if he bet his team to WIN there should be no repercussion

that should be legal just like it is in boxing/horse racing

And arm wrestling. See Lincoln Hawks.
Stallone was asked about that movie and he said "I kept saying "no", I don't want to do it, it isn't a good movie...and they kept calling back, offering more and more money, finally I said "Sure, why not, no one is gonna see it anyway". Hahaha

It is such a bad (good) movie.

I can still remember thinking that I was super into arm wrestling after that movie came out.

I want to agree but the other things you need to consider...let's say he laid a nice chunk of change for the Clones to win, do you see how it could lead him to make some stupid decisions during the game that could cost the team? Ignore a coaches play call, take a bigger risk downfield than he should because he's thinking about that 3 grand he has on the line...ignoring an injury he may have told coach about but now he doesnt..because he doesn't want to come out...further hurting his teams chances....just a lot of things that could lead to screwing over the program, coaches, teamates....etc.

Good point, I never thought of that

Very good and rational take.

One can win and still do things to tweak the spread though. However I doubt Iowa State was on too many favored games :)

Betting the opposition to cover should be punishable by loss of appendage + lifetime ban + jail
I mean...not if I happen to win money on that game! Haha

Years ago, I think it was Boston College playing on a Thursday night and it was around Halloween and of course me and my friends bet the game and we sat there watching it and it seemed sooooo weird, like BC was just trying to **** up...

Turns out that some info came out that 13 BC players bet on the game, 2 against their own team and BC lost to Cuse...

I can still remember watching that game and it seemed soooooooo clear that dudes were tanking.

Also, I took BC and lost.

I think the chances of playing dumber...in the name of "trying harder" is to big a risk to allow this. It comes across as a very selfish move by somebody who has questionable integrity for doing it in the first place....
I get it

You love rules/regulation and hate freedom. Those who use freedom as they please are of “questionable integrity”.

You’re not alone

I, personally, would love it if every member of NU football played/coached each week as if their last penny was on the line

If they were all in on it together, fine. But when one guy...the most important one on the team, does something he knows is 1000% against the rules, without his teams knowledge...especially something as serious as wagering on games...he's a grade A idiot....I doubt this helps him get his degree on time, or any addl NIL cash...and future employers polly aren't gonna flock to him now either....can State pull his scholly and give hime the boot?? ...so setting aside if this should be allowed...a kid just pretty much threw his future away here. For a football bet. I hate to see that and it wasn't worth it...and he had it made in the shade if he just doesnt do this.

Your initial premise is not what I’m talking about

It should be legal and thus would (and should) become commonplace

I agree this kid is stupid (obv, goes to isu) and should not have done this since the draconian big brother pilgrim rules are currently in place

Betting on your own games should be legal?

I don’t have issue with the players betting on other events or football, I think betting on your own games crosses a line.

Betting TO WIN your own games - in every sport - should be legal.

Just like boxing/horse racing.

That’s it.

(Imagine the nba bets my god)

Well thought out reason against it. But said player wouldn’t be the only player betting. If it was allowed

Looks like he has the worlds stupidest attorney. He admitted he did it, but he said the rules were wrong. He thought the NCAA should police that and not anyone else. That’s not going to help. I’m guessing there will be more athletes not playing later as well as others are implicated. Idiots.

I feel for any program that has negative crap show up just before the season, putting a damper on your fall expectations.

Us with Coach Wager... ISU with Dekkers... the whole disgusting mess at Northwestern. Ugh...

...but it isn't allowed, and that is made very clear to the kids. If and when that changes...then have at it. Until then, total grade A fvcking idiot that just put his entire team in a bad place.

Also....does anyone else wonder what the percentage of players like that QB, would be willing to take a dive in exchange for cash, if he was willing to do this in the firat place? I'm betting it is pretty high. Really odd that anyone would be OK with this behavior with the rules as they are written now.

Nobody is okay with it given the 1700s witch trial rules that are in place

It seems from your posting that you don't know much about gambling. There are too many variables involved. Football betting is nothing like horse racing or boxing. Betting only on your team? As an underdog? Straight up to win? Betting on your team as a three point favorite? 10 point favorite? Betting on your team to win the 1st quarter? Score more than 31 1/2 points as a team, et al. It would be far easier to just make it illegal to bet at all.

This may have been said by now, but if he bets on his team as a six point favorite and that QB has the ball up three. Coach calls an RPO "run option only" to run down the clock to about zero and instead the QB "misunderstands" and passes it downfield because he wants to cover. Incomplete pass, gotta punt and the other team winds up forcing overtime. That's just one scenario.

Looks like he threw everything away for about $3K in wagers...used his parents to place the bets to hide his identity (again showing he knew beyond the shadow of a doubt it was wrong) and then tried to tamper with the evidence (again showing he knew he was in deep doo doo)....I will be shocked if it doesn't come out that he bet against his team in the Oklahoma game (the game which is being named publicly as one he bet on). I feel sorry for the guy at this point...all over $3K in wagers. Yikes.

Own team ML TO WIN

That’s it.

Very clear. No exceptions.
