Listening to the post game podcast it's been rumoured that Greg wanted to fire Robb Smith on Monday but Zinn told him no. Any thoughts on this if it really happened?

If this is true, I have to give tremendous credit to Keli Zinn for holding Greg accountable - something had hasn’t happened since 2.0.

he wants to fire Smith as a scapegoat, but the big problem here was hiring him in the first place after Greg has already fired him twice. That is all on Schiano.

I hope Keli challenges him with future staff decisions. A staff that has all 3 of his kids on already.

Funny. I read it as we are too cheap to fire these guys. This staff screams low budget.
Yeah.. remember when Pernetti wanted to hire Cristobal but Barchi said no budget for it.. so we got Flood.

THAT was the time to invest in the program. No need to pay the old coach because you fired him. We didn't even have a good conference situation but, clearly, we had been courting the Big Ten. And we say "No Budget" because local media were giving us flak for athletic spending as if there were any chance in hell that the entire athletic department could be expense-neutral.

Not anymore. Real leaders are now in charge.
Tate is in charge. He hired Zinn. And she was very involved in football at LSU. Schiano will still run football, but they days of him doing anything he wants are over.

And he needs somebody to hold him accountable.

And if she builds a credible NIL program in the next year, she will gain more and more power

Just listened. Don’t know if I believe that. Guys source is a guy from Purdue. No real connections with Schiano tree and Purdue. And Purdue is not really the place that anyone goes for sources related to football. I would believe Kelli wanted him gone and Schiano fought to keep him with limited role.

Same one I linked? The guy is long time Rutgers fan going back to the 1970s. Richie heard the same rumor, AFAIK, not from a Purdue source, unless I misheard the comment.

Looks like I misheard the source. And it glitched didn’t see or hear Richie’s comments. Interesting if true. Wonder if Kelli is making Greg stew in the bad decisions he made with having Robb return? I know I had to wear hires that didn’t work out until contract ran its course.

Their exit was good timing. LSU fans are not happy right now.

If true it's fv*king beyond stupid by her and only one an idiot would make. You don't want disgruntled coaches around the players. You get them out of there as quickly as possible. You simply take over the defense and elevate someone from the support staff to help out as an assistant position coach.

Or you minimize their playcalling duties and take over their responsibilities yourself for the balance of the season as Greg has probably done with Smith.
Also as far money spent on the Football Staff, Rutgers increased the $ spending by 30% vs. last season. We have 5th highest paid OC in the B1G. The Staff isn’t low budget as one poster says.

Schiano hires and fires whomever he wants.
That could have changed with Zinn heading the Athletic Department now and not wanting to pay Smith's buyout when Schiano could just keep Robb in a reduced role, with the co DC title, but not the responsibility that comes with it.
Zinn might feel that keeping Smith might help the team more in a different role on Schiano's staff instead of just paying him off and getting nothing in return.. I wouldn't be surprised if Robb was a position coach with the coDC title now
Greg picks who he wants, the school approves buyouts.

Agree. Seems absurd that an AD would get involved in a staff decision during a season that’s circling the drain. It’s up to the HC to determine his staff, and this sort of meddling would be an issue for next HC candidates.

It’s a rumor, so who knows? The fact is that GS hired Smith once again and if true (who knows?) he wants to fire him now? The defense is awful and in the end that lands on the HC, who made a bad decision. GS .. by all accounts is a defensive coach and frankly the defense has sucked for the last 2 seasons. I don’t dislike Greg Schiano , he is smart and articulate but the results this year (year 6) stink. I highly doubt they get to 6-6. I will root for that but I think it is unlikely.

well.. I always look for the logic, the rationale, which would make something seem logical if looked at from a certain perspective.

Now.. this is totally unfounded speculation.. but what if the discussion was not just "I want to fire X", but I want to fire X and Y, Z. And it was the Y and/or Z that were objectionable? In that case both sides could be correct.. GS in firing DC and Zinn for saying, "No, I cannot agree to that.. not without some more thought at least.." or maybe.. "we cannot afford that".

It has to be something other than ignorance or stupidity, right? Surely there must have been something more to it.

Hmmm.. another possibility... Zinn and Tate want Schiano out so they can pick their own replacement.. someone familiar to them like how tate selected Zinn.. no exec search for him.. but GS still has support among donors... and if they can keep the bad DC doing bad things, maybe this season will be such a disaster that that support would disappear.

Could it be something that Machiavellian?

On the offensive side, there has at least been improvement. On the defensive side, it's certainly low budget in terms of results.

Don't think there is a Subway on Easton Ave or in New Brunswick anymore. Will have to go to Greasy Tony's or Little Teddy's! :D

Wow that looks right. Google showing only one is at Student Center! It wasn't there in my day.

Must have shut down between 1.0 and 2.0, when the QB rumor mill died down.

Now that Dodd is on staff I hope he got a picture there before it went down!

There used to be a Blimpie in the train station that was pretty good. Wow, there is a Blimpie in Highlands, NJ.

I would think that someone who came from an SEC program would have no problem pulling the plug on a coach. It looks they're going to give him just enough rope.

IIRC last time I set foot in a Blimpie was the one on Washington St during Hoboken St Patty's during GS 1.0. Apparently there are at least 3 in JC though. May have to order or go there for nostalgia.

Interesting fact I saw. RU has 108 coaches/football staff. 3 of Gregs sons are included as well as 3 special assistants to the head coach, which are former coaches who worked for him, and a chief of staff. The most in the Big. By comparison Oregon in the same coaches/football staff has 67 total and Ohio State has 71. Rutgers actually has more staff than players. I don't know what these people are paid but thats a lot of staff. It's also interesting looking at the job titles.
