If you saw my post in reply to those lamenting that Cam couldn’t do it in the Big 10, it appeared that he was short on all his shots , all front rim never back rim. I said he had to just use his legs a little more and make a little adjustment . Well he clearly made it. If he makes just 1 more three against Temple , Miami or Seton Hall in those games , then Rutgers has 2 more wins and we are 15-2. If Refs don’t mess up at Ohio State we are 16-1. Think about that for a minute. Just 3 more points , just 1 three more by Cam. Crazy the difference between wins and losses at this level.
Dare I say he was a little out of shape to start the season? As you stated, a lot of short misses in the first few games as well as having difficulty defending 1 v 1.... The Temple game comes to mind with that. He could have been slightly banged up to start the season too. It's clear now, he's in game day shape. On the ball defense has improved significantly. Kudos Cam!

False. I was actually patient with him and said let it play out after his rough start vs real competition. He shot a combined 27% from the floor vs shu, miami, temple and indiana.

But thats irrelevant. Hes a big shot maker. Cant create his own shot but LETHAL catch and shoot shooter. In the past end of game was just let geo dribble around for 25 seconds then shoot, last night we ran a play to get cam a catch and shoot. Beautiful.

It was definitely a valid concern since there was a clear correlation with his struggles and the increase in defensive competition. It was too small of a sample size to completely write him off and luckily he more than figured it out.

You could just see a completely different level of confidence during the Wake Forest game and it's only gone up since then.

I wasn’t really overly concerned. When you step up in competition it takes a little bit for things to slow down and figure it out. It’s a natural progression.

Some of those games Mulcahy wasn't back/at full strength so Spencer had to handle the ball more. When he can play off ball and have Mulcahy find him he is at his best

Let me throw out a comparison if I may

Peter Kiss

Came here also considered an outside sharpshooter
First game out of the gate he hit a bunch of threes and we thought we had struck gold, write ups all about him

As the season wore on, competition got tougher….. not so much worked anymore

A lot of fans were deceived early on

Now
With Cam, same expectation, opposite result…. Shaky start, then he got going
Kiss was not a sharpshooter. He shot 27% from 3 before transferring to Rutgers. Not in the same uninverse as Spencer

Kaplan, from Wikipedia
Basketball career
In his Rutgers career, he averaged 16.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, with a 18.2 field goal percentage and an 88.8 free throw percentage (the second-highest in school history). His . 927 free throw percentage in 1989-90 is the highest in Rutgers history.
Soon to be broken by Cam!

totally agree. He's not a ball handler. He can't get to the rim consistently but man can he shoot

Got to be in your 70’s to have seen Lloyd live. He and Valvano were an amazing pair. Lloyd set NIT record for points scored in tournament- later broken by others with benefit of more than 4 games and 3 point line
Those of us from the Class of 1970 were freshmen during Lloyd and Valvano's senior season. Lloyd went 19 for 19 against NYU at the "old" Garden which was a big chunk of what became a 60 FT streak. Then during RU's run in the NIT - our first-ever post-season game - he scored 129 points in 4 games, a streak that lasted for many years, as hoquat63 mentioned, even after the NIT went to five and six games for its final four.

And for people who might not have been impressed by the NIT bid, back then (1967) only 23 teams played in the NCAA and 14 were in the NIT. Only one team per conference could play in the NCAA and a second place finisher could play in the NIT.

I thought he was promoted as such before coming in
Had a 4 for 4 three pointers versus the Hall shortly before coming aboard
might have been misleading overall

He then hit a number of them first RU game

I don't know where we would be without him.
He needs to shoot more and the team needs to create more opportunities for him. Driving and drawing fouls would be an added bonus.

True. And BTW, Paul is now 41% from 3 this season.
Lost in all of Cam’s great shooting is his passing and Paul will find himself open when the double comes to Cam from here on out and he has to pull the trigger and shoot the 3. Or pump fake and drive to the hole for a shot , a lob to Cliff or get fouled. Has to be a staple in the game whenever other team overplays Cam. Cam had 3-5 more assists last night if our guys hit wide open shots.

My fresh year as well. Went to three of the four NIT games at the Garden. Only missed the loss Southrn IL when some guy named Frazier killed us - never heard much about him later.

More proof that you need to wait way longer than expected to make sense of college basketball players/teams each year. January is usually when the truth comes out.
Exactly. So many people want to react so quick. You really don’t what kind of team you have until Jan/Feb.

Not out of shape. Just needed to find his role with the team. It took 10 or so games to figure that out.

This guy is the best transfer portal pick up of 2022, and the best Rutgers Transfer ever
Keith Hughes was a pretty good transfer as well. Who was the other player that came from Syracuse at the same time...Earl something?

What was misleading was Pike calling him the best shooter on the team. I felt like I was in the big minority not really liking Kiss when he transfered but then Pike hyped up his shooting so much I bought into it in the off season

Besides his long-range prowess, Cam has a decent handle, getting into the paint with just enough space to get a good shot off, but for some reason he passed up on those looks against NW.

I think he’s savvy enough to find a way to finish those plays in the lane, much like Paul does. Hope to see that in future games. Love his game.

Other side of that coin is just two more misses, one at Purdue and one at Northwestern and we are 10-7/2-4 and we are back to "Fire Pike" posts. As you wrote the margin is really thin when you are trying to pile up wins in this league.

Agreed
Just to say I was not comparing the twos
shooting ability or worth to the team

just that Kiss was expected to be good also, and was not. Cam is he real deal

Good teams find a way

So many basketball games come down to the final minute

But with your reasoning, we could have won the SHU game and OSU, then what would our record be?
You could drive yourself crazy with what ifs

THIS! IMO, it wasn’t a step up in competition, it was Caleb and Paul not getting a lot of consistent PT with Cam.

I’m a ‘69er. the semi against frazier and southern illinois was broadcast live on large screen video in the barn. cutting edge technology ahead of its time. waited in line all night for tickets. that entire season the chants at the barn were N-I-T, N-I-T, N-I-T! i still have the game programs from our NIT games at the garden.

Shame we only have Spencer for this year... he is great addition and class act.
** I believe that Griffiths (singed for next year) is similar, if not even better type of player that Cam Spencer is... gotta love this tradition of talent we are getting.
