She needs a touch of Bobby Knight in her personality. Act less like an assistant coach and more like a head coach.
These WBB refs are terrible on every level. JJ needed to get in their face, maybe get a T, and maybe just maybe some calls would have evened out. A 300+ body roaming around the paint area is going to cause some damage/fouls. She can't jump so her advantage is in her girth. Excessive height is an advantage. Excessive width is not.

Women refs suck, they let their feelings get involved. Like when crooks went down and they stopped an iowa fast break chance to see if she was alright. That was utter bullcrap. And they are more influenced by the crowd imo

They do get whipped up by the home crowd. Many anticipation calls. Example...They love to make the Eddie Hightower charge calls. Self gratification

I was pretty unimpressed by Iowas coaching against ISU.
Crooks killed us on the block. The way you stop her is to deny her from getting the ball. And the way you deny her from getting the ball is with a double team. Iowa should have double teamed her from the get go with one defender in front and another in back. Our defense made it way too easy for her to get the ball.

Still on the fence a bit on Jan. But IMO missed easy layups and missed free-throws lost this game.
Not sure what the deal is with the free throw shooting. I know that CC22 and Kate aren't here anymore, but we've really regressed. Hannah is an obvious one, and she's REALLY struggling shooting the ball from anywhere especially from the line, but it seems contagious at the charity stripe right now.

Having Feurbach, Stuelke, and McCabe all on the floor together is just a huge offensive challenge, and especially when Heiden had to sit. Hopefully Jan can figure it out
Yep. Been saying that since before the first game. No one in that group of three starting players can get their own shot. If CCW hadn't gone off in the first half we'd have been out of the game by halftime.

Everyone shot awful??? Better check the box score. That couldn't be further from the truth. The team shot almost 40% from 3. Only Hannah and Deal had bad shooting nights. The rest were fine or didn't shoot enough to matter.
Deal 0-4
Stremlow 1-3
Hays 1-3
Stuelke 5-14

I stand corrected. Whatever, dude. Timing matters. Shot selection matters. Airballs matter. Nevermind missing layups. The team went nearly 7 minutes in a single quarter without scoring. You have to shoot better if you want to win against good competition.

IMHO only McCabe, Houston, and ChitChat were ready to play or not intimidated last night (including coaching staff).

Ava found out right away the way the refs were letting Crooks do whatever, there was nothing she could do with her. I don't know that she was intimidated as much as frustrated. The first half Jan put Deal in for about 1 minute twice, and then brought Kylie right back. I'm not sure how you can expect anyone to get comfortable like that. In the second she played a few more and had 2 or 3 nice takes with good mid range jumpers. Didn't go in, BUT they were good shots and within the offense. Even with limited playing time she rarely forces it. Her basketball IQ is way higher then Kylies, just as Houstons is way higher than Hannahs

Did some of you not see Stremlow and Deal in last night's game? They were pretty awful. If Iowa was going to hang with ISU last night, it wasn't going to be with the bench players. Just wasn't happening last night.

Awful shooting isn't going to win many games, and that was pretty much everyone last night, but cool heads are needed if you are going to find a way back in it after going down by 17 in the second half.

How would someone judge a player going in for 45-60 seconds (twice) and then pulling them, try to access their contribution?

Considering it was #11 vs #10 (basically even), I can’t imagine being “proud” because “we were in it until the end.”

Come on now.

And women’s basketball is a terrible product in general. There is no less than 5 airballs or near-airballs inside 10 feet per contest. HS couldn’t hit water from a boat - How does that happen!? She is 6’2”!
I know hundreds of 6'2 dudes that can't walk and chew gum at the same time, let alone make basketball moves and score.

Give Hannah a break, she is going to be a key cog on what will be a very good Iowa team this year.

Well she might be playing better right now. She's certainly much more dynamic offensively and is actually rebounding at a higher rate so far this year. The only problem is that she's only 5'11 and is going to struggle guarding much bigger players down low, but statistically she's equal or better in nearly every way.
Houston appears to have absolutely fabulous HANDS.

She’s in her 4th year and still can’t make anything NOT directly under the rim.

But sure, I’ll give her a break.

As long as this loss becomes a learning experience by both the players and coaches I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it. It is a tough game to go into Hilton and win with a young team. The refs giving Crooks special whistle treatment most of the time on both ends of the floor is the thing that annoyed me the most.

For someone who has admitted to not even liking WBB you sure do spend a lot of time on the WBB board. What a miserable POS you are.
I continue to put them on the TV in spurts.

As a big Iowa fan, it’s hard not to even though you know it’s not a good product.

Watched every football game when Bri Bri was running the O. Disgusting but hard to turn away.

Deal didn't get enough time to say she played terrible

Jan should have told them to call traveling on her.

Exactly. 6 minutes when it comes in 4 or 5 separate substitutions is ridiculous. How would any young player get in any kind of flow on either end of the floor. As I've said before Deal doesn't force herself into the action, like someone like ERod. She lets the game come to her. We've seen her make solid growth in the games she played 18-20 minutes and obviously the 17 point game when she played 30 minutes. I'd love to see what her points scored/minutes played is against Kylies stats, and shes a 6th year player.

I’ve read a lot of comments in regard to defending Crooks, First off she is a really tough matchup for likely 95% of the teams she will face, She is very good and ISU has a nice roster to make it tough to simply focus on her, Where I really think Iowa missed the boat was attacking her on offense and put some stress on her defensively, They basically let her camp out a few feet from the basket and didn’t challenge her and make her move nearly enough, She played 36 minutes vs her normal approx 26 minutes a game,IMO she was allowed to “rest” far too much on defense.

Since when is calling WBB “unwatchable” constructive criticism?

Yeah It’d be nice for the Iowa WBB board to at least be a bubble for people who enjoy the sport and don’t actively hate on it. There’s plenty of other spaces for that crap and it gets old fast here.

I’m with Hawk2. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If something is unwatchable to me, I don’t watch it. I don’t feel the need to share my opinion with those who find it watchable and enjoyable. We each have our own ideas about what is good basketball and enjoyable to watch. If you prefer the game played above the rim, knock yourself out watching the men’s game. If you are ok with the game played below the rim then the women’s game may be your choice. I’m in agreement with the late, great John Wooden who preferred the woman’s game stating that was the way the game was supposed to be played. I enjoy men’s ball too but I’m all in with the Hawkeyes women. Whether others find it watchable or not I love it. I feel they attempt to play the team game the way Coach Wooden felt it should be played. Go Hawks!!!
