This is still very early so take it for what it’s worth (which may not be much yet). But here are our total yards/game broken down between conference and non-conference.

3 non-con games: 406.3
2 SEC games: 462

Again very small sample and most teams have only played a couple of SEC games, but we are currently 2nd in the SEC in total offense in conference games. Unfortunately we are also only 6th in scoring per game, which isn’t terrible. But it’s still a little frustrating that we move the ball better than we score at the moment.

We only had one three and out in the A&M and LSU games combined- have we ever been able to say that before against quality SEC West defensive talent? It’ll be interesting to track our progress through the season.

I think we start really seeing some progress in terms of scoring the second half of the season, after we get past Bama. The DL talent will go down a good bit. A&M, LSU, and Bama are probably three of the top five or so DLs in the SEC.

Seems our difficulties in the red zone have been from rushing, not passing. So lately Rogers is taking it upon himself to throw medium-length passes to the endzone.

Those defenses were no slouches either. I’m looking forward to how they do agains the teams after Bama. They could really get in a groove by the end of the year.

This “we suck in the red zone” narrative is too broad and really not true. We are tied for 6th place in RZ TD% in the SEC- and we have played the hardest schedule in the league to this point, per Sagarin. We are actually really good at scoring from the 10-20 yard range. On the whole, red zone offense has been pretty solid.

Where we struggle right now is from inside the 5-10 yard line. To be specific, the problem is really more of a goal line offense issue. I don’t know enough about football schematics to say what exactly needs to be done to fix it, but it would be nice to punch it in some from inside the five.

This is an important clarification - I think everyone broadly complaining about this is referring to goal line, rather than red zone.

Guys in the booth actually had a decent take for once during TAMU game saying the OL of a Leach offense sucks at goal line because they are in pass pro 99% of there time are are not accustomed to having to get a good push.

Until our QB is experienced enough to call checks and recognize D on the goal line, we are going to struggle to pass from inside the 5. It takes a ARod, TB12, Brees level of command of the offense to be super effective if you are committed to passing down there.

It would be nice if we could just line up a goal line formation a few times - if nothing else to put it on film.

You have multiple times responded to my posts with comments about “me always coming here just to let you know I don’t pull for you.” So, I assumed it offended you, since you’ve brought it up multiple times. If that was an incorrect assumption, then my bad. But you have on multiple occasions taken offense to my being on the board, which I just find amusing, to be candid. If I talked **** and bashed MSU, I’d get it. But I don’t. I try to be fair, while also acknowledging that I of course of bias.

I agree. I don’t think we win or anything crazy but I think it’s a great chance to see what an improving offense can do against the best and I know that we will get a very good look at exactly how good our D can be. That Bama offense is impressive .

I don't want to look past Alabama and Vanderbilt, but let's assume we split those games. Kentucky is the swing game for the season in opinion. And at the moment, I like the matchup.

Kentucky is more of a rushing offense than passing offense:
-236 rushing yards/game (2nd in SEC)
-122.7 passing yards/game (13th)
-111.42 passer rating (11th)

They are also better at stopping the run:
-111 rushing yards allowed/game (4th in SEC)
-221 passing yards allowed/game (8th)
-134.41 passer rating allowed (6th)

We know that we are a passing offense:
-357.7 passing yards per game (1st in SEC)
-141.49 passer rating (7th)
-55.67 rushing yards per game (13th)

We are also better at stopping the run:
- 86.33 rushing yards allowed/game (3rd in SEC)
- 239.3 passing yards allowed/game (9th)
- 133.79 passer rating allowed (4th)

They are good on defense, but our offensive strength is not their defensive strength. And their offensive strength is our defensive strength. We'll see how this changes over the next three weeks.

I also like being at home. The last road team to win in the series was the #1 team in the country. And the last time Kentucky won in Starkville was Croom's last season. They have an open date before, but we play in Nashville the week before, so it shouldn't be a huge advantage.
