The Hawks win a 20-19 barn burner against an undefeated Wolverine squad at Michigan Stadium! With the Folgeris hitting his last second 3 pointer to knock off #1 seed Florida in the NCAA tourney + this win in the Big House, Hawk fans have experienced a decade's worth of joy in just a few short months. It doesn't get much better than this. What a win!

Hawks Win DESPITE Same ol' Ultra Conservative Coaching. Kirk set the Ferentzian tone on first drive. The Hawks drove 30 yards and crossed midfield with ease. But then, inexplicably, on 4th and inches from Michigan's 45 yard line, the Hawks lined up to go for it. Then Kirk pissed down his leg, called timeout, and opted to punt the ball away, sending a message to his offense that he doesn't trust them. That first drive turned out to be the best drive of the entire first half. The even bigger head scratcher came at the end of the game. The Hawks with the ball in Michigan territory down 5. There were just 3 minutes to go and the Hawks faced 4th and 6. 99.9% of coaches go for it in that situation. But conservative Kirk sends out his walk-on first year kicker to kick a 51 yarder that...best case scenario, would cut Michigan's 5 point lead to 2 and give Michigan the ball back with 3 minutes to play and the lead. In other words, it would accomplish nothing. Make or miss the kick, Iowa would still need Michigan to go 3 and out then drive down and score again in 3 minutes.

Welcome to the Big 10, Jaylen Watson. Watson was a high potential recruit that a lot of Hawk fans have been waiting to see. What a way to get your first Big 10 start. At the Big House against a team that produces NFL caliber WR talent year in and year out. Watson held his own matching up against Michigan's best WRs on each down. While Michigan's QB seemingly couldn't miss (he was the #1 recruit in the entire nation a few years back), Watson was right there in the mix on a lot of passes and had 3 deflections when targeted. Another year in the system and Watson could be all-Big 10.

Let It Sink In: the Hawks Will Be Saddled With Another Prototypical Mediocre QB For the Next 2 Years. At 6'4, 214 lbs and slow as molasses, Kirk and crew recruited yet another Spencer Petras to lead the Hawks for the next two years. It's been painful to watch the assembly line of 6'4 QBs at Iowa who valued limited turnovers, few big plays, and an inability to make plays with his legs. Since Brown is now firmly entrenched, that's the way it's going to stay. To be clear, Brown hasn't thrown an INT all season, which is fantastic. He went 21/35 for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns. While 227 yards isnt much at most schools (Michigan's QB threw for 280 yards on 7 fewer pass attempts), we need to put it into context. It had been THREE long years since a Hawkeye QB threw for 200 yards (Deacon Hill vs. Rutgers). Highly paid Gronk and McNamara never managed to cross the lowly 200 yrd threshold. Hopefully Brown gains some confidence from that last drive and realizes he doesn't need to check down on every pass play.

Red Zone Defense Rises to the Occasion. The biggest difference in the game is that Michigan scored touchdowns on only one of four red-zone trips. Deshaun Lee intercepted his high school teammate Underwood near the end zone, and Buffington absolutely stuffed them on a huge fourth-down stop. Had they simply kicked field goals it would be game over.

Moulton Still Isn't a Big 10 Caliber RB 1. IowaLaw said it all year last year and he's saying it again. Moulton runs hard and can get you 2 or 3 yards when needed, but he just doesn't have the break away speed, the strength to break tackles, or the vision to see holes that any other Big 10 starting tailback possesses. 13 rushes for 44 yards (3.4 yards per carry) after he laid an egg against Iowa State 15 rushes for 57 yards (3.8 yards per carry). The staff needs to stop randying around and reconsider some of their ineffective playing time decisions at RB like they did on their botched punt returner decision when they started the season with a 6'4 hybrid tight end returning punts. LJ Phillips ran for 2,000 yards last year...if he's 90% healthy, he needs to be getting touches. McNeil and Braeden Jackson look the part...give them a shot. But Moulton's 3.4 yards per carry behind an all-Big 10 OLine just won't get it done when Iowa lacks a passing attack.

Discipline Beats Talent. At the end of the day, Michigan can have all their 5 star athletes and their massive talent advantage. But when you're committing 8 penalties for 75 yards, including the dumbest personal foul in Big 10 history on Iowa's last drive, you're allowing inferior opponents to stay in games. Great deal for Iowa...brutal for Michigan fans.

You have been fairly spot on this year, but this one is pretty bad. Hank Brown is nothing like Spencer Petras and Moulton very much is a legitimate P4 back. I’m not going to take the time to address all your points about Brown and Moulton because they are so f#cking stupid.

The decision to punt on the very first iowa drive was the correct one. If the game was at Iowa maybe and iirc it was more than inches. But on the road with over 100,000 dont give them a short field and a ton of momentum. Hank is not the best at the QB sneak and Mich Dee is stout. Yeah the old coaches adage is take a chance early in the game because if it fails you have a lot of time to work past it but not on the road.

Moulton is a damn good back and can only do as much as the OLIne creates for him. Hard to run into 15 bodies at the LOS. And Brown throws a really decent or better ball, pretty strong arm, accurate, he goes through his progressions and takes what the defense gives him. so you are wrong again, might he regress, might he get tight and nervous, maybe but he didnt show it yesterday

Great work Law! Huge win, who would have thought .. this board and every tavern Herk had KF fired with 2 minutes to go, again.

