I'm a little confused so this is honestly a question and not being disingenuous...

1. How is Hudson a 1 seed at 4-4?
2. Why are there so many teams that are sub .500?
3. Why are playoffs starting so early? Is it because there are more schools?

I honestly only follow 5A because that's where my school is at... no shade at the smaller schools.

A few years ago they expanded the field from top 2 of each district to top 4. In all classes except A there's only 6 teams per district, so mathematically, they're going to have to take teams with losing records.

They seed them by district wins and not overall wins. They play 5 district games and 3 non district. Hudson went 4-1 in their district, and went 0-3 in their non district. Their district is probably the weakest in their class.

I know it’s based on district records, but no teams with overall 3-5 or 2-6 records should be in the playoffs. Embarrassing.
Eh. It's hard either way. There's multiple issues at play here.

Surface level, while they've gone back to 32 for smaller classes after the controversial first time they started it back in 2008, it does give more teams the opportunity to play in the postseason, even if they're gonna get waxed by the higher seeds.

I also think there was enough disagreement either from the Association's side or possibly even from the coaches' side about making it 24 teams and giving 1 seeds a BYE.

I understand the traditional argument is that it should be 16 teams despite all the consternation that format has wrought over the years, however there's also something else that needs to be kept in mind.

And that's the Association and Union foolishly continuing to tinker with the overall sports calendar, which affects all sports, particularly in regards to start dates and numbers of games they can cram into a season.

Right now, from 8-man to 2A, they only play EIGHT regular season games, which honestly is kind of ridiculous when you compare it to other states around the country.

I think 2A gets the short end of the stick in that regard, because those schools are in a good-enough place roster-wise that they don't need to be shortchanged a game, and you could even argue that they could go back down to 16 teams for their postseason.

But for 8M through 1A, and particularly Class A and 8-Man, there's growing issues with roster sizes and schools basically having to outright cancel or forfeit their seasons, which not only affects those schools but any other schools that were paired with those teams in a district.

For some schools, they're playing 3 or even 4 non-district games, as they picked up an extra game or two to make up for the forfeited district game.

The other thing the 32 team playoff does is that the 1st Rd effectively acts as that "9th game" for teams (at least that would be the Association's argument). And there's also still the rule that teams that didn't make the playoffs can schedule a 9th game against one another, even though it is rather difficult to do with short notice.

It's also worth noting that after 3A-5A finish their 9th regular season game next week, and begin the postseason the following week, every Class will be onto their Round of 16.

Now, if you wanna talk about real issues to complain about, I'd want more transparency on how exactly the Association goes about pairing the teams in the tournament (at least in the smaller classes).

Yes, they have a copy and paste detailed explanation for how the district finish is decided, with a heavy emphasis on the 17 pt tiebreaker differential. But they are only vague on how all of that will be used to pair teams up in the 1st Rd and going forward.

I get that they do this intentionally so that teams can't get an idea of where they might be heading so they can scout early (which is honestly kind of stupid, but both the Association and Union clearly disagree), but there doesn't seem to be much discernible rhyme or reason to their pairings outside of pairing based on district finish with tiebreakers used to determine host sites if necessary.

The big complaint for years used to be geography being a primary factor in postseason football pairings, and I think it's safe to say that the State has mostly done away with that in football, when many matchups are taking place with teams traveling well over 2 hours and some even traveling over 3 hours.

There also didn't seem to be much adherence to the 17 pt differential, at least in the 8 man pairings, outside of, if you had a higher positive number (+11 vs +7), you would host a game (against who, well that's for the State to decide at their whim, apparently).

Heck there's even a team with 2 district losses hosting a game, while a team with 1 district loss is on the road, even though their layout stated that teams with the fewest district losses would have the chance to host a 1st Rd game...............and I can't really tell you it was because of geography because the traveling team has to go a little over 2 hours to face their opponent.

That would be my complaint. No more secrecy when it comes to how you pair these teams up, Association..........

Four 3-5 teams in the Class A playoffs
There are clear tiers at the high school level right now in the state of Iowa, and not as much competition in that second tier right below the best teams.

