 3&Outs

but Iowa also did the same thing and then it was over….

Teams are not afraid of Iowa going over the top, and so they play Iowa defense against the offense.

stop the run. Keep ball in front of you. Pressure QB

Really just tired of the Iowa / Kirk way to try and even compete. Trying to force every game like Michigan.

defense played well until it broke

You lost me at Moulton is not a D1 rb. Just ridiculous, especially when you then reference a tiny sample size for Phillips and come to the conclusion he is better. Moulton has been very good for Iowa, and while you point out how slow he is to the cutback you miss the fact that the blocking scheme requires the lineman to wash down the tackles. If there is a DL or LB consistently sitting in the outback lane things get more difficult. The running game break down is much bigger than a rb. This OL needs a Linderbaum in my opinion.

Okay. But look at Northwestern's running back and what he--and his O-line--did to Penn State Friday night. We haven't seen enough of Phillips, but I'd sure like to see more. And McNeil and Jackson need more carries. Lester used almost NO misdirection yesterday, and precious little all season, yet he says his massive Shanahan playbook is wide open because "for the first time at Iowa" he "has all the horses to use the whole playbook." Really? Then do it. Misdirection is always a great strategy, but it's especially vital when you have a young and, so far, ineffective O-line. Misdirection can neutralize the speed, aggressiveness, and experience of any opponent, but especially one with the talent of an Ohio State. I'd say Lester has been the second biggest disappointment on this offense. KF's choice of Brown would be No. 1. All quarterbacks are equal, KF says, but what he doesn't say is that some quarterbacks are more equal than others.

You sure about that, Duddy?

ESPN says otherwise. And even if your totally incorrect stats were correct, you're saying Lutmer played poorly by only having "7" tackles in the first half before leaving the game with an injury? To everyone else, 7 tackles in a half are all-American numbers. Lutmer had 11 in a half. And Buffington didn't have 2 tackles, he had 6.

@HawkinAnk74 - in what way has Moulton been "very good for Iowa," exactly?

As Iowa's starter last year, Moulton finished 15th in the Big 10 in yards per carry. He did so despite running behind the #1 offensive line in the entire country. lol If you consider that "very good," I can't imagine how you viewed Caleb Johnson. Objectively, Moulton's play last year was considered bottom of the Big 10. It would be interesting to see the yards per carry of all starting RBs who ran behind Joe Moore Award winning OLs in the history of the award. I'd venture to guess Moulton had the worst of all time. I know when Iowa won the Joe Moore Award in 2017, Akrum Wadley averaged 6.4 yards per carry. When Army won the award in 2024, their RB averaged 6 yards per carry.

This year, Moulton was anointed starter again, despite a stable of talent in the RB room. Is his "starter" status based on merit or "experience?" Under Ferentz, I think we all know the answer to that.

And what has Mouton done in 2026 with the privilege of being RB1 on a Top 20 program known for its running game and OL? He has gained just 71 yards on 24 carries in two Big 10 games (averaging just 3 yards per carry...last among Big 10 starters. His longest run in conference play...just 8 yards!). I'm sorry but take off your black and gold glasses...he's objectively an RB2 or RB3 on virtually any other Power 4 program.

The stats don't lie, but man it sure felt like their two RBs were gashing us for more yardage and they were always falling forward...so props to our D.

I really have no idea why guys like Jackson and McNeal can't get a few touches to mix things up...

Our linebackers are not making many plays beyond just basic plays on the ball, tackling backs and receivers.

Montgomery had a nice play or two where he flew in and cut a back down for either a loss or no gain, but outside of that I really don't remember that group doing anything that truly stood out.

Our best teams always have playmaking LBs, and are the farthest thing from being "quiet" on the field.

Iowa shouldn't "quietly" have a LB rack up double digit tackles.

The lack of shots down field against these top teams is a Kirk staple. Lester is just the latest OC who has to fall in line.

I get that defenses like Ohio State make it difficult to throw deep without a very high risk for an INT, but if you don't test them at all, they will adjust accordingly and make life even more impossible.

And I get that is Kirk's plan. Hope the game is close and save your one or two big deep passes for late when they least expect it.......................it's a one-off ploy that isn't sustainable game to game, and it's not something you can do (or in case it's what we don't do) if you want to compete for championships, let alone win them.

He's probably looking at the stats on the Google page for the game.

There's a pretty big discrepancy between ESPN and the Google recap on the defensive stats for some reason.

Their QB being credited for 9 rushes for -1 yards helped Iowa a lot in the statistical rushing defense category. Bo Jackson Jr and Jakoby Jackson each had 70 yards.

The MSU Big10 championship game is exactly how Kirk wants to play.

rope a dope….keep it close, then throw the haymaker

unfortunately our defense can’t throw that knockout punch as the other team always seems to get that score to win

Yeah, saw that too - 2nd and 5 was a nice luxury for their OC. Realistically, we needed turnovers or stupid personal fouls on their part - which was not going to happen. Their RBs are really taught well to protect the Rock and Sayin is a very smart/good QB.😎

Lutmer is just starting to look like a quicker Quinn Schulte, that is about it. Runs up and touches the pile quite a bit, nowhere to be seen in coverage unless trailing a receiver. The secondary stinks overall. The scheme is out-dated vs decent teams with aggressive O's. See KF's record vs Brohm at Purdue. And of course, OhioSt and other competent O's.