Run game is awful, Oline fat and slow, and pass coverege is brutal aside that gift 'look what I found pick' on the goalline with a wide open receiver. Saftey's will get picked on all day vs OhioSt unless they figure it out in a hurry.
And a big thank you! Michigan is already running their OC out of town, him and Lester were awful all game long except that final play and of course, those well executed tip plays.
Keep up the good work Law

The staff needs to reconsider some of their playing time decisions just like they did on their botched punt returner decision.

Moulton not a starting BIG caliber RB?

I don't think there's any analytics you can point to that would derive going for it on 4th and 6 99.9% of the time. That was a very un-objective comment

At first I was bitching about not going for it. Later i looked back on that again and I can see where he was coming from. He had confidence in the his kicker having the leg for the distance. He also has confidence to trust the defense into a 3 and out (which they actually did anyway) but the missed fg gave Michigan plus field position....call it about 15 yards?? If you play it out then Iowas gets the ball back at around the 25 or so, meaning a 45 yd drive and you are in FG position for the win. I guess another way of thinking about it was that KF did not trust the offense...hate to think that might have crossed his mind.

That's ridiculous. Most analytics actually say going for it is the way to go. In the end it doesn't matter because even though we missed the kick Michigan played it so conservatively and just handed the ball back to Iowa figuring their defense with our offense was a win for them. And history would show that we probably would not make enough plays but kudos to Hank and our team.

Trolls like Slaw really must not have much to do if they're willing to spend time writing that much crap.

BTW, Slaw, you must have missed the Music City Bowl last season, because Grono threw for 212. There's other BS, too, but I have better things to do than list it all here.
LOL @HMB Trumpet - were you under the impression that the Hawks played a Big 10 opponent in the Music City Bowl? Sorry you're so confused about a very basic premise.

@RagnarLothbrok - I explained why Brown is similar to Petras. Instead of saying "no he's not" and running away, have you tried to support your position? It's not complicated and it's how everyone above 8 yrs old has discussions.

@Hawk4Ever! - agreed. It's wildly amusing that but for a random series of flukes that all had to happen perfectly on that last drive (i.e. the deflected fastball caught by an out of bounds player, the roughness penalty that saved us on 4th and long, the random injury that allowed Iowa one extra play, and Brown's best completion of the season on the last play), Hawk fans would have been rightfully disillusioned with the ultra conservative coaching and the way the team played. Critiques right and left calling for the coaching staff's heads. But we make the last second catch and now suddenly the staff is beyond reproach. The real world doesn't work that way. The Hawks didn't score an offensive point until the 4th quarter. The defense made Michigan's running QB look like Tom Brady back there averaging 10 yards per completion.

@Titanhawk - the analytics say otherwise. On 4th down with 2 minutes and change to go and down by 5, you go for it and try to win the game. You don't send a walk-on first year player kicking in his first ever road game to kick a 51 yard clutch kick. NFL kickers miss half of those. If Kirk has that little faith in his offense, the ultra conservative option in that scenario would be to punt and hope for a 3 and out then get the ball back in decent field position...not at our own 9 yard line.

Let's be real here fellas. Kirk isn't considering analytics when making these decisions. The only thing he's thinking is that he expects the offense to fail and the defense to succeed 99% of the time in critical situations.

That last drive showed where Kirk needs to evolve in his thinking on offense before he walks off into the sunset. He got forced into hiring a new offensive coordinator who has improved the passing game. Kirk still wants to play offense in a tight window.

We can move the ball via the air when we need to. Throw the ball further on early downs so we can attack with our running game the traditional bread and butter of our offense.

NFL kickers make about 73% from 50+.

And I don't believe college analytics to be derived or applied as accurately as in the NFL

Law is a dumbass, full of himself. Hank Brown played well. First road game in front of 111,000. He has good mobility and was cool as a cucumber in the second half. His back shoulder throw on the last play was absolutely perfect under the toughest of conditions. How anyone can be critical of his play after this game is beyond me. I am excited about our qb situation going forward.

You have been fairly spot on this year, but this one is pretty bad. Hank Brown is nothing like Spencer Petras and Moulton very much is a legitimate P4 back. I’m not going to take the time to address all your points about Brown and Moulton because they are so f#cking stupid.
@RagnarLothbrok , @uihawk82 @Hawksfor3 - you guys seemed so sure that IowaLaw was wrong about Moulton not being a legit RB1 at the Big 10 level. You want to admit just how wrong you are? IowaLaw has been pointing out Moulton's obvious lack of breakaway speed and tackle breaking ability for two years.

I think more likely that Iowa's OLine is not as strong as we thought they would be in run blocking. They arent getting much push and the blocking schemes against too many defenders are maybe too slow to open holes. I really havent seen much of any holes for any of the running backs to hit against isu, mich or osu.

Moulton shows plenty of swerve and cutting ability to be a very good back if you put him behind some of the better run blocking lines this year. It could be the hawks will end up 7-5 because we cant consistently run the ball.