I'd been going over some historical records recently because I cover HS football, and some years ago it was common to see a ton of 6-3, 5-4, 4-5 records with some 7-2 records mixed in, and only the handful of best teams going 8-1 or 9-0.

Fast-forward 20, 30+ years later and there's way more 8 or 9-0 seasons and 1 loss seasons.....and more 4-4 and 3-5 seasons, with fewer seasons in that 6 or 7 win range depending on which Class they're in.

Basically, long story short, the parity gap is not as close as some people would like to think.

1 loss Bellevue has to play on the road while Alburnette, who Bellevue beat, gets a home game.
Looks like Bellevue drew the short stick in a 3-way tie for the district title, while Alburnett finished second in their district.

Seven football classes is beyond ridiculous!!!!

Just the usual $$$ grab from the IHSAA.

Get as many post season games as possible and charge that $10 per person to watch little Johnny stand on the sideline for 2 hours.
Girl's union is equally as bad in volleyball and basketball.
When my daughters played in the 90s, there were TWO classes.

Expanding to a 5A Class was necessary because of the monopolization by the rich DSM suburbs. The sheer numbers game alone warranted the addition.

With that said, I do think there's a way you could cut it back to 6 classes, and that would require axing Class A. Another poster suggested this a while back, but you can expand the BEDS enrollment requirement for 8-man to 125 to try to entice some of the smaller A teams to make the transition. The rest would get folded into Class 1A and the numbers would trickle up from there.

A few other changes I would make is push 5A and 4A to 42 teams, and bring 3A to 48. 2A would bump up to 56 teams and 1A would take the rest still wanting to play 11-man football. So if 8-Man gets, let's say, 6 more schools to drop down, that would give them 75 total (not discounting any schools that had to cancel their seasons this past year), and leave 66 for Class 1A.

2A-5A would have a 16 team playoff, while 1A and 8-Man are 32 teams.

5A- 42
4A- next 42
3A- next 48
2A- next 56
1A- remaining 11 man schools
8 Man- all remaining schools that qualify under the enrollment cut line, and wish to stay/transition to 8-Man football.

The current system is fine because it gives teams something to look forward to.
It gives any halfway decent or even marginal team something to play for as the long season drones on.
Too many solid teams were left out in the old system.
Minnesota does it right where (almost) every team is in the playoffs.

Its really sad to see participation numbers drop, not just in football but in basketball etc. I remember being at CR Jefferson in the mid-60's when they had 100 out in grades 10-12. I think it was last year they had to forfiet a Soph game because of lack of numbers. The days of one neighborhood playing another in baseball, football, basketball etc are long gone unfortunately.

5A this year should be pretty darn competitive.

No undefeated teams and all the big DM metro teams are capable of beating each other.

My question is if SC East is legit?

SC East beat bound power rated teams #14 Heelan and #28 Johnston and took care of the the rest of their schedule. 2 quality wins.

The real fraud in 5A is IC West. They have some big names on their schedule, but those schools are down overall compared to where they have been in recent years. West's best win is vs #147 PV who will likely finish 5-4.

I remember when I was in hs (over 20 years ago now) that a second loss could mean no postseason.

Isn't there still one week left in the season, and all the playoff spots are determined?
There's still Week 9 of the regular season for Class 3A-5A. All lower classes only play 8 regular season games now, and are starting playoffs this coming Friday, as they have an extra round.

Been talk of two classes of 8-man.

enrollment and participation is dropping so fast I think we will see schools combine just to field a team soon.
I just don't know what a second 8-Man class will do to solve the issues. Remsen, St. Mary's is currently the smallest school in the state and they won 3 of the past 5 8-Man titles...........and you want to shrink that field of competition for them?

Unless the State mandates that schools below a reformed cut line HAVE to go to 8-man football, there's not much else they can do besides increasing the BEDS enrollment line and "encouraging" teams to make the drop.

LeMars Gehlen is one program that has held out for years despite being easily within the line to make the drop to 8-Man. They simply don't want to drop, and won't until participation numbers force them to (and even then, they may be stubborn enough that they'll just do what some other programs, including 11-player teams, have done, and forfeit/cancel their seasons).

