Interesting Ash statement

In his interview, Mike asked him what the most important thing Urban told him before leaving and his response was (paraphrasing)"he told me to build a staff where everyone was in total alignment. Said to hire a younger, hungry staff, that could gel and stay away from a bunch of old HC's who have been doing things there way forever." Thought that was interesting as many on the board prefer the Maryland model. Time will tell who was right.

the same urban meyer who just hired greg schiano?

You do understand rutgers and ohio state are different types of programs. Urban doesnt have the same issues rutgers does and vice versa. Urban had built up lesser known programs. Id take his advice.

If he is getting this type of advice then we are back to Shea III.
You get the coach that can win whether he is young, old, straight, gay or trans.

UM sort of sounds a bit hypocritical. Right? There is something to be said when hiring experienced staff which Urban does quite often.

Before calling "Bull ****" on UM about his advice, it would be interesting to see how he built his staffs at Bowling Green and Utah. When he was a young head coach did he (paraphrasing)"he told me to build a staff where everyone was in total alignment. Said to hire a younger, hungry staff, that could gel and stay away from a bunch of old HC's who have been doing things there way forever." Or did he build a staff of more experienced coaches?

Only Shafer is a coordinator, the former HC thing at Maryland could turn out to be short term fixes. Walt Bell was Durkin's best hire and he's like 32.

How you can't be excited about the new staff, especially at this stage of the game, surprises me with some of the comments on here. I'd like to see some realistic expectations some people had after Ash was hired and see if they really are realistic.

Page 4 of the attached link has Meyer's first staff at Bowling Green. The staff is relatively young with 4-5 coaches in their early to mid 30's. At least 3 went on to become head coaches

Actually I understand it quite well.
Wouldnt appear so.

As the program you coach for becomes more established and prestigious the dynamics and needs change. As your own prestige as a coach elevate, the dynamics change again.

Right now RU is near bottom of B1G East, and CA is a first year head coach. What He and the program needs are different from a Perennial powerhouse program with endless budgets.

I agree with your point. But, if you hire the wrong assistant, set in his ways and stubborn/ strong-minded, there is a very real chance that the team comes unglued. The reason Ash refers to alignment is to avoid this pitfall; it's smart.

To your point about Meyer, yes, he hires experienced coaches. But it would be career suicide for an assistant to stray from what Meyer is trying to do.

Trap- there are less then a handful of seasoned coaches who would even think they are close to UM's stature at this point. He could hire 5 ex P5 HC's and have no doubt they would follow his vision.
You really can't see the difference. He is giving a young man very good advice on how to start out.

Nice find. I looked up the Bowling Green staff before posting, but didn't go digging for their coaching pedigrees. So, on the surface, it looks like Urban walked the talk he had with C.A.
