Not saying it was the right decision (the result showed it was not) but the fact the first kick was way short doesn't mean that he does not have the leg to make it. When a kicker hears the whistle but gets the free 'practice' shot at a long FG, many times they will attempt a 'wind kick'. Not to put everything they have into the 'practice' kick, but just to get the ball up into the air to see if/how the wind affects it.
Yep, Stephen’s has the leg to kick that far, but the trajectory has to be so low that such kicks often get blocked. Also, Penn State got close to blocking a couple extra points and Iowa’s other field goal. They had dudes really firing off the edge.

In the history of college football, how many times has a fourth-year kicker suddenly bested his career-long FG by 11 yards? I'm going to say zero.

I can see letting Stevens have a shot at it from 57, 58 - hell, maybe even 60 yards. Running him out there for a 66-yarder was just plain dumb.

Kirk himself got emotional post game talking about how he really put his team in a bad position with that dumb decision.

With that said, career longs and what a kicker is capable of doing aren’t the same thing. He has a monster leg and no one knows his limits like the coaches.

I mean, I guess the coaches didn't know either, because it was blocked.

So... there have been other cases of a 4th-year kicker suddenly topping his career-long FG by 11 yards?

Stevens is a very good kicker, but I would think his limits are pretty well-established at this point.

You don’t think he has hit from that distance in practice or at least been close? I wouldn’t define limits as being established only during games.

I would think every kicker on the planet has made longer FGs in practice than in games - with no defense, and taking as long as they want to get the ball in the air. Unfortunately, this wasn't a free kick after a fair catch. There were actually players on the other side of the ball.

But this is a fascinating conversation. It seems to go something like, "Kirk admitted it was a stupid move. But you have some nerve saying it was stupid before Kirk said it was stupid!!!"

I watched him at open practices b4 this season and in several pre-game warmups throughout this season make field goal attempts from approx 65 yards. However, there was nobody trying to block those tries. 🥴

Doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have made it that far, if not blocked. 🤔
But the guy said that the coaches "know"
They clearly did not know, they thought, there is a huge difference.

They thought he could kick it that far.

Fans, not stadium size.

Rose bowl holds like 90k...but there are about 30k UCLA fans.
Well you might want to go to tv ratings, or website clicks or literally any other metric.

There are myriad things to criticize the Big 10 for. Fan interest and number of fans per school is not one of them.

1. If they had amazing fan bases those fans from other schools would not be coming here.

2. Rutgers, PU, NW, MD, UCLA, MInny, Indiana (until last year), Iowa, USC, MSU, Illinois, gosh is there more...don't sniff sellouts and no one is watching THOSE teams on TV, they might be watching them when they are playing NU and OSU and Oregon and Michigan.

No one is running to the TV for that big NW vs Purdue game.

🏈 2024 Average Home Attendance by Conference

ConferenceAvg. Attendance per Home Game*Notes & Highlights
SEC (Southeastern)~ 80,024The highest among the major conferences.
Big Ten (Big Ten)~ 65,518Strong figure — among the top two.
Big 12 (Big 12)~ 48,135Lower than the top two Power-conferences.
ACC (Atlantic Coast)~ 45,786Also solid, but behind the Big Ten and SEC.
Mountain West (MW)~ 25,600 (approx)Significantly lower — Group of 5 level. TechSideline.com+3Nevada Sports Net+3D1.ticker | A College.town Property+3
American Athletic (AAC)~ 39,000+? (est)Group of 5, moderate attendance. D1.ticker | A College.town Property+1
*Note: The exact averages for some conferences (especially Group of 5) are approximate, since full round-ups weren’t always provided.

🔍 Key Take‐aways

  • The Big Ten’s ~65.5 k average is very good. It clearly outpaces many Group of 5 leagues and only trails the SEC among the Power conferences.
  • The claim that the Big Ten “does not average many fans per game” doesn’t hold up — when compared to nearly all other conferences, it’s among the best.
  • Only the SEC outdraws it significantly in terms of average home attendance.
  • The Big 12 and ACC, while respectable, are trailing the Big Ten in this metric for 2024.
  • The drop-off to the Mountain West and other Group of 5 leagues is substantial — showing the gap in fan draw.

He can kick that far…assuming it’s not blocked. What’s so hard to understand about this? Anyway, it was a bad decision, particularly at that time of the game, when Iowa had all the momentum and could have went into the half with the lead.