The other thing you mentioned is schools combining, and while that is always an option, the thing programs have to be careful about is finding and combining with schools that will fit their needs. If Remsen, St. Mary's and Kingsley-Pierson wanted to combine, that would push them over the BEDS limit and they would have to go back up to Class A (unless the Association changed the limit). R-SM would need to find someone nearby that is also small enough.......and would be willing to combine with a program that is merely down in terms of upper classmen, and is traditionally one of the best small schools in the state........and would still keep them in 8-Man football.

If certain programs that are struggling to field teams just wanted to combine with other nearby districts and are fine with stepping into those programs that already play 11-man, that option is always there. One example I'm familiar with is the Whiting school district. For decades, they have bounced around with area districts. Prior to becoming one of the first 6 schools to re-introduce 8-Man football to the State of Iowa in 1998, they were combined with Sloan, Westwood in Class 2A. They dropped to 8-Man as a singular school district for a number of years before declining enrollment/participation forced them to become sort of a nomad district. For a while they were with nearby West Monona, Onawa. I think they might've even gone back to Sloan, Westwood for a bit. Then they dropped down to join a few other school districts combining with Siouxland Christian, which is where they currently reside, and unfortunately even with being a combined program, they still had to forfeit this past season.

And that's not even getting into all the challenges that come with schools sharing/combining for athletics (the primary one being the extra travel).

The unfortunate reality is there is no easy fix for the declining enrollment of rural Iowa schools and the participation numbers for sports at these school districts.

And now I'm going to attempt to give you an idea of what the First Round matchups could look like, as of now, going into the final week of play for Class 3A-5A. It looks like based on past records, 5A is pretty straight forward with the 1/16, 8/9 matchups. But the Association, in all their wisdom, wants to stay random as f*** for every other class, so your guess is as good as mine as far as potential matchups go for 3A and 4A...............but let's give it a whirl! :D

(Home team listed first)
Class 5A-
#1 WDM Dowling vs #16 Ankeny Centennial
#8 Cedar Falls vs #9 Dallas Center-Grimes

#4 Iowa City, Liberty vs #13 Norwalk
#5 Johnston vs #12 Waterloo West

#3 Sioux City East vs #14 Indianola
#6 Ankeny vs #11 Cedar Rapids, Prairie

#2 Waukee Northwest vs #15 Southeast Polk
#7 WDM, Valley vs #10 Iowa City, West

Class 4A-
#1 Cedar Rapids Xavier vs #16 Mason City
#9 Adel-DeSoto-Minburn vs #8 Fort Dodge

#2 North Polk vs #15 Council Bluffs, Lewis Central
#7 Newton vs #12 North Scott, Eldridge

#4 Sergeant Bluff-Luton vs #14 LeMars
*#5 Pella vs #10 Decorah

#6 Western Dubuque, Epworth vs #13 Davenport North
*#3 Gilbert vs #11 Glenwood

*- currently would be district runner-up

Class 3A-
#1 West Delaware, Manchester vs #16 Humboldt
#14 Atlantic vs #10 Central DeWitt

#3 Solon vs #15 Williamsburg
#6 Dubuque Wahlert vs #12 Benton Community

#4 Sioux City, Bishop Heelan vs #13 Winterset
*#5 Sioux Center vs #8 Des Moines Christian

#7 Nevada vs #11 Mount Pleasant
*#2 Clear Lake vs #9 Independence

*- currently would be district runner-up

Seven football classes is beyond ridiculous!!!!

Just the usual $$$ grab from the IHSAA.

Get as many post season games as possible and charge that $10 per person to watch little Johnny stand on the sideline for 2 hours.
Girl's union is equally as bad in volleyball and basketball.
When my daughters played in the 90s, there were TWO classes.
Have you seen how many classes there are in Texas? Six classes divided into two divisions and that does count the private school classes which are separate from public school classes. 4 teams from each of 32 divisions. Their playoffs do not finish until just before Christmas.

Looks like Bellevue drew the short stick in a 3-way tie for the district title, while Alburnett finished second in their district.
17 point rule

Had Bellevue not got manhandled by West Branch at home against WB last week, the Comets would have been the #1 seed. It was a "winner take all" game. The Bears came to play.

Pretty nice turnaround for them from 2024. Especially considering they've had 4 head coaches in 4 years.
